Gboard for Gmail Users

PCWorld: The Gboard is essentially a standard numeric keypad that connects to your PC via USB. The specially labeled keys are programmed with macros that correspond to Gmail’s keyboard shortcuts. So, rather than having to remember that # moves an e-mail to the trash and e archives the current conversation, you can simply hit one of the 19 clearly labeled keys on this keypad.

iphone at 02

This coming Friday, November 9th, is another big launch date for Apple.  It’s the day that the iPhone officially goes on sale in the UK.  Apple’s press release says the phone will go on sale at 6:02 PM, but I’m sure that’s a typo and they meant to say 6:00. So here’s what you need to know:

Where:

  • The iPhone will be available at Apple Stores, 02, and Carphone Warehouse retail and online stores
  • Over 1300 different locations will have the iPhone for sale
  • At 02 stores, over 450 new employees were hired to be iPhone specialists

When:

  • November 9 @ 6:00 PM

Details:

  • Price: £269 for the 8GB model
  • Consumers will be able to purchase two iPhones per person on a first come first serve basis
  • Buyers must lock into an 18 month contract with service provider 02 (compared to 24 month contract here in the US, it’s not so bad)

Tariffs:

  • Three tariffs will be available starting at £35
  • Tariffs include unlimited usage of 02 mobile data network
  • Also includes unlimited use of The Cloud (largest single public Wi-Fi network in the UK)

Any of you UK’ers planning to line-up early on Friday to get your hands on an iPhone?

Eee Mobile PC Coming in Under $200

This article was written on July 16, 2007 by CyberNet.

Eee PCMobile computers continue to drop in cost, and as a result we get smaller PC’s that offer more bang for the buck. The low-cost mobile computer craze all started with the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) who’s goal was to create a computing device that could be sold for $100 each to developing countries. As word began to spread about how cheap this was going to be people around the world questioned whether a consumer-oriented model would be sold in retail stores.

The last I heard the OLPC is costing around $170 to manufacture which is well above their target cost. Other companies are stepping up to fill the consumer void left by the OLPC, and one of the first is ASUS. They have started to promote a $199 device called the Eee PC (pictured to the right) that will set the ultra-mobile PC market on fire.

The Eee PC will offer a few different configuration options, some of which inflate the price depending on your choice:

Display: 7"
CPU & Chipset: Intel mobile CPU & chipset (900MHz Intel Dothan)
OS: Linux/ Microsoft Windows XP compatible
Communication: 10/100 Mbps Ethernet; 56K modem
WLAN: WiFi 802.11b/g
Graphic: Intel UMA
Memory: 512MB, DDR2-400
Storage: 4/ 8/ 16GB Flash
Webcam: 300K pixel video camera
Audio: Hi-Definition Audio CODEC; Built-in stereo speaker; Built-in microphone
Battery Life: 3hrs (4 cells: 5200mAh, 2S2P)
Dimension & Weight: 22.5 x 16.5 x 2.1~3.5cm, 0.89kg (1.96lbs)

Word is that the Eee PC with the 4GB hard drive will cost $199 and the 8GB drive will be $299, but I didn’t see any mention regarding the cost on the 16GB drive. Another way they were able to keep the cost down (besides offering small Flash storage drives) is to use Linux as the default operating system. It is said that the computer works fine with Windows XP, although that would probably take up more precious storage space than it would be worth.

HotHardware was able to get their hands on the Eee PC for a little bit to play with and snap some photos. There are two different versions of Linux that can be used: one for novice users and one for experienced users. The one for Novice users create tabs for doing things like Internet, Work, Playing, and Settings while the advanced interface is full-blown Linux including a Start Menu and Desktop. Screenshots of this are at the bottom of the post.

All-in-all I think this will be an awesome device, and from the current specs I like it better than the Palm Foleo. It is supposed to be available later this year, and if it hits the shelves in time for the holidays I’m sure they could meet their sales goal of 200,000 units!

Alright here are some screenshots of the novice and advanced interface:

Sony Ericsson Introduces 8.1 Megapixel Camera Phone

This article was written on June 17, 2008 by CyberNet.

sonny ericcson c905.png

As a consumer, would you rather have a camera in a phone or a phone in a camera? What we mean by that is, these days it seems phone manufacturers throw a camera in as a second thought and it’s there, but not really quality. What if camera manufacturers were to take their quality cameras and include a phone with them? That’s what Sony Ericsson is trying to do with the C905 Cyber-shot.

