Apple said to be in talks with Samsung to buy $7.8 billion worth of components

It’s not clear if it’s related to that mysterious $3.9 billion “strategic investment” or not, but it looks like Apple could be about to throw some serious cash in Samsung’s direction. According to a report published in the Korea Economic Daily, Apple is expected to purchase some $7.8 billion worth of components from Samsung this year, including displays, applications processors, and NAND flash chips — all intended for use in iPhones and iPads. As the paper notes, Apple would become Samsung’s single biggest customer if the deal goes through, although the two obviously aren’t strangers to massive deals — Apple has already famously run Samsung’s flash memory supplies dry a few times.

Adobe says Flash 10.2 coming to handsets soon, offers roundabout confirmation of Honeycomb for smartphones

Google’s been notoriously tight-lipped about when Honeycomb will come to cellular handsets, but we may have gotten our answer at a recent Adobe event, as the company’s Anup Murarka tells us Flash 10.2 will be coming to both tablets and smartphones “in the next few weeks.” Come again? You see, Adobe Flash 10.2 uses fewer CPU cycles to play back web video, likely providing better battery life in Android devices (and BlackBerry tablets), but Adobe told us it can’t support the function in earlier versions of the Android OS — Google had to specifically add new capabilities in Honeycomb to let Flash 10.2 take full advantage of hardware. In short, if Flash 10.2 requires Android 3.0 and Flash 10.2 is headed to phones soon, the transitive property of equality suggests that Android 3.0 will soon appear on smartphones as well. Our algebra teacher would be so proud.

In related news, both Flash and Adobe AIR seem to be doing quite well in the mobile arena thus far, as Adobe reports that that AIR is presently in over 84 million smartphones and tablets — with over 200 million such devices ready for the cross-platform apps by the end of the year — and Flash has shipped on 20 million devices across 35 different models (twelve percent of all smartphones, says Adobe) with 50 new Flash-ready tablets scheduled to appear in 2011. Flash Player 10.2 sheds beta label, improves efficiency with Stage Video playback

Should you be one of those (sensible) people who don’t use software until all the Greek letters are removed from its name, we’ve got some happy news for you. Adobe’s Flash Player 10.2 has just exited beta testing and is now available for download to Windows, Mac and Linux computers. Its biggest new feature is the Stage Video API, which promises to drastically reduce the processor load of playing back high-res video. It’ll need to be enabled by content-providing sites like YouTube, Vimeo and Brightcove — all of whom are already on the job — but once that’s done, Adobe says 1080p playback will cost you no more than 15 percent of your CPU cycles. Other new additions include a single-monitor full screen option for multi-display rigs, allowing you to max out a Flash video on one panel while keeping the others free, IE9 hardware acceleration support, and some nifty sub-pixel text rendering enhancements to make our web lives marginally nicer to look at. Update: Flash Player 10.2 also marks Adobe’s discontinuation of support for PowerPC-based Macs and Microsoft’s Windows 2000 OS. So if you’re still rocking some finely aged gear, you’ll have to just content yourself with the awesomeness of 10.1.

BBC iPlayer app coming to Android as well as iPad by the end of this week

The British Broadcasting Corporation has made its iPlayer app plans that extra bit more official by announcing that iPad- and Android-specific versions of its software will be arriving by the end of this week. The iPlayer is a free TV catchup service hosting the best and most popular (those two being almost mutually exclusive categories) from the BBC’s catalog of recent programming, and the new native apps promise to bring that to your portable device in a touchscreen-optimized format with a “simple and intuitive design.” The finishing touches are being applied right now and the apps should be with us before the week is through, but the real cause for excitement is that the BBC plans to take the iPlayer out for an international walk, which will likely rely on such platform-specific apps for distribution and the collection of subscription fees. Then we can all watch Question Time together, yay!

P.S. – Take note, Android users, that you’ll need to have Froyo and Flash Player 10.1 installed on your phone or tablet in order to partake in the new app. Sort of a one step forward, one step back maneuver.

