Asus Eee PC on Sale at Newegg

This article was written on October 31, 2007 by CyberNet.

Asus Eee PC Newegg is among the first retailers in the United States to start selling the much anticipated Asus Eee PC. They only have the version available (and in stock) which is equipped with the 4GB solid-state drive, and it costs $400 to pick it up. No, the cheaper 2GB model is not yet available.

You may remember that the Eee PC comes with Linux pre-installed, but the Eee PC does also support Windows XP. Computers with XP pre-installed will supposedly be shipping by the end of the year, but I don’t see any reason that you couldn’t install it yourself.

Here are some of the specs for the Asus Eee PC

  • Operating System: Linux
  • Screen: 7″ WVGA (800×600 resolution)
  • Processor: Intel 900MHz
  • Memory: 512MB DDR2
  • Hard Disk: 4GB Solid-State Disk
  • Graphics Card: Intel UMA
  • Battery Life: 3.5 hours
  • Dimensions: 8.86″ x 6.30″ x 0.79-1.26″
  • Weight: 2.0 lbs
  • Other: Webcam, 3 USB ports, MMC/SD memory card reader, 802.11b/g wireless

Unfortunately we won’t be seeing any of the models rolling in under the $200 price mark like we originally expected, but other versions are rumored to be coming out shortly. The price range for the three different models, including the one mentioned in this article, is supposedly between $300 and $400.

Microsoft Surface Appears in Sheraton Hotels

This article was written on August 13, 2008 by CyberNet.

Microsoft has announced today that five Sheraton hotel locations around the United States will be sporting the Surface computer. Each unit has been customized to offer entertainment and information about the local area, including satellite maps that make it easier getting from the hotel to your destination. All of this is done on the 30-inch digital table.

Just last week we got your hopes up of being able to purchase your own $12,500 Surface, but it didn’t take long for Microsoft to pull down the order form. I’m sure what Sheraton had to pay was significantly more than that since they had the software tailored to their needs, much like AT&T.

What’s the Surface capable of at a hotel? Think of it as a virtual concierge combined with a jukebox:

  • CityTips. At the guests’ fingertips are the Surface 360-degree satellite maps and tools to search for local restaurants and bars, entertainment, recreation, shopping, transportation and services, such as banks and pharmacies. Guests can discover all a city has to offer by simply moving their hands across Surface.
  • Sounds of Sheraton. Microsoft Surface also serves as a lobby-based digital jukebox, enabling guests to create personal music playlists by choosing selections from Sheraton’s exclusive offering of Sony BMG artists, including John Legend, Kenny Chesney and Lauryn Hill.
  • Sheraton Snapshots. Guests can explore Sheraton hotels and resorts throughout the world by simply browsing the Surface photo library of Sheraton resorts and hotel properties to help them plan for future business or leisure travel.

Unfortunately the Surface is only appearing at 5 Sheraton hotels, and I’d imagine that once people realize it’s available it will be hard to get some Surface time. If you still want to try and play around with it these are the five hotels you’ll want to target:

  • Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers – 811 7th Ave. 53rd St., New York
  • Sheraton Boston Hotel – 39 Dalton St., Boston
  • Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers – 301 East North Water St., Chicago
  • Sheraton Seattle Hotel – 1400 6th Ave., Seattle
  • Sheraton Gateway San Francisco Airport Hotel – 600 Airport Blvd., Burlingame

I have to admit that Microsoft appears to be on the right track with the Surface. Once the price starts to come down I’m sure these things will be all over the place.

Here’s an “ad” for the Surface in Sheraton hotels:

eBay Instant Sale: Recycle Old Gadgets, Get Some Cash

eBay Instant Sale.jpg

If you’re a gadget lover–and chances are if you’re reading this blog you are–then it’s likely you have a drawer or closet full of old and unused bits of technology. Cell phones, computers, game consoles, that sort of thing. Now eBay is making it easier to get rid of all of this unwanted technology with its Instant Sale program.

Users simply need to answer a few questions about the product, namely what it is and what sort of condition it’s in, and then they’ll be given a cash offer and a free shipping label. Once the item has been shipped and verified, the money will be transferred to your PayPal account. And even if the item has no value, you can still ship the item for free so that it can be recycled properly.