The Sony Ericsson C905 Cyber-shot has an amazing 8.1 megapixel camera which includes a phone. They made sure not to skimp on features for either the phone portion or the camera. With this phone, you’ll have features like:

  • A whopping 9 hours of talk time
  • 380 hours of standby
  • Includes a-GPS with Google Maps
  • A2DP stereo Bluetooth
  • TV-out
  • Wi-Fi with DLNA support

The camera portion of the device features:

  • Face detection
  • Image stabilization
  • Smart contrast
  • Includes a 2.4″ glass display for viewing your photos
  • Comes with a 2GB Memory Stick Micro

There’s been no mention yet of what The C905 will cost when it’s released sometime in the 4th quarter this year, but we do know that it will come in three colors including black, silver, and gold.

Sony Ericsson is proud of their product and posted a press release describing the phone saying,

The C905 is Sony Ericsson’s first Cyber-shot slider and its most advanced camera phone yet. With an 8.1 megapixel camera and real camera flash amongst its cutting-edge capabilities, it offers easy photo-taking in a phone that derives its looks from a digital camera and offers the picture quality to match.

The one thing the iPhone and many other phones out there lack is a high resolution camera. Sony Ericcson could have done a really great thing for themselves by developing a great camera that includes a phone as well.

New Mercedes iPhone App: Hands On

Mercedes knows its drivers may lose their keys or even their cars but never their iPhones. Lose your giant luxury SUV at the mall? There’s an app for that. Click through to see how it works.

The main screen for the iPhone version of the app (the Blackberry version is boring) looks just like a Mercedes key fob and, essentially, works the same way. Unlock/lock the car or even locate it.

The locate feature use’s the car’s GPS and the phone’s GPS to provide instructions for how to get back to your car. And in case you’re worried the wife is going to find you riding dirty, the system overrides if you’re more than a mile away from the car. Philander in peace, Tiger.

Don’t want the kids getting their grubby hands on your M-Class? Lock the ungrateful rats out.

The “mbrace” system isn’t OnStar, Mercedes will tell you, but it’s OnStar. Access all those features without having to crash your car from your phone.

Screw up your CLK because you were too busy playing on your iPhone and left the parking brake on? The system will locate the nearest dealer to help fix your car and take a million dollars off your hands.

Forget the Mercedes dealership with a staff you actually like? You can find your selling, local or preferred dealer.

You must be moderately wealthy to live by all these Mercedes dealerships.

Developed by Hughes Telematics, this is rolling out on all new models and requires a monthly subscription.

Car Singing Auditions Promote Navigation System Online and on TV

SONY has launched a campaign to get us all singing in our cars.

“Singing in your car” takes an activity that we all do (often to the annoyance of fellow passengers) and turns it into an interactive TV and online contest. You can send in your auditions (posted to YouTube) and some of the best (what is the criteria?!) get featured in the TV CM! Susan Boyle eat your heart out!

sing-in-your-car-campaign-1

The first group of auditions has already been selected and their entries are up for all to see. The second wave of entries, where drivers and passengers sing “Easy Rider” (by Tamio Okuno) for a TV CM/music video, will be closing soon. On December 1 one of the auditions will be awarded a prize of “ten years’ vacation”. This means that, given the government-estimated average that Japanese people go on domestic trips 2.77 times a year and it costs 30,390 yen each time, the winner gets 842,000 yen ($9,500). Not bad.

The TV CM and music video will start broadcasting from mid-December, with a special 60 second TV ad on December 20 featuring all the auditions and entries so far. Finally, another winner from an additional round of auditions will be announced in January, the award being again the super “ten years’ vacation” cash.

Wait a minute. Why Sony? Why cars? Well, Sony is promoting the na-vu, a vehicle navigation system.

sing-in-your-car-campaign-2

The na-vu has all the usual map and GPS functions, plus live updates on traffic and congestion. Design is important too; it comes in three sizes and many colors (including pink!). But perhaps most interestingly, it is a mobile navigation system: it can be taken in and out of the vehicle, and has pedestrian and cyclist modes to guide you when you are on the move (but not in a car). Further, the wansegu (ワンセグ) digital TV functionality means that your vehicle becomes your living room (or it doubles-up as a portable TV), and you can play music and videos, and even send recorded data from your Sony Blue Ray to watch on the na-vu.

The Enhanced Human, SkyMall Style

I am ashamed of two things. 1) That in our quest for the cyborg life, we were beaten to the punch by SkyMall, and 2) that none of the following products are fake.

Let’s just get this first one out of the way: Not only does the Head Spa Massager look like someone in the 1970s designed it in a future-Sparta fashion, but it’s a massage helmet. You look ridiculous, and it can’t even secretly double as a sexual aid.

