Internet Explorer 9 RC now available to download, tracking protection in tow (update)

The Internet Explorer 9 beta pleasantly surprised us with Microsoft’s renewed competitiveness in the web browser wars, and the pinnable, hardware-accelerated experience is getting even better today — you can download the IE9 release candidate right now, which streamlines and beautifies the tabbed browsing layout considerably, adds those previously promised, fully customizable tracking protection lists for privacy and freely toggled ActiveX filters, as well as an updated Javascript engine, geolocation support via HTML5, the ability to pin web apps to the taskbar, and a host of assorted speed and functionality improvements. Find the files you need at our source link below, and let us know if the Beauty of the Web captivates you this time around.

Update: We spoke to Microsoft IE9 privacy guru Andy Ziegler, and learned to our dismay that tracking protection lists won’t actually be included in the browser per se; rather, the company’s created a feature where you can generate your own lists or download ready-made one from providers like TRUSTe. The thing is, IE9 won’t suggest one for you, or even curate a group of them when you install — you’ll need to put on your power user hat and do the legwork there yourself.

Last.fm radio app goes ‘premium’ on home and mobile devices, web and desktop streaming remain free

Last.fm has decided to tweak its offering on the app front, where it is now introducing a new subscription requirement for most mobile and home entertainment devices. From here on out, you’ll have to pay for the privilege of streaming music through the company’s software on devices like the iPhone and Squeezebox, though the blow is nicely cushioned by the news that there won’t be any ads to dilute your aural pleasure. Windows Phone 7 won’t be subject to the new fee for the remainder of 2011 in the US and UK, while Sonos devices will continue to stream freely until this summer, but eventually it seems like all these apps will cost a little bit of cash to use. And “little” is the operative word here, as Last.fm is asking for only $3 / €3 / £3 per month. If you really can’t stomach the outlay, however, just stream via the web or desktop application… you tightwad.

T-Mobile offering all phones for free on contract this weekend

T-Mobile has a reputation for offering some of the more steeply-discounted promotions among the big four US carriers, but this one takes the cake: as long as you’re willing to sign on for a new contract, you can get any phone they offer for free this weekend. Billed as a Valentine’s Day deal, shoppers on Friday and Saturday will be eligible to get literally any handset in the store — including the myTouch 4G, HD7, G2, and Vibrant — gratis, albeit with their names inked on a new two-year deal. You still might be contending with a mail-in rebate to bring the net cost down to free, but it still ain’t bad — and if you already have a line of service, you can get in on the offer by agreeing to a full upgrade. Follow the break for the press release.

More FREE O&O Products: Defrag Professional 11, Unerase 2, DriveLED, and More

This article was written on March 02, 2010 by CyberNet.

o&o defrag.pngAbout two months ago we wrote about how you could grab O&O Defrag Professional 10 for free, but now you can get one step closer to the latest version without dropping a dime. Not only that, but on top of their defragmenting application they have also included versions of Unerase, CleverCache, SafeErase, and DriveLED for the picking.

There’s no telling how long these would be available, and I’d therefore recommend signing up for your free license now. Not only that, but if you ever decide to upgrade to the latest version of the apps you can actually use these to get discounts. Or, we learned with the last O&O “giveaway” that those who are patient will be rewarded. Some users reported getting email offers from O&O to upgrade to the latest Defrag Professional 12 at upwards of 70% off. Not to shabby.

Note: Interestingly the version of DriveLED being given away is the latest.