Japanese Table-top Gadget turns Plastic to Oil

There are millions of pounds of plastic in landfills around the country and floating in that big huge garbage patch in the middle of the Pacific Ocean – you know, the one the size of Texas – and only a fraction of the plastic used in the United States alone actually gets recycled. Thanks to one Japanese inventor and engineer, the table-top Blest Machine (Japanese) essentially takes plastic, melts it down, separates the gases and condensation from the melted plastic, and produces burnable fuel oil at the end. He says about two pounds of plastic will net you a quart of oil, and the oil can even be further refined into other petroleum-based products like gasoline.

What’s the catch? The second law of thermodynamics says no system is perfect, so before anyone thinks this is a perpetual motion scam, note that you actually have to dump energy into the Blest Machine to melt down the plastic, process it, and produce the oil on the other end.

This isn’t free energy by any stretch, but that’s not the point: the $9,500 table-top gadget isn’t designed to be an energy producer, it’s meant to give people and municipalities a way to use electricity (which can be produced using sustainable means) to get rid of plastic waste and turn it into something that’s useful today, like oil. Right now the Blest Machine is only available in Japan, but expect to see it pop up around the globe soon.

2007 Vaporware Awards

This article was written on December 21, 2007 by CyberNet.

Last week we speculated on who would win the coveted Vaporware awards for 2007 like the Optimus Maxiumus keyboard, or Spore – the new game from the Sims creator. The official list is out, and now we know who has officially won an award for “the year’s top technology products promised, hyped and scheduled, but not delivered.”  Without further ado, here is Wired’s annual Vaporware Awards for 2007.

vaporware awards 2007

10.  Steorn Orbo –  a magnetic motor device that generates free, constant energy. The scheduled public demo that was supposed to happen in July of this year was canceled.

9.  Tesla Roadster – this car is supposed to be turning heads already! It was originally scheduled for a launch in October, but this electric car never did.

8.  802.11n – this new Wi-Fi standard that’s supposed to be much faster has been a work in progress since 2006 and was set to be finalized in January of 2007. It was a no-show, and now it’s not expected until 2009…

7.  Diablo III – set to be the follow-up to Diablo II which was launched in 2000, Diablo III hasn’t been mentioned by Blizzard (gaming company) for a while.

6.  Windows Mobile 6 for Samsung Blackjack – BlackJack owners have been waiting in anticipation for WM 6 to surface, but it hasn’t.

5.  Windows XP Service Pack 3 – while the Release Candidate is out, Windows XP users still haven’t gotten their update!

4.  Optimus Maximus – This is one speculation we got right… no Optimus Maxiumus keyboard once again!

3.  Chinese Democracy – The Guns N’ Roses album in the works since 1994!

2.  Spore – Yet another item we speculated would be on the list is Spore – the new game from the Sims Creator. The earliest we’re expected to see it is April of 2008.

1.  Duke Nukem Forever – This one could be on here for life but as Wired says, “long live the king!”

“Hey ma, can’t talk, I’m on the Moon”

This article was written on February 22, 2008 by CyberNet.

cell tower on moon As technology continues to advance there is no doubt that our ventures in space will get more extravagant. NASA, believe it or not, has plans to establish a colony on the south pole of the moon sometime after 2020. But no colony would ever be complete without a cellphone network, right? NASA seems to think so, and that’s why they are whipping up plans to do just that around 2012.

The project is called MoonLite, and will offer both voice and data communication. This is NASA we’re talking about so you would expect data transfer speeds to be measured in megabytes or even gigabytes, but that’s not exactly the case. The download throughput will be an excruciatingly slow 3Kbps, and the upload will be 2Kbps. That’s like 5% as fast as dial-up! I don’t think the scientists that will be inhabiting the colony will be spending any time on MySpace with speeds like that.

Hopefully the scientists don’t sit there and text message each other while driving their lunar rovers because it will take just one wrong turn and they’ll be floating around in outer space. And you thought the call from Mount Everest was special.

The Balanzza Mini Luggage Scale Makes You Pack Light

Balanzza Mini

If you travel by air frequently, you already know most carriers charge you for checked baggage over a certain weight limit. To avoid paying out of pocket at the check-in counter, it helps to know before you leave the house how much your bags weigh so you can either leave some things behind or redistribute the load. That’s where the Balanzza Mini, a tiny, hand-held luggage scale, comes in.
Just attach the Balanzza Mini to your luggage and lift up your bag by the scale handle to see how much your bag weighs. The scale has a maximum supported weight of 100lbs, but if you’re carrying that much on a plane in one bag, you’re already got problems. Considering most carriers charge anywhere from $40 to $180 US for overweight bags, the Balanzza Mini’s retail price of $24.95 is a small price to pay to make sure you never pay weight fees again.