This handsome silver fox has it going on. I mean, he’s talking to a sexy lady, and a power call could easily come through his Bluetooth earpiece at any moment, right? Nope, he fooled you! He’s hard of hearing, and that’s just his Stealth Secret Sound Amplifier. (I laughed when I first saw this, but now it just makes me sad.)

Every cyborg I know of has a head-mounted camera, and since this 5-megapixel Digital Camera Swim Mask is only good for 15′ depth (that is, snorkeling or swimming pools), you might as well make the most of it and wear it on dry land too! Even has a cyborg-friendly LED that shines inside the mask, to let your friends know who’s part robot tell you when you’re shooting.

If sci-fi tells us anything, it’s that the bionic man (or woman) has great posture. Thankfully, the Posturetek Biofeedback System—it’s a shirt, but they call it a system—”senses incorrect posture and gently encourages posture correction.” My assumption is that it doesn’t use sharp spikes or electric shocks, but it’s still a tad sinister.

Snore correction makes up approximately 94% of SkyMall revenue, but only one, the SnorePro Snore Relief Device, attaches to your wrist and sends a “biofeedback digital pulse” when the log sawing kicks in. (Can you imagine having a business card with the word SnorePro emblazoned on it? Would that be awful or awesome?)

When you embark on the man-machine merger, it makes sense to complement some of that silicon with silicone, if you catch my drift. Hell, you got so much going on, nobody’s going to notice that you’ve shoved some Body Figure Enhancing Pads down your pants. Well, they’ll notice, but not in a bad way.

What good is the cyborg life if it doesn’t permit you to jump higher, run faster, have more energy, appear 2″ taller and “look like a million dollars”? The Gravity Defyers (spelling lessons sold separately) have been tempting travelers for ages with those very promises. Besides, its patented spring-loaded sole is found on no other shoe in the world pretty much ever, for some reason.

Locutus of Borg wasn’t much of a jumper—his footwear of choice skewed toward the comfort-illumination lines. That’s why he swore by the Brightfeet Lighted Slippers. They’re just the thing to slip on when you’re making the midnight trek from the regeneration chamber to the cube pissoir.

This week, Gizmodo is exploring the enhanced human future in a segment we call This Cyborg Life. It’s about what happens when we treat our body less as a sacred object and more as what it is: Nature’s ultimate machine.

PhoneBook Mixes iPhone with Print Publishing

Japanese developers Mobile Art Lab have come up with a unique way to mix technologies old and new.

iphone-phonebook-2

The PhoneBook is just that – a phone combined with a book. You take a specially produced picture book with a “playing window” in it and then read the pages whilst interacting with the screen. The makers worked on the project under the slogan “Analog on the Digital Technology” and we think they succeeded. It’s certainly more interesting than other e-books we’ve seen!

The implications may be that kids will use iPhones with this application arguably not as phones but as reading tools. They will be able to own a library of these special picture books and, after downloading the application, read in a totally new way.

Apple TV with DVR and a Flip-Phone iPhone?

This article was written on March 17, 2008 by CyberNet.

There are two bits of information about Apple today that are pretty interesting and both are regarding recent patent applications. The first is that a patent filing shows that Apple is considering adding DVR functionality to the Apple TV. To me, this is one of those features that should have come with it in the first place! The second patent application tells us that Apple is considering making a flip-phone version of the iPhone. Yes, a flip-phone.

First, about that Apple TV. According to AppleInsider, “a series of Apple patent filings published this week reveal a version of the Apple TV media device capable of browsing and recording live television programming in addition to serving up pre-aired content from the company’s iTunes Store.” Could this potentially end up being a TiVo competitor? Here are a few other interesting ideas that came from the patent regarding the device and the remote:

  • The remote looks similar in appearance to a second generation iPod nano
  • The remote would also include an LCD display and touch navigation
  • Users could download weeks of programming onto the remote interface for “later interaction”
  • On-screen programming interface guide would look much like what you see with Digital Cable
  • The interface guide would include “interface overlay menus”

apple tv patent

The other interesting patent filing tells us that Apple might be toying with the idea of a flip-phone version of the iPhone. The image below will help explain (at least a little) what Apple’s ideas are:

iphone flip phone

Engadget explains that the application actually describes it as a “dual sided trackpad.” This dual sided trackpad phone “would be translucent and boast touch sensitive panels on each side, allowing it to be used both when it’s opened or when it’s covering the main display.” Not only could this patent apply to a phone, it could also apply to a laptop.

Of course keep in mind that just because patents have been filed doesn’t mean that we’ll ever actually see any of this developed and sold.  It’s still fun to see what the brains over at Apple come up with though…