CE-Oh no he didn’t!: Netgear boss calls ‘game over’ for Microsoft, Jobs’ ‘ego’ reason iPhone doesn’t support Flash

Can’t say that Patrick Lo is a name that immediately rang any bells around here. He’s certainly not as recognizable as Netgear, the company that he chairs and rules supreme. But boy did he hit our radar screens this morning. Lo had plenty of criticism to spread around the Microsoft and Apple camps today during a press lunch in Sydney. Oh where to even begin? Let’s start with Microsoft, and Lo’s claim that, “Microsoft is over — game over, from my point of view,” when comparing Windows Phone 7’s chance to compete with Android and the iPhone. Doubtful, not with Redmond’s Windows 7 and MS Office cash cows fueling Microsoft’s intense desire to execute on its new mobile strategy.

Lo then turned his sights on Apple, having this to say on the topic of Steve Jobs’ refusal to support Adobe Flash on Apple’s mobile devices: “What’s the reason for him to trash Flash? There’s no reason other than ego.” Funny, we thought it was due to performance, security, and power consumption issues. Lo later added, “Once Steve Jobs goes away, which is probably not far away, then Apple will have to make a strategic decision on whether to open up the platform.” Classy. LG G-Slate makes guest appearance on MysteryGuitarMan’s YouTube channel (video)

LG’s promotional strategy for the G-Slate seems to be to keep officially mum about the device, while letting random pseudo-celebrities tease it out in brief glimpses. A week ago, K-Pop artist Seungri gave us our first sighting of the dual-camera array on the back of the G-Slate, which has today made its triumphant return to YouTube, courtesy of one MysteryGuitarMan. The rear of the device here doesn’t look identical to the one in Seungri’s video, however the metallic strip separating the cams and its “with Google” branding look nearly identical to what LG has on the back of its Optimus 2X Android smartphone. We’re also seeing a single LED flash for the first time, there are a couple of unidentified connectors at the bottom, at least one of them likely to assist docking in landscape mode, and we do get to see the tablet in profile for an idea of how thin it is. HP / Palm’s 9.7-inch Topaz tablet to use 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM8660, Adreno 220 GPU

Looks like those whispers we heard about HP’s Topaz having a 1.2GHz Qualcomm CPU were true. The folks over at Pre Central just scored an internal document detailing presumed specifications of HP’s forthcoming 9.7-inch tablet, and it looks like the aforesaid CPU will be joined by an integrated Adreno 220 GPU, 512MB of DDR2 memory, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, a front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera and dual-band 802.11b/g/n WiFi. We’re told to expect an oleophobic Gorilla Glass screen with a standard XGA (1024 x 768) resolution, options for 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of storage, optional WWAN, an accelerometer, gyroscope, light sensor, microphone and a battery that’ll last for around eight hours in ideal circumstances. Naturally, webOS will be onboard, and we’re hearing that a WiFi-only model will indeed hit the market at some point. As for the connected versions? HSPA, LTE and CDMA variants are rumored, with the former two likely to be SIM-locked while all three carry A-GPS.

It should be noted that these documents were apparently fresh as of last fall, so everything is clearly subject to change. That said, we’re digging the reports that HP will be doing everything it can to fully support Flash on this here slate, and it may also consider a partnership with Blio for the digital bookworms in attendance. Naturally, cloud services is shaping up to be a huge deal, and it’ll definitely support inductive charging via the Touchstone v2. These docs also affirm what we’d heard about integrated Beats Audio technology and Tap to Share, with the second-gen Touchstone to also handle wireless picture sharing, cordless audio streaming and tether-free video beaming (just to name a few). Google Removes Flash App From Android Market

Apple exerts famously tight-fisted control over what apps make it into its iTunes App Store. Now, one Android app developer has learned, Google can play that game, too.

Kongregate, a popular website featuring Adobe Flash-based games, had an app in the official Android Market for less than 24 hours before Google pulled it down.

