Computer Power User Magazine Falls For April Fools Joke

It looks like the Computer Power User Magazine has fallen for an April Fools joke that Thinkgeek.com published. The picture above shows the article from the magazine about a Wireless Extension Cord (WEC). The WEC was claimed to cost only $34.99 and can transmit power up to 300 feet away. It would really be a great invention if it existed :) .

CyberNotes: World’s Most Expensive Private Jets

This article was written on November 27, 2006 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Million Dollar Monday

The chances of coming across celebrities and the world famous while traveling by air  are getting slimmer as more of these people opt for their own luxury private jet.  Last week we talked about luxury yachts, which are probably owned by the same crowd that own the world’s most expensive jets! Prices can run well into the tens of millions with amenities most of us could only dream of, like gold-plated bathroom fixtures, hand-woven carpet, original artwork, etc.

One particular jet has crocodile leather trim all throughout including the toilet seat! Yes, the toilet seat! As of June, there were over 219,000 non-commercial airline, non-military planes in the US. Just like the yachts we wrote about last week, it appears that the bigger the jet is, the better. So, here’s what we’ve dug up about the world’s most expensive private jets!

Boeing is pretty well known for their commercial aircraft like the 747.  They also have a line of business jets that are designed and configured to be luxurious.  Some of them include a master bedroom, showers, fancy bathrooms, conference rooms, and dining areas. These particular jets cost anywhere from 42-47 million! Capacity is anywhere from 24-63 people plus 3 crew members. One particular jet (pictures to the right) has 807 square feet available for “working space.” Any business leader would have anything and everything imaginable to keep business running from the air.

Another well known maker of luxury jets is Bombardier with their BD-700 Global Express jet. This particular jet is considered to be “high speed” and is owned by people such as Celine Dion, Bill Gates, Mark Shuttleworth (Ubuntu), and Steven Spielberg. This is a smaller jet in comparison to the Boeing version and can hold anywhere from 8-19 passengers with 2-4 crew members. It has similar features from the Boeing like the separate conference area, living cabin, galley, crew rest area, etc. The price begins at around 45 million!

If I ever make 45 million in my lifetime, I’ll be a happy camper! This type of transportation is certainly for the privileged traveler. There’s nothing like running your business from the air, which these jets are completely capable of doing.  When price is no object, a luxury jet is what your money can buy!

Wi-Fi iPod Finally in Apple’s Future?

This article was written on April 13, 2007 by CyberNet.

Wifi_ipodAccording to Apple’s primary manufacturer, Apple has plans to release a Wi-Fi iPod sometime in the second half of this year. While Apple hasn’t made an official announcement regarding this, I’d like to think that their manufacturer does have some clue what they’re talking about, and that it’s reliable.

One company (Universal Scientific Industrial) will supply the Wi-Fi chipsets, and Foxconn will build the finished units.  A Wi-Fi iPod has been rumored ever since what seems like the beginning of the iPod. It makes sense on so many levels, and it really does surprise me that Apple hasn’t gone this route already.

Why a Wi-Fi iPod makes complete sense:

  • The demand is there– people want this feature!
  • Competitors have already added wireless.
  • Wi-Fi music downloads (if offered) would be quick and useful.
  • Convenience.

Microsoft has been criticized for the way in which they implemented the wireless, and many have said it’s near worthless. Sure you can search for other Zunes near you, or send songs for the 3×3 trial, but they didn’t go the extra mile. Here’s Apple’s chance to make the most of the wireless capabilities, and learn from the mistakes that Microsoft has made with the Zune’s Wireless to give consumers what they want.

MacNN.com also speculates on whether this new iPod would switch to a touchscreen control mechanism which could certainly be a possibility.

This time, I actually think a Wi-Fi iPod might finally be coming…

Why I Jailbroke My iPhone 3G

This article was written on December 19, 2008 by CyberNet.

200812190656.jpgI’ve been an iPhone owner for about a year now, and I have jailbroken it off and on throughout the time that I’ve owned it. When I first got the device I jailbroke it to play with some of the apps people were developing, but I really didn’t see any that were must-haves, and they especially didn’t touch the quality of what’s available in the official App Store today. So my iPhone never stayed jailbroken for long.

It’s a different story for me now. I jailbroke my iPhone 3G for the first time about a month and a half ago, and couldn’t imagine having it any other way. Why is that? Here are my reasons:

  1. Run apps in the background – There is a free program available through the repositories that will allow you to run any iPhone app in the background. I like to listen to streaming Internet radio stations while doing other things on my phone, and this is really the only solution for doing that.
  2. Try out paid App Store apps before you buy them – This is reason enough to jailbreak your iPhone. Basically how this works is you can install any app from the App Store (yes, including paid ones) without dropping a dime. You’ll want to become familiar with sites such as Appulo.us, which are where you can download the “cracked” apps from. You’ll also need to install an app from the repositories that will basically tell iTunes it’s okay to sync the stuff you haven’t actually purchased.
  3. Easy tethering solution – Another program in the repositories, called PDANet, is the ultimate tethering program. It’s free if all you want it for is HTTP access, but if you cough up the $30 you can also use things like VPN access. There is little to no configuration to get it running… just connect to your device like you would a router, and you’ll be on your merry way.
  4. Backup app configurationsChronus can also be found in the repositories, and is an extremely valuable tool when it comes down to backing up the configuration/settings of your apps. You can then email yourself the backups you made so that they are safely tucked away off the device in case anything should happen to your iPhone. If you pay the $7.99 for Chronus you’ll even be able to backup all of your programs in a single click.

