Guitar Hero said to not be dead yet, will continue to rock from beyond the grave

It was with heavy heart that we reported in February the Guitar Hero franchise was dead, done in by an addiction to half-baked sequels and a growing tolerance of commercialization. It felt like the series being put out to pasture was for the best, but maybe this old rocker still has some life in its leopard-print pants yet. Dan Winters at Activision sat down with gamesindustry.biz and clarified that “the brand won’t go away,” that the company just isn’t going to release a new one this year. You know what that means: next year you’d better be ready to dust off those flimsy guitars and rock once again like it’s 2009.

Razer Switchblade headed to China with help from Intel and Tencent

Remember the Razer Switchblade? It’s that 7-inch multitouch gaming device with a fully tactile and adaptive keyboard. It first stole our attention as a Windows 7 concept on the way to wowing us with a hands-on in January. Well, we’ve now got the first official launch country: China, with the help of Tencent Holdings, China’s largest internet service portal. Unfortunately, we still don’t have final specs on the Oak Trail clamshell, a price, or even a date. Fear not rest of world — China’s just the first market announced in what appears to be an attempt to highlight a new partnership between Intel and Tencent. Today the two companies announced plans to staff a new research center with 60 engineers (expected to grow to 200, eventually) who’ll work together on products and services for tablets and gaming in the Chinese market. Good luck guys, we hear the Chintendo Vii is fiercely competitive.

Four Grammy Awards renamed to include ‘video games music,’ underline its growing importance

Video games have never had a problem sitting alongside movie DVDs and music CDs (back when such things were distributed physically) in stores, so it’s frankly overdue to see them pop up in a mainstream awards show like the Grammys. The US Recording Academy has finally deigned to address video games and their aural landscapes as a separate class of entertainment, and has now amended four of its awards to spell that out. What was formerly known as “Motion, Television, or Other Visual Media” is now reclassified as “Motion, Television, Video Games Music, or Other Visual Media,” leading to there now being four awards that explicitly recognize excellence in video game music scores. Guess that was inevitable after Christopher Tin’s Baba Yetu won a Grammy this February, ostensibly because of its inclusion as one of the marquee songs on Civilization 4, but in a category entirely unrelated to gaming. Skip past the break to hear it for yourself, along with a couple of other favorites of ours.

Alienware’s M18x: a beautiful beast for the gamer on the go

A sneak peek from the Great White North showed us Alienware’s new mobile gaming flagship, but now we’ve got the real specs and a whole gaggle of pretty pics for you to drool over. It turns out the M18x has a massive 18.4-inch 1920 x 1080 Full HD display, an Intel Core i7 Extreme chip overclocked to a frag-tastic 4GHz, your choice of AMD CrossFireX or NVIDIA SLI graphics, up to 32GB of DDR3 RAM, a 3D-capable HDMI 1.4 port, WirelessHD for the cable-averse crowd, and five macro-programmable keys wrapped in a otherworldly anodized aluminum shell. We’re still not sure when you’ll be able to get your hands on one, but we do know it can’t get here soon enough. Would-be alien abductees can catch a glimpse of their new overlord in the gallery below — not to worry, no neuralizer’s included.

Alienware M18x appears on Dell’s Canadian site, glares at you from afar

Alienware M18x appears on Dell's Canadian site, glares at you from afarWe’ve been hearing rumors of an 18-inch addition to the Alienware line for some time, and now its big-eyed visage is making an appearance — in Canada. The M18x configuration page has gone live on Dell‘s Canadian site, though curiously it’s displaying what looks to be a picture of the M17x. The system starts at just over $2,000 CAD with a 2.8GHz Core i7 processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, 320GB of storage, and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M graphics. But, our more well-heeled neighbors to the north can step up to a 3.4GHz processor, 8GB of memory, 750GB of storage, and dual AMD Radeon HD 6970M graphics cards, pushing the price up nearly another $1,000. The 18.4-inch display manages a full 1080p resolution and you can have any operating system you like — so long as its Windows 7 Home Premium. The estimated ship date has this thing leaving the factory in early May, which means it should start hitting the domestic configurator soon enough.

Update: Daniel wrote in to let us know that the M14x is there as well — though it looks to be in the process of being taken down.

[Thanks, Nicklas]

Nintendo Tryvertises 3DS Games

We have spotted a lot more of the Nintendo 3DS Station’s around Tokyo lately. An in-store sampling terminal with a screen showing ads and information about Nintendo products, consumers who have their own DS can also use the console’s built-in wifi connectivity to receive sample demo games or updated game content for free.

The demo can be directly sent to your console and downloaded through the interface menu. It is stored inside your console but since it is not on a cartridge can only be played until you turn off the DS.

There was also a further service called “Touch! Try! DS!”, offering over 150 samples that you could play on your console using the unit’s wifi without downloading (i.e. by staying within the appropriate distance of the connection).

It is also possible to purchase new games for the DS using the Station terminal. After buying a prepaid Nintendo Points Card (or buying one through the online store using a credit card or through your mobile phone) you can input the card number, and then have the game data transmitted to your console.