Google removed the Kongregate Arcade app on Wednesday afternoon, citing a violation of the Android Market Developer Distribution Agreement.

Although Google didn’t elaborate, it’s likely that Kongregate violates section 4.5 of the Developer Distribution Agreement. That’s a non-compete clause which states developers “may not use the Market to distribute or make available any Product whose primary purpose is to facilitate the distribution of Products outside of the Market.”

The Kongregate app hosts Flash games created by thousands of outside developers. In other words, the app is in effect routing around the Android Market’s approval process, setting up its own distribution system for Flash-based software.

“It does seem like a pretty extreme distortion to call something that plays content in a browser to be the same thing as an application store,” Kongregate CEO Jim Greer said in a statement given to multiple news outlets.  “By this definition, we don’t see why apps like the Kindle or other music apps aren’t across the line.”

Google’s policy is reminiscent of Apple’s infamous no-Flash policy on iOS devices. Apple has stated publicly that it disallows Flash due to the platform’s proprietary nature, security issues and performance-related problems. But there’s another, unstated reason why Apple doesn’t want Flash: It’s too dangerous for a company that wants to maintain control of its products and software to let a platform like Flash become accessible to the iOS. If Flash developers were to do what Kongregate did with the Android Marketplace — code games in Flash and load them to a web page, which the Marketplace app redirects users to — Apple would lose control of the iOS platform. That could introduce security risks but would also cut into Apple’s revenue, as it would provide developers with a way to distribute software while avoiding paying the percentage that Apple takes on app sales.

Google, however, is being more straightforward with their approach. Rather than unleashing a torrent of words on us like Steve Jobs did with his no-Flash explanation, the DDA clause boils down to two hyphenated words: “Non-compete.” Don’t release apps that have the potential to take customers outside of the Android Marketplace economy.

Pointing at others who may or may not be breaking the rules, however, probably won’t help Kongregate much in this case. But the company hasn’t completely given up hope for reconciling their differences with Google.

“While Google has pulled [the app] down temporarily,” Greer told Wired.com in an email statement, “we will work with them to make the app available in their Market.”

It’s not as if Kongregate is completely exiled from all Android OS-running handsets, either. It took me only a few minutes to sideload the Kongregate Arcade app onto my smartphone by accessing Kongregate’s web site directly through my phone’s browser, although to do so I had to deactivate the safety option prohibiting users from downloading apps from unofficial Android app stores. And there’s always the option of putting the app up on alternative, unofficial Android app markets.

But being banned from the most popular market for Android apps is obviously undesirable for Kongregate. At least the company has a pretty good idea of why Google is objecting to its app.

We’ve heard of apps getting 187’d from the iTunes App Store ad nauseum, but Google’s Android Marketplace? That’s pretty novel. In what is probably the most high profile bait-and-switch since the mobile platform’s launch, Kongregate found its eponymous software pulled on the very same day it came out. As CEO Jim Greer tells Joystiq, the app was pulled due to the “claim you can’t use their app store to distribute another app store.” Which is all well and good until you realize that what Kongregate the app does is simply serve as a portal for Kongregrate the mobile site — Greer says it’s the same experience as visiting m.kongregate.com to play its free Flash games — with the option for offline mode. “It’s all essentially cached content delivered in a browser,” he said, “which to me is just bizarre that that would be considered an ‘app store,'” he said.

The Android Market Developer Distribution Agreement says, “you may not use the Market to distribute or make available any Product whose primary purpose is to facilitate the distribution of Products outside of the Market,” with Product defined broadly as “Software, content and digital materials created for Devices in accordance with the Android SDK and distributed via the Market.” When we talked to Google, the company pointed out the same clause and said, “Applications in violation of our policies (like Kongregate) are removed from Android Market.”

Greer adds that a number of people in Google had seen it previously and liked the app (not the ones who ultimately pulled it), and he hopes this is all some grand misunderstanding. We’ll see, but in the meantime, the app is still available for side loading care of Kongregate’s website. Nothing like a backup plan, eh?