  • O&O Defrag Professional 11 [Free License] [Download]
Unleash the hidden performance of your computer with the minimum effort. O&O Defrag 11 Professional Edition packs file fragments quickly and securely back together to optimize your hard disk under Windows. Its functionality ranges from a fully automated defragmentation to an individual professional set up. It can do everything a truly good defragmentation software should be able to do. The new background monitoring function helps to prevent fragmentation at source. Newly added and modified files are analyzed and defragmented whenever they are not being accessed. O&O Defrag makes sure that your hard disk is constantly performing at its peak.
  • O&O Unerase 2 [Free License] [Download]
O&O UnErase V2 makes the restoration of deleted data as easy as “a walk in the park”. With the help of a new and one-of-a-kind algorithm, more files can be restored than ever before. Within a matter of seconds, O&O UnErase finds your deleted files and restores them with just the click of a button. The original filename and directory structure are also restored as if nothing had been deleted in the first place.
  • O&O CleverCache 6 Pro [Free License] [Download]
O&O CleverCache 6 Professional is a unique tool that optimizes the File Cache Management for Windows Vista, NT, 2000 and Windows XP. This results in an enormous increase in performance boosting a system’s performance at times to up to twice its original speed. All this is achieved without the need for additional hardware or any reduction in your system’s stability. You simply install O&O CleverCache 6 and you’re ready to go – no need to reboot. It automatically recognizes your configuration, and within 5 minutes you can unlock the hidden resources on your Windows system! The more the file cache grows, the less memory is available for running applications. The result is a significant decrease in performance as requests for memory lead to the so-called “swapping” of memory. This occurs when unused memory segments are paged out to the hard disk’s paging file. Because hard disk access is slow relative to Memory, loss of performance is inevitable. O&O CleverCache 6.0 Professional Edition is optimized to meet the day-to-day needs of individual users. The software is optimized to run on Windows NT4 Workstation, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Home Edition, Windows Vista and Windows XP Professional.
  • O&O SafeErase 2 [Free License] [Download]
O&O SafeErase V2.0 is THE solution for the secure deletion of sensitive data from your hard disk and offers you the ultimate protection of your private sphere. With just one click of the mouse you can securely and permanently delete files, folders and partitions. The motives for the deletion of files are many. Old e-mail files, internet history, file cache, financial records, company information, and private files ought to be protected from other’s access. The reality, however, is much to the contrary. O&O SafeErase puts a stop to this by not only deleting files, but by annihilating them with the help of recognized and recommended methods. In Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows 2000, and Windows NT, O&O SafeErase will protect your computer from the unpermissive access of others to your alleged deleted files.
  • O&O DriveLED 3 [Free License] [Download]
The number of mobile computers in use in companies has grown dramatically over the last couple years. Just as dramatic is increase in difficulty of servicing these mobile system that are usually being operated in remote locations. The Achilles heel for any notebook is the hard disk, usually overstressed by the sheer frequency of use in a variety of different environments. With this stress on the hard disk comes the risk of hardware failure, which, until O&O DriveLED 3, was an unpredictable gamble. Monitoring all of the internal hard disks of your system, O&O DriveLED 3 examines its “health”, providing you with information from your hard disk’s read/write access to its current temperature. Should signs of problems appear, O&O DriveLED 3 alerts the user, reducing the chances of a hard disk crash or the loss of precious data.

Nokia shuts down Ovi Music Unlimited service in most markets, cites lack of traction

Whether you knew it as Comes With Music or Ovi Music Unlimited, the sad fact is that pretty soon you won’t know it all — Nokia’s subscription music service is being shut down almost universally, with the exception of a few select markets like China, Brazil and South Africa. Reuters reports that the use of DRM to lock down content to less-than-cutting-edge devices was a major stumbling block in the rollout of what was originally supposed to be a major iTunes competitor. Those who are already signed up will continue to have access to their music libraries indefinitely, but won’t be able to access new tracks once their current subscription expires. From then on, you’ll only have the DRM-free Ovi Music store to keep you warm during those long Finnish nights.

