Valve Says Happy Valentine’s Day with Love Tips and Portal 2 Pre-Orders

Valve Valentines Day

Just in case you’re looking for some alternative tips for what you should do on this lovely Valentine’s Day, Valve Software, makers of games like Half-Life, Team Fortress 2, and Portal, has some romantic advice for you on this very special day: nothing says “I love you” like a pre-order of Portal 2 in your Valentine’s name. They even put together this handy video from Aperture Science to prove the point. So before you go out and buy your sweetheart a giant diamond or a bouquet of flowers, it might make sense for you to watch this and remember it.
In all seriousness though, the video is a spoof designed to point out that Valve is taking pre-orders for Portal 2, the upcoming sci-fi thriller sequel to the highly acclaimed original. Pre-orders opened this morning, and Valve decided this was a great way to make sure everyone knew how important the day was: and that no one forgot this was Valentine’s Day.

Duke Nukem Forever “Balls of Steel” Collectors Edition Announced

Duke Nukem Forever - Balls of Steel Edition

If you’re having a difficult enough time believing that Duke Nukem Forever is actually going to come out, much less be released later this year, the news that Gearbox and 2K Games have unveiled a very special collector’s edition of the game will be even more difficult to swallow. The Duke Nukem Forever “Balls of Steel” Edition was announced first over at the First Access Club this morning and currently only members of the club have pre-order rights. Pre-orders for the general public haven’t been opened just yet.
The Balls of Steel edition will set you back $99.99 retail price, about $50 more than the regular game, but for your added cash you’ll pick up a ton of Duke Nukem related loot.
The package includes a certificate of authenticity, a Duke Nukem comic book, stickers and paper craft, Duke Nukem poker chips, a deck of cards, a set of dice with the radioactive emblem on them, Duke Nukem postcards, a 100-page hardcover book chronicling the story of the game over the past decade or so and concept art, a copy of the game, and what must be the biggest trophy: a bust of Duke Nukem himself, in all his glory.
When the collector’s edition is available for the public to pre-order, it will be a GameStop and Amazon exclusive, so you’ll have to act quickly before they sell out.

Thermaltake Level 10 GT case polishes up a classic, available now for $280

The Thermaltake Level 10, arguably the sweetest-looking enclosure to ever hit the mass market, has managed to find a chassis worthy of being called its successor in the shape of the behemoth you see standing before you, the Level 10 GT. It softens the aggressively modular aesthetic of the original, but in exchange delivers a more performance-focused design, replete with three 200mm fans, air filters everywhere you look, a neat little window so you can peek inside your full-sized tower of doom, and enough space to fit the very largest of modern graphics cards. Thermaltake is asking for $280 on its online store and you can order one up today. Video awaits after the break, though we wouldn’t skip out on the Flickr gallery below, either.

Monopoly Live adds a nagging, money counting computer to the Hasbro classic

Once again, technology might have just sucked the fun out of a beloved (or at least tolerated) past-time. Hasbro’s refresh of Monopoly — Monopoly Live — includes a ten-inch tower that sits in the center of the board, keeping an eye on it via IR technology. This bad boy rolls the dice, counts the money, and makes sure you don’t nudge your thimble someplace it shouldn’t be. Of course, the game’s basics remain intact: domination of your friends and loved ones with skill and greed — although we fail to see how kids are to properly learn about capitalism when they no longer have the ability to cheat. Coming soon for $50.

Activision kills Guitar Hero division to the consternation of fake musicians everywhere

Guitar Hero had its time in the sun as one of the most successful franchises in musical gaming. Still, it’s been no secret that the once-respected brand, owned by Activision, has experienced pretty steep declines in the past few years, especially on the lackluster Guitar Hero 5. So, surprising or not, the announcement today that Activision would disband the Guitar Hero team and kill off development of the next title in the series is a sad bit of news to hear (though in fact, not as sad as hearing, say, Chinese Democracy). This announcement comes on the heels of larger-scaled layoffs at Activision, and more cuts are rumored in the DJ Hero division, as well. At least we still have Rock Band, right?

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play may be headed to Verizon

If you’re looking for reasons not to jump on the Verizon iPhone bandwagon, here’s a pretty compelling, albeit unconfirmed, one: the Xperia Play may be headed to Big Red as well. In comparing Sony Ericsson’s thumb-friendly Android handset to the iPhone 4, Wirefly has listed VZW as the carrier for the Play. This is the first we’ve really heard of a US provider for the phone, though we’d hardly be surprised if Sony Ericsson opts to spam it out to all four major networks. It did as much in the UK, where every single operator will try to sell you one in April, and we don’t see why that strategy should change on US soil. The Xperia Play will be announced in full this Sunday, February 13th, when we might just learn more about its global availability… if we’re really polite and wear our PlayStation T-shirts, presumably.

Xperia Play coming to Canada, exclusive to Rogers?

O2, Vodafone, Orange, and T-Mobile UK… who else is getting Xperia Play, you ask? Anyone in North America, perhaps? Looks like the once (and in our hearts always) PlayStation phone has popped up on Sony Ericsson Canada’s site, and will be exclusive to Rogers — that is, if a certain tip that Mobile Syrup has received is to be believed. Either way, it looks like it’s less than a week until we get all the sordid details.

Love Plus Visa card gives otaku fans credit

First it was tours companies and karaoke. Then a bundle of phone accessories. Now Konami has shown its adept collaborative hand yet again by getting together with giant Visa to produce a credit card themed on the Love Plus game.

Whereas some people might be embarrassed when, producing their payment method at the cash register, it emerges decorated with pictures of three skimpily dressed anime school girls — after all, the credit card is a archetype of adulthood, right? — the strength of otaku collect-ability cannot be underestimated.

Announced back in December, the Visa card can now be yours, but only until the end of April. Members can also receive a free present of an ID card for the fictitious Towano Private High School, where the three heroines from the Love Plus game attend, presumably so you can feel you are actually living out the role of the game’s protagonist.

These kinds of collaborations show how the Love Plus brand can be much more widely accepted than a snap judgement might conclude. Credit cards are traditionally seen as a status symbols but here otaku subculture can be married with it to produce yet another lifestyle outlet for displaying (or even flaunting?) your hobby.

Japan is refreshingly free from snobbery or any of the barriers that tend to restrain gaming elsewhere to a niche, and Love Plus is decidedly not ashamed of itself and neither are its fans. It might be easy to dismiss these kinds of innovations as “juvenile” but we perhaps need to give the makers and consumers credit, as Visa has done (quite literally), and recognize what is now a powerful brand.

Surely the most mainstream so far of its collaborations, what could Konami have up its sleeve next for the series? A Love Plus theme park?
