Android 2.3 definitely supports game controls, may (or may not) be PlayStation-related

Google’s really been big today on emphasizing that Gingerbread is better than ever for game development, and that’s already bearing itself out thanks to a page culled from the Android 2.3 SDK where we see a handful of new keycodes in the system clearly targeted for gaming: L1, L2, R1, R2, Select, Start, and so on. Does it have anything to do with the Sony Ericsson Zeus Z1 and all the PlayStation phone noise, though? We imagine it lays some of the groundwork, but all told, it’s hard to say — after all, PlayStation famously uses shapes for its primary controls, and we wouldn’t be surprised if Sony were working on a separate development environment of some sort for PlayStation-branded titles rather than letting it all flow through the official Android SDK proper. We also don’t yet know whether Sony Ericsson’s gaming efforts are coming in the Gingerbread or the Honeycomb timeframe (though we’re definitely expecting news next February at MWC), but one way or another, game devs should find it a little easier now to map the controls they need.

The Top Wii Games for the Holidays

nintendo_wii_white.jpg

As mentioned earlier, we’re gearing up for the holidays here at Gearlog by bringing you the top titles for each of the top consoles. On Friday it was the Xbox 360. Today, it’s the Nintendo Wii.

As always, Nintendo’s library tends to skew a bit younger than its Sony and Microsoft counterparts. The list is full of familiar all-ages heroes like Kirby, Donkey Kong, and even Mickey Mouse.

But don’t worry–we’ve got something for the grownups, too.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Collector’s Edition Unboxed

World of Warcraft fans have been eagerly awaiting the launch of this Wrath of the Lich King expansion pack follow up since it was first announced back at BlizzCon 2009. Cataclysm hits stores shelves tomorrow, but we managed to get our hands on the game–and the Collector’s Edition, at that.

The new expansion pack features an environment redesign, two new playable races, a level cap increase from 80 to 85, guild advancement, rated battlegrounds, and a slew of other features.

The $80 Collector’s Edition, meanwhile, features a 176 page art book, The Art of the Cataclysm which features a ton of never seen images from the creation of the game. There’s also a behind-the-scenes DVD, a soundtrack album, a limited edition mousepad, and a 60 card deck of trading cards.

The pack also gives the user access to an exclusive in-game pet named Deathwing. According to Blizzard, “he may not be a breaker of worlds just yet, but Lil’ Deathwing will still proudly accompany heroes on their struggle to save Azeroth from his much, much larger counterpart.”

Gameloft Advent Calendar offers free iPhone, Android games until Christmas

Deals on iPhone and Android games aren’t exactly hard to come by at this time of the year, but the folks at Gameloft have cooked up something a little extra special for the month of December. They’ve just kicked off an Advent Calendar on Twitter, which promises to reveal a free iPhone games, Android games, and a few other surprises every day until December 25th — plus “a little bit more in the end.” While there may be a few duds in there, things have gotten off to a pretty good start — you can now grab the updated version of the classic PlayStation game Driver for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Kinect Sells 2.5 Million in 25 Days

Microsoft may be struggling to sell phones, but over in Xbox 360 land, things are going crazy. The Kinect controller-free controller has sold a whopping 2.5-million units in just 25 days.

The Kinect, which uses a combination of infra-red projectors and various cameras to track puny humans in their living rooms and therefrom control the on-screen action, has been a success since the pre-sale queues on launch-day, something usually seen in only the cultish world of Apple. And with the sales of Nintendo’s Wii declining after years of sold-out, hard-to-find success, it’s looking like the Kinect will be the new king of jumping-around-in-front-of-the-TV-and-looking-stupid this holiday season.

And don’t just take my word for it. Microsoft is optimistic in its press release, predicting five million units sold this Christmas, hopefully combating the festive flab with a bit of game-related exercise. Here’s a money-making tip for any speedy games developers out there: Write a Kinect-compatible game called “Guilty Gym Membership” and get it in stores for January 1st 2011, and you’ll be very rich indeed.

OnLive giving thanks to its Founding Members with free MicroConsoles

Have you been riding the OnLive bangwagon from the start? If so, you’ll want to heed this little Thanksgiving note from the company, which is offering a free MicroConsole to its early cloud gaming service users — whom it dubs Founding Members — provided they’ve bought licenses for at least two games in their time. The diminutive TV adapter typically costs $99, but qualifying Members will be able to get it for free if they pre-order it now, though they will have to spring for covering delivery costs. As to the more timid among you who only ever bought the one PlayPass, OnLive will let you have a free Full PlayPass (equivalent to a free game) in the place of the hardware. So, whichever way you slice it, it’s good to be first.

Chinese man plays MMO on titanic screen, pleads for higher pixel density (video)

Never mind your 103-inch plasmas or Guinness Word Record-holding stadium displays, real gamers do their thing on LCDs that span a cool seven thousand and five hundred square meters (translated into imperial measuring units, that’s… a lot!). What you see above is a little glimpse of an MMO enthusiast with a big passion and no less sizable wallet. The gent in question was displeased by the fact a competing guildmaster in the Chinese MMO Magic World Online 2 got to play in an IMAX theater, and therefore decided to one-up him in the only way possible: by hiring Beijing’s crazily oversized display (titled “All Beijing, look up!”) for a little session of supersized gaming. Jump past the break to see it on video.

Nintendo returning to CES after a 16-year absence

If there’s one event that’s immune to being overhyped, it’s the annual January expo of everything consumer electronics, known to you and us as CES. The only downer to this geek endurance test is that we’ve felt it’s been lacking a little on the gaming front lately, which is why we’re so giddy to hear the news that Nintendo will be rejoining the ranks of exhibitors over in Las Vegas in a few weeks’ time. CES 2011 will be the first time in 16 years that the console sales leader has deigned to pitch up a stand at America’s biggest tech show, with our suspicion being that the event will be used as an opportunity to remind the world about the upcoming 3DS handheld. Or to drop that Wii HD bombshell we’ve all been waiting for. Yeah, right!
