Apple’s iPod Celebrating its 6th Birthday

This article was written on October 23, 2007 by CyberNet.

Six years ago today on October 23, 2001, the very first iPod was brought to life. At the time of the announcement, Steve Jobs (who looks nearly the same today as he did back then, minus a few hairs on the top of his head) talked up music and how there was a large target market around the World for it.  He said, “Music knows no boundaries,” and at the time, there was no market leader for a digital music device. Jobs said that while there were some companies that offered devices, no one had found the perfect recipe but he was confident that Apple had concocted it. It turns out they did!

Lets take a look back at the very first iPod (pictured above) and some of its features:

  • 5GB hard drive (compared to the recently launched iPod classic with a 160GB hard drive and can hold 40,000 songs or 200 hours of video)
  • Capable of holding 1000 songs in 160-Kbps MP3 format
  • Firewire port only – no USB
  • Original iPod compatible only with MacOS 9.2.1 and MacOS X 10.1 (or later)
  • Featured mechanical scroll wheel (touch-sensitive came in 2002)

In case you’d like to relive the moment when Steve Jobs introduced the iPod to the “i” family, view the YouTube video below:

After the original launch in late 2001, Apple launched a 10GB and 20GB version in 2002 which was finally compatible with Windows using Musicmatch.  iTunes for Windows hadn’t yet been released. It also featured the very first touch-sensitive wheel and was priced at $399 for 10GB and $499 for 20GB. What a difference those prices and models are compared to what’s available today!

Apple truly changed the world of digital music devices and has done a great job of dominating the market. It’s certainly been a great 6 years for the iPod, and here’s to many more!

9 Tools to Help You Stay Green on Earth Day [Toolkit]

Earth Day is this Friday. And it’s always good to take a moment to think about ways to screw up this planet a little less. Realistically, we’re not going to give up our gadgets (which aren’t always environmentally friendly), but we can at least come up with ways to make them less destructive, ya know?: More »

Rumor: 800 Apple Employees Out of iJob

This article was written on October 22, 2007 by CyberNet.

apple fires employees Apparently Steve Jobs doesn’t like greedy people who try to take advantage of him, and I don’t blame him one bit. ArsTechina is reporting (although it hasn’t been confirmed) that two separate independent sources have informed them that Apple has fired over 800 employees who decided to take Jobs up on his offer to refund $100 to early adopters who purchased iPhones before the price drop. Yep, those 800 employees are the same lucky ducks who got a phone for free. Do the math and you’ll realize that those 800 employees cost Apple an extra $80,000! No wonder Steve Jobs decided to go on a major firing spree.

It’s hard to believe that 800 people were that greedy, but I’m sure it was viral. Once one person attempted to get the refund and realized Apple didn’t stop them, you can bet they went off to tell their other co-workers to give it a try. You’d also think that these employees would feel some type of loyalty to Apple that would keep them from stealing, especially after getting a rather expensive phone from them. They manipulated the situation, and now they’re going to have to suffer the consequences.

If this turns out to be true, it just goes to show that stealing is stealing.  Sure, it will cost Apple quite a bit of money to hire and train 800 new employees, especially right before the holiday season, but it had to be done. Apple could have just given them a warning and moved on, but most companies have a zero tolerance policy and whether it’s a dollar, or $100 dollars, it’s stealing. Now the one question that I have regarding this whole situation is why didn’t Apple have a better system in place to help them determine if the person seeking the refund worked for Apple and had generously received an iPhone for free?

Want a job at an Apple store? Now’s probably the best time to pursue it!