Apple reportedly hires top UK gaming PR execs from Nintendo and Activision

As you may have noticed, Apple has been more serious about gaming lately that it was even during its Pippin-fueled haze in the mid-1990s, and it’s now offering yet more evidence of just how invested it is with a pair of new hires. While the company isn’t confirming the move just yet, MCV is reporting that Apple has snatched up Nintendo UK’s former head of communications, Rob Saunders, who just left the big N last week and will apparently be focusing on PR for iOS apps at Apple. What’s more, he’ll reportedly be joined at Apple by former Activision PR director Nick Grange, who’s said to be focusing specifically on the iPad — which, as we’ve seen, can be a pretty versatile gaming device in its own right.

MSI spits out four more Sandy Bridge laptops, including tasteful-looking F Series gaming rigs

If it seems like MSI is dropping a lot of laptops this week, you’re not imagining things. The company just announced the FX620DX and FX420 gaming rigs and two mainstream notebooks, the FR720 and FX720, some of which join the 16 laptops it unveiled at CES. The FR720 and FX720 are both beastly 17-inch desktop replacements, with prices ranging from $710 to $900 depending on whether you opt for an Intel Core i3, Core i5 or Core i7 CPU, and whether you stick with integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics or spring for one with a discrete NVIDIA GeForce GT520M card.

As for the gaming machines, we have to say they’re pretty conservative-looking, with black lids made from a non-peeling, scratch- and smudge-resistant material, and a handful of chrome accents and blue LEDs thrown in for good measure. The 15.6-inch FX620DX packs either a quad-core Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processor, NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M with 1GB of video memory, and a 720p webcam. The 14-inch FX420, meanwhile, comes with that same quad-core Core i5 CPU and AMD Radeon HD 6470M graphics, also with 1GB of memory. The FX620DX also comes with either a 1920 x 1080 or 1366 x 768 display, while the more diminutive FX420 just offers the latter. Other than that, though, these machines share the same DNA, including an six shortcut buttons, HDMI and VGA port, 4 USB ports (two of ’em USB 3.0), six-cell batteries, and hard drives ranging from 500GB to 750GB with speeds of either 5,400 RPM or 7,200 RPM. MSI hasn’t announced pricing or availability for the F Series, but hit the source link to peep these laptops’ very discreet designs.

Halo 3 Pushes Xbox Sales to the Top!

This article was written on October 16, 2007 by CyberNet.

halo 3 console When Halo 3 broke the record in the video game industry by selling over 1 million pre-orders, we knew September was going to be a huge month for Microsoft. Not only did they sell millions of dollars worth of Halo 3 games, they also sold millions of dollars worth of Xbox 360 consoles.  The official numbers that detail how many Xbox 360 consoles actually sold won’t be released until Thursday (October 18th), but we’ve got a pretty good idea at just how great of a month it was thanks to Wedbush Morgan Analyst, Michael Pachter.

According to Pachter, Halo 3 helped sell 450,000 Xbox 360s in the month of September. The number he’s given means that the Xbox 360 outsold the Wii by 25,000 units. That doesn’t mean that the coming months will be all downhill for Microsoft though. Pachter went on to say “Although we think that sales of Halo 3 accounted for virtually all of the growth during the month, we think that the game drove hardware sales and positions the industry for even greater sales in November and December, when many Halo players will be ready for a new challenge.  We are optimistic about software sales through the end of the year.”

Here’s the breakdown of the predicted sales for the month of September:

  1. Xbox 360 – 450,000 units
  2. DS – 430,000 units
  3. Wii – 425,000 units
  4. PSP – 252,000 units
  5. PS2 – 222,000 units
  6. PS3 – 150,000 units
  7. GBA – 65,000 units

Another factor that probably helped the Xbox take the #1 spot is that conveniently timed price cut. Back in early August Microsoft dropped the price of the Xbox 360 console by 50 dollars.  Considering Halo 3 costs a little over $50 for the standard edition, consumers were able to get the console plus the game for what the system originally cost. Not a bad deal!

In general, software sales are expected to reach $655 million this year which is 47% higher than in 2006.  With both the PS3 and the Wii launched late last year, it’s no surprise that 2007 will have been so successful. Pachter also predicts that a PS2 price cut is possible before the end of the year, and his guess is that it will be priced at $99! If that’s true, I imagine we’ll see software sales increase even further thanks to those who just can’t pass up a good deal on a console!

HTC Desire solves dodecahedron Rubik’s Cube, will blow your mind (video)

If this image doesn’t have you completely dumbfounded, scroll down and watch the video. Sufficiently awestruck? Good. Now, for a little background on exactly how someone got a pile of Legos and a smartphone to solve the devil’s puzzle Megaminx. The aptly titled Megaminxer enlists the Mindstorms NXT kit to do the dirty work and an HTC Desire, running a custom Android app, as the brains of the operation. Said app uses the phone’s camera to take individual images of each of the puzzle’s 12 faces, then processes the information and sends a signal via Bluetooth to the NXT controller, which in turn goes to town. Unfortunately, there’s no explaining how they got the Android to dance like that, but, really, why ruin the magic?

[Thanks, Stuart]