Wikipedia celebrates 10th anniversary, co-founder Jimmy Wales opines on app stores

Did you know that Wikipedia is celebrating its 10th anniversary this week? It is, on January 15th! It’s hard to believe that the ‘edited by the everyman’ encyclopedia has been around that long… or maybe we’re just getting old. Either way, co-founder of the site (and man of many personal appeals) Jimmy Wales took the opportunity to answer some questions about the past, present and future of Wikipedia, and, when asked about the growing prevalence of mobile apps and app stores, well, Wales had plenty to say, including that models such as the iTunes app store can represent a dangerous “chokepoint” and that they could be “a threat to a diverse and open ecosystem.” He also added that mobile devices are owned by people, and those people should control their own devices. We can see where Jimmy’s coming from in some ways — apps are a wholly new, untested way of ingesting content, but we have a hard time swallowing wholesale that the app store model could threaten internet freedom more than an issue such as net neutrality. But you know, if you ask us nicely, Jimmy, we might just take your word for it. Hit up the ‘more coverage’ link to check out a video of Jimmy Wales waxing philosophical about the birthday celebration.

NavFree launches free US iPhone navigation app with offline map data

There’s no shortage of iPhone navigation apps out there, but we can’t say we’ve seen too many that come with 1.6GB of offline map data — especially for free. That’s the hook for NavFree USA, which just went live in the App Store — sure, it also has some interesting social features like crowdsourced map updates and navigating to friends, and you can buy add-ons like traffic and speed camera info, but we think most people will use the free turn-by-turn and call it a day. That is, until Apple builds navigation directly into the OS. PR after the break.

Update: Commenter marklarson just pointed out the hilariously misguided compass icon in the upper left there, and now we are downloading this app just to look at it whenever we need to be cheered up.

Best Buy offering free mobile hotspots with iPad purchase

Planning to pay Verizon an extra $130 for an iPad + MiFi 2200 bundle? Hold on a sec, because Best Buy’s planning to give away hotspots free of charge when you purchase Apple’s tablet. This advertisement, obtained by 9to5 Mac, does mention that you’ll need to shackle yourself to a carrier for two years to qualify — unlike Verizon’s original arrangement — but in exchange you get a free Verizon FiveSpot, AT&T MiFi, or perhaps most excitingly, a WiMax-capable Sprint Overdrive. Fine print in the lower-right hand corner suggests that the promo will begin immediately and run through January 2nd. What better way to spend your leftover Hanukkah gelt than on gigabytes of wireless data?

Telus to bundle free Xbox 360 with every WP7 activation or renewal for a limited time, says leak

Buy this phone, won’t you please buy this phone? We’ve no idea why Telus has to try so hard to convince Canadian buyers to grab themselves a Windows Phone 7 handset, but the carrier’s expected to sweeten the deal dramatically over the next few days by bundling a freebie Xbox 360 with every WP7 device activation or renewal. The offer starts today, according to this leaked memo, and will last through to the end of the week, December 19th. Telus carries the HTC 7 Surround and LG Optimus 7, neither of which would seem to have caught fire quite the way Microsoft would have wanted. Ah well, if you’re going to sell your wireless soul for a whole three years, you might as well do it for a phone-plus-console combo.

[Thanks, Sean]

Kin Studio closing January 31st, Verizon offers free phones to affected customers

Though the final nail in the Microsoft Kin coffin has yet to be tapped into place, the software that made the pair of ill-fated handsets strangely compelling will soon get the axe. Come January 31st, Kin Studio will be no more, effectively neutering existing Kin phones by removing them from the cloud. They’ll still be able to make calls, send SMS, email, browse the web and even stream music via Zune Pass, but their formerly live homescreens will become lifeless, stripped of social networking functionality — and will actually remain stuck on their very last status update, much like a broken clock. Their online repository of pictures, videos and contacts will cease to exist, though you can back them up to a personal computer if you act now. Thankfully, Verizon seems to understands that not all Kin customers will be happy with a zombiephone, and has taken a drastic measure to help them out — through March 31st, 2011, Kin owners can trade it in for a free 3G phone of their choice. How kind. Find full Verizon FAQs on the transition at our more coverage links.