Those are the reasons that I have so far for jailbreaking my iPhone. I know what you’re thinking about number 2… how could I “steal” apps from the developers without actually paying for them? I’ve actually bought more apps now than before I jailbroke my phone. Why is that? I’m able to see what programs I find useful and fun instead of relying solely on the reviews in the App Store. I’ve pretty much committed to myself that if I keep an app for more than a week that I’ll go ahead and buy it. It’s inevitable that some people may use this method as a way to get programs illegally, but I use it more as a way to “try before I buy.” Not only that but iTunes won’t automatically update these cracked apps for you, and if you like to stay on top of updates you’ll probably want to purchase them.

What about you? Do you have an iPhone or iPod Touch that you’ve decided for or against jailbreaking?

Which Of These New Keyboards Are Your Favorites?

Fosfor Gadgets has put together a list of 10 keyboards that you will not find in every home. I found the keyboard above (prevents cramping in your hands) to be the most unique out of the list but I would say all of them are quite a site to see. DataHand is the manufacturer of that ergonomic keyboard and if you purchase the personal edition of the keyboard you will also receive a lap loader which allows the keyboard to be comfortably placed in your lap while you type. Despite what you may be thinking, there is actually a QWERTY layout to the keys (or so the site says :) ). Hmmm, interesting!

Google Spaces shows us where Wave went

Google Spaces

So it’s safe to say that Google Wave didn’t really make one upon the tech world as a whole, but it certainly was a neat idea. While Wave itself now lives with the Apache Software Foundation, the core concept, easy and direct collaboration with anyone, has new life with Google Shared Spaces. The Wave gadgets have been given a standalone home here, the idea being that you create a Space, invite some people, and then do — well, whatever it is you need to do. It’s basically just a more task-focused version of Wave, and maybe that’s all the service really needed. Direction. Right now there are just shy of 50 such gadgets for you to try, but anyone with a little JavaScript know-how can whip up their own in a jiffy, though sadly there’s no interactive gadget-creation Space. Now that would be something.

[Thanks, Hassan]

Vista Update Fixes iPod/iTunes Issue

This article was written on May 09, 2007 by CyberNet.

Ever since March when Apple launched iTunes 7.1, it wasn’t smooth sailing for Vista users because ejecting an iPod from the Windows notification area using the “safely remove hardware” feature could have corrupted your iPod.

Fortunately, an iPod update that fixes this issue is now available at the Microsoft Download Center.  According to the Windows Vista Blog, the update will be automatically available on May 22 via automatic updates, however it’s available now for download.

Microsoft and Apple teamed up to get this issue resolved (yes you read that right, they worked together), and they’re both recommending that anybody using Windows Vista with iTunes and the iPod download this update.

There could be problems if you use one of the following methods to disconnect your iPod:

  • You use the Safely Remove Hardware feature in the notification area to disconnect the iPod. Then, you disconnect the USB cable.
  • You use the Eject command in Windows Explorer to disconnect the iPod. Then, you disconnect the USB cable.

I’m sure no one wants to deal with a corrupt iPod, so put this update at the top of your priority list.

2007 CyberNet Awards: Best Customer Service

This article was written on December 17, 2007 by CyberNet.

It’s time to hand out the first of many 2007 CyberNet Awards! The category is Best Customer Service, and we have three different winners in this category. These are all companies that we’ve had to deal with on items that we’ve purchased, but ended up having troubles somewhere down the road.

–3rd Place: ESET

I recently purchased a two-year subscription to the new ESET Security Suite, and I have to say that it is truly an incredible product. After using it for a few days I noticed that there was an issue with the firewall when trying to utilize the shared clipboard in Windows Remote Desktop. They promptly responded (within 24-hours), and after several emails they were able to pinpoint the issue.

They’ve told me that it will be fixed when they release the next update, which could be days or weeks from now. The issue isn’t that big of a deal, but the fact that they took notice and addressed the issue so quickly shows real value in their customer service department. My experience with them isn’t over yet, as I still have to wait and see how long it takes for the update to be released, but so far their responsiveness is outstanding.

–2nd Place: Newegg

Newegg is a geek’s haven when it comes to finding gadgets and gizmos…if it’s electronic, they probably carry it. But even more importantly if you have any problems they will definitely cover your back. I’ve only had one instance where I’ve had to take advantage of Newegg’s customer service, and dealing with their friendly staff was a pleasure. They had the item replaced in no time at all, and it’s no wonder why they have a rating of 9.72 out of 10 from 17,000+ reviews. From that score they’ve received a 9.72 for their customer service, and a 9.56 for returns/replacements. There needs to be more standup companies like Newegg in the world!

–1st Place: Logitech

I’ve had my Logitech MX Revolution mouse for over a year now, but back over the summer I had a little dilemma. Just 7-months after purchasing the mouse I couldn’t get it to power on for the life of me. Out of nowhere it died, and I was left using an old straggly wired mouse that wasn’t nearly as nice.

I called up Logitech since it was still under warranty, and like any other company I was put on hold. Luckily it wasn’t more than 5 minutes later that I was talking to a representative. I only had to explain once what happened, and within 5 minutes the representative said that they would ship out a new mouse immediately. The guy told me to scratch off the serial number on the broken mouse and pitch it in the garbage!

Within a week I had the new mouse in hand, and not having to hassle over shipping the old one back is what really gave Logitech an A+ in my book. Since then Ashley has also picked up the same mouse, and it all stems from the outstanding customer service experience I had with them. I feel more reassured purchasing a company’s product when they are confident enough to stand behind.

–And Your Winners–

Now it is time for you to chime in! Let us know in the comments who earned your “Best Customer Service 2007″ award.