The SupaBoy Puts the SNES in the Palm of Your Hand

SupaBoy Handheld SNES

If you fondly remember the Super Nintendo and all of the great, cartridge-based games that it had, the SupaBoy might be the handheld gaming system for you – especially if you still have tons of old SNES games lying around your house or in a box in your basement.  The SupaBoy will be manufactured by Hyperkin, a company known for third-party retro gaming gear, and will be compatible with real SNES cartridges.
The SupaBoy will feature a 3.5-inch color LCD in the center, a rechargeable battery that runs for about 5 hours, and AV out so you can connect it to a real big-screen television if you’re tired of playing your old SNES titles on a small set. You can even connect two SNES controllers to the ports on the front for multiplayer action.
Hyperkin tweeted about the product a few weeks ago, and followed up by announcing its plans to release the device in the United States this summer. Pricing hasn’t been announced, but old school gamers are likely to pick this one up.

iPod Shuffle Hack In Sony Headphones

A recent iPod enthusiast took his iPod shuffle and made it more useful. Now, he won’t have to worry about plugging those pesky headphones in and wondering where to place his Shuffle, because he has the Shuffle built right in. I am sure this could be a popular item if there was a way that it could be manufactured with out breaking any copyright laws.

This Sponsored Gadget is the Beginning of the…Look, Free Stuff! [Opinion]

Amazon’s new Kindle is really their old one made cheaper by the inclusion of ads. It at first caused me utter outrage. I felt as angry as if if someone took my favorite book (The Silent World by Jacques Cousteau, in case you’re wondering) took some paste, and covered up the dolphins and the last few paragraphs of every chapter with advertisements for Chuck E. Cheese. I felt like shouting, “THESE. ARE. MY. WORDS…MAN.” More »

Nintendo Tryvertises 3DS Games

We have spotted a lot more of the Nintendo 3DS Station’s around Tokyo lately. An in-store sampling terminal with a screen showing ads and information about Nintendo products, consumers who have their own DS can also use the console’s built-in wifi connectivity to receive sample demo games or updated game content for free.

The demo can be directly sent to your console and downloaded through the interface menu. It is stored inside your console but since it is not on a cartridge can only be played until you turn off the DS.

There was also a further service called “Touch! Try! DS!”, offering over 150 samples that you could play on your console using the unit’s wifi without downloading (i.e. by staying within the appropriate distance of the connection).

It is also possible to purchase new games for the DS using the Station terminal. After buying a prepaid Nintendo Points Card (or buying one through the online store using a credit card or through your mobile phone) you can input the card number, and then have the game data transmitted to your console.

iPhone Launch Day News Round-Up

This article was written on June 29, 2007 by CyberNet.

It’s going to be a slow news day today, folks. Everybody is caught up with the iPhone, and as as result, well, the only news out there is about the iPhone. Here’s CyberNet’s very last iPhone news round-up.

All for one, one for all:

StevejobsimageSteve Jobs put on his Santa hat yesterday during a Town-Hall meeting with Apple employees to tell them that every single full-time U.S. employee and any part-time employee that has been with Apple for a year would be receiving a brand new 8GB iPhone!

I liked Engadget’s title, “Jobs pulls an Oprah.” In their article, they point out that Apple has over 17,000 employees, so that’s a total of over $12,091,414 (retail price) that Jobs just forked out for his employees. I bet those temp employees who haven’t been there are year are feeling a little left out today.

Thanks for the tip Oliver!

EDGE speeds improving?

On Wednesday when the first big reviews came out, the one thing that was said was that the Edge Internet on the iPhone is “excruciatingly slow.” Current AT&T customers who have been using the EDGE Internet have been reporting “dramatic increases in throughput” over the last day.

Engadget got an EDGE handset to run their own tests and while they said it was inconsistent, they did manage to get some speed tests that ran over 200kpbs. For the sake of all the soon-to-be iPhone owners, hopefully those speeds keep up!

Google Reader on iPhone, cool!

A developer decided he wanted to come up with a solution for those who wanted to use Google reader on their iPhone. Just follow these steps if you’d like Google Reader on your phone:

  1. Visit his site and drag the bookmarklet into Safari 3
  2. Visit Google Reader and click on the bookmarklet
  3. The look now changes using Javascript so that you have an iPhone-sized interface.

That’s all for today! Come 6 PM, the iPhone will finally have a chance to prove whether it was worth all the hype, and the money. If it’s successful, it could really change the cellphone industry as we know it today. Happy iDay (as the day has been labeled by Apple fans)!
