Penguin USB drive is infinitely cute, hilarious

It’s not like we haven’t seen slightly funny / interesting / unorthodox USB flash drives before, but there’s just something about a headless penguin hanging from a USB port that gets us chuckling. Available in 2/4/8/16GB capacities, the simply titled Penguin drive even gives a portion of its proceeds to the World Wildlife Fund, providing you with even more reason to cave to the urge and pick one up. This little fellow’s up on Amazon right now for $12.95 to $42.95.

Cheap Geek: JVC Video Camera, 8GB Flash Drive, DNA Results

JVCEverio.jpg

I have it on good authority that Donald Trump himself scans the Cheap Geek column every day for the day’s best online tech deals. No, not really.

1. Summer is coming, and Amazon has a deal to help you capture the memories. Get a JVC Everio S GZ-MS100 camcorder for the low price of $179.99, which includes free shipping. This video camera has a 35X optical zoom, one-touch YouTube uploading, and records directly to an SD/SDHC memory card.

2. Get more storage to go when you grab this Kingston 8GB DataTraveler from Buy.com. It offers the same compact size that’s made Flash drives popular, but far more memory than usual. You can get it for $18.85, which includes the shipping price.

3. Oh, here’s an unusual one for you. If you’re one of the 50,000 men who donated DNA samples to the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation’s database, today’s your lucky day. Those men can now access their profiles through the foundation’s Web site for the discounted price of $49.95. The site lets you search and connect with genetic relatives. Planning the family reunion is presumably up to you.

Bonus deal: Print out this coupon to get a two-for-one offer on 31° Below ice cream desserts from Baskin-Robbins. The offer is good until June 21, 2009.

Star Wars Mimobot Series 4 Releases Designer Flash Drives

darth_maul.jpgCommemorating the 10th anniversary of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Mimoco is releasing another series of Star Wars-themed flash drives (here’s a prior series). The first of the designer Flash drive characters will be Darth Maul, to be released June 10th.

The new Star Wars Mimbots will be available in 1GB to 8GB capacities. They’ll come preloaded with digital extras, icons, avatars, screensavers, and mimoByte (sound software that plays Star Wars audio clips when the Flash drive is inserted or ejected from the computer).

No pricing information yet, but comparable 1 GB drives go for $19.95.

Transformers USB flash drive is ready to ravage your files, bring carnage to your desktop

Sure, you already have piles of flash drives scattered around your apocalyptic nightmare of an apartment, but this one’s more special than those, right? Because it’s a Transformer– Ravage, AKA Tripredacus Agent. Ravage has outlived the age of cassette and is onto smaller, better things, and he can store up to 2GB of your most valuable data. He’s going to run $42.99 when he’s available in September, and can be pre-ordered now.

Update: It looks like the pre-order is already sold out! Wonder if the fact that we ordered 1,000 of them has anything to do with it?

Slim Data Puts Storage in Your Wallet

SlimDataUSB.jpgWith USB flash drives getting smaller, and their storage sizes getting larger, people are trying to figure out a convenient way to keep one on hand at all times. USB watches are often not that attractive, and keeping a Flash drive with your keys just makes your keychain that much larger.

That’s why this new item from TopTech products makes so much sense. Slim Data USB cards are thin enough to fit in your wallet’s credit card slot, yet offer 4GB of storage. They measure 3.4- x 2.1 x 0.11-inches and come in clear, gray, orange, red, or blue. When you need to use one, you simply fold the top up to reveal the USB 2.0 port, then plug in into your computer. They work with Windows, Macintosh, and Linux computers. And if you’re in marketing, Slim Data card can be custom printed for larger orders.

While the press release promised 1GB and 4GB capacities, I see only the 4GB model on the site. It sells for $27.99.

Mini MPC 2000XL / SP1200 flash drives let you take a little Kanye with you

We’re not usually very enthused by flash drives, though occasionally they’re cute enough to cause a flutter of interest. These, however, are hair-raisingly, insanely awesome. Designed with the modern musician in mind, these two bad boys are convincingly modeled on the AKAI MPC2000XL sampler and the EMU SP1200 drum machine. And by “convincingly modeled” we mean that they look pretty much exact to their original counterparts. They have a 4GB capacity and are going to run you $39.95 each, and you can pre-order them now. We strongly suggest that you look into doing just that. Several more shots after the break.

Cheap Geek: Philips Home Theater, Fujifilm Camera, Flash Drive

PhilipsMCD908.jpg

If your iPhone case looks suspiciously like bubble wrap, you might be a cheap geek.

1. Home theater systems don’t have to be huge–or expensive. Witness the Philips MCD908 micro system. Amazon’s got it for $249.99, which is a nice discount. The price gets you a compact component system, wood speakers, hi-fi tubes for more lifelike sound, gold-plated speaker connectors, and a remote with a leather back and a metal front. It’s a great system for smaller apartments.

2. Amazon’s got the Fujifilm Finepix F100fd for a fantastic price, only $232.17, and it qualifies for free shipping. This compact silver digital camera shoots 12 megapixel photos, includes a 5x wide-angle optical zoom, and dual image stabilization modes. It also offers face detection and automatic red-eye removal.

3. As the head cheap geek, I don’t usually get excited about flash drives, but this OCZ Diesel drive is a true bargain. It’s offers 16GB of storage for $15.99 (after mail-in rebate). Get it from NewEgg.

Ennova announces USB drive with OLED screen / fingerprint scanner

It’s still a little ways from an actual release, but it looks like the folks at Ennova Direct just couldn’t help themselves from announcing that they’ve received a patent for a newfangled biometric USB flash drive that packs a built-in OLED screen. Even better, that OLED screen apparently actually doubles as the fingerprint scanner, which may not add much extra in terms of security, but should be good for at least a few gee whiz moments. The actual patent, however, isn’t for that bit of convergence, but for the sliding mechanism that covers the screen when it’s closed and pops out the USB connector when it’s open. No word on pricing or capacities just yet, but it looks like the first few drives should be available under the ION Technologies brand sometime in the first quarter of 2010.

LaCie DataShare recycles your bits, will never say goodbye or hurt you

As gadget nerds and Type-A early adopters, you no doubt have a few microSD and SD / SDHC cards laying around that Cheeto-farm you call an office. LaCie’s $10 DataShare USB card readers let you recycle those cards into make-shift USB drives. Not bad for a ginger. Watch the uncomfortably arousing video after the break — go ahead it’s safe, LaCie wants you to.

Crapgadget: No wonder the economy sucks edition

While we here at Engadget are doing everything in our power to get this philosophical “economy” back “on track,” it’s items like these that aren’t doing anything to help. No innovation. No stimulating capabilities. No utility at all, really. Just a webcam that scans business cards, an MP3 player shaped like a cow and a flash drive that’s absolutely not certified for circulation by the Democratic National Committee. Though, we must say that they’re all tailor made for Crapgadget, which is (just barely) good enough for us — drop your vote for the lamest below!
