AMD Eyefinity eyes-on, prepare to fall for landscape goodness (video)

Sure we’ve seen it before, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t share what we stumbled upon at AMD’s Fusion Zone at IDF 2011. Laying before you is a 5 x 1 landscape Eyefinity setup, powered by an upcoming unreleased 8-core FX CPU paired with a single Radeon HD 6990. For those of you keeping score at home, that’s four displays connected via mini-DisplayPort and the fifth over DVI. Not much more to say, so peep the gallery below or hop past the break for a video of the bodacious rig running Dirt 3.

Myriam Joire contributed to this report.

Microsoft shows off Xbox Live on Windows 8 (video)

Yeah, we knew it was possible, but knowing and seeing are two very, very different animals. Just before closing the doors at Build 2011, Microsoft’s Avi Ben-Menahem took the time to briefly showcase what would be possible with Xbox Live and Windows 8. It’s obviously in a very early state, but already we’re seeing signs of cross-platform multiplayer game support, and an (unsurprisingly) Metro-style universe supplanting the existing Games for Windows Live. We get the feeling that Microsoft’s thinking this one through; rather than just shoehorning a gaming element in, things like “cloud saves” and dedicated Music / Video panes will be around to enjoy. Moreover, participation in the Xbox Live development program will purportedly be free, and if Ben-Menahem has his way, this will bring “everything you know and love on Xbox 360 and Xbox Live to Windows.” Bold. Peek the pair of videos just after the break.

The Tools You Need to Survive a LAN party

Online gaming may be the preferred form of multiplayer showdowns these days, but the LAN party still exists. They’re grueling, caffeine-fueled affairs that can span multiple days, and intimidate the uninitiated. So here’s everything you need to fit in. More »

‘Phantom sensation’ haptic tech recreates the feeling of getting virtually stabbed

When it comes to gaming, the more realistic the better, right? Sure, it’s all fun until we start talking about being virtually sliced with a battle axe or pelted with a rocket launcher — exactly the idea behind a new technology dubbed “phantom sensation.” Researchers at the University of Electro-Communications know that to virtually recreate the feeling of touch, they need to apply vibrations to two points of skin. Taking the idea one step further, they applied the stimuli to either side of the body to mimic what it might feel like if the object actually passed through. Using a tweaked Wii, as an item in the game travels through the player’s hand, the top sensor vibrates intensely at first, then subsides to zero. At this point, the bottom probe kicks in, going from zero to strong until the object is cleared — leaving the player feeling slightly violated and virtually gored. Check out the (relatively) painless demonstration video after the break.

Razer unveils arcade fightstick prototype at TGS, looks to gaming community to hammer out the details

It seems like the folks at Razer are taking the company’s “for gamers, by gamers” motto to heart, today unveiling a new customizable PC / Xbox 360 arcade stick at Tokyo Game Show that won’t even hit production until the fightstick community disassembles, mods, and judges the heck out of it. The yet-to-be-named arcade controller will first make its way to select applicants of a closed beta program, putting the rig in the hands of some 200-plus gamers who, after having their way with it, will provide the outfit with tips on how to fine-tune the final product.

Razer’s TGS staff gave us a brief overview of the unit, and let us swap around wires, pop out buttons, and fiddle with the rig’s faceplate. The prototype unit is built with Sanwa Denshi components, but Razer tells us that mod-minded gamers are free replace, modify, or otherwise tinker with any of the controller’s major parts without fear of voiding its warranty — only the stick’s control board is off limits. Beta registration is already open, and the first test units should ship out sometime next month. Check out the gallery below for an eyeful, or point your peepers up top for a demo straight from the TGS show floor. Want more text? Hit the break for an official press release.

Nintendo 3DS extended slide pad add-on, first hands-on

Nintendo may be AWOL on the TGS show floor (as usual), but that’s not stopping Capcom from strutting the big-N’s hardware in its stead — we dropped by its booth for a gameplay-free handling of the 3DS extended slide pad add-on. The control-extending cradle is every bit as bulky as it looks, killing any hope we had of cramming the rig into our pocket. The trade-off? It’s much more comfortable to hold than the naked 3DS, giving our meaty hands a smooth, contoured surface to grip. The new right-hand circle pad feels just as solid as the handheld’s dedicated pad, and didn’t significantly obstruct our access to the 3DS’ face buttons. All in all, the cradle is a comfortable, if awkwardly large extension to the 3DS that doesn’t seem to compromise the handheld’s existing input. Hit up the gallery below to size up the plump peripheral for yourself.

Nyko’s $30 Zoom for Kinect now shipping to tiny-roomed gamers worldwide

Kinect ownership means you’ve got to keep a good ten square feet of space totally free to play in, and that’s nearly impossible for many inner-city, bedroom and dorm-room gamers. Fortunately for them, Nyko has developed a solution so simple it’s positively genius — clip-on lenses that reduce the distance the Kinect can see, bringing players closer to the TV. After the break you’ll find a video and press release — but more importantly, the Nyko Zoom is available right now for $29.99 in all good retailers, and some of the bad ones too, probably.

Xbox Live functionality confirmed for Windows 8

Microsoft today re-confirmed that it will be bringing Xbox Live functionality to PCs — a move that will come courtesy of the newly showcased Windows 8. The integration — titled, simply enough, Xbox Live on Windows — will bring the service’s gaming, music, movie and TV content to Win 8 devices. The software giant promises to shed more light on the move later in the week, with a Build 2011 session for app developers interested in harnessing the service’s features.

Nintendo 3DS to add 3D video capture, upgraded eShop and more

Satoru Iwata came on stage at Nintendo’s pre-Tokyo Game Show shindig and announced the 3DS will be getting a few upgrades soon. No word on any hardware changes — yet — but owners can expect 3D video capture as well as upgrades to the Street Pass Mii Plaza and eShop. The press conference is still ongoing, so check back for more details as they’re announced or watch the live video stream (in Japanese) embedded after the break.

Update: And it’s all over! Nothing else new to speak of on the hardware front, and we didn’t catch any more news about those software changes either. We’re just getting our TGS team on the ground in Japan now, so expect more news in the days to come.

Nintendo launching ‘Misty Pink’ 3DS handheld on October 20th

You heard right — The Big N’s own Satoru Iwata just announced that a “Misty Pink” Nintendo 3DS console would be shipping (at least in Japan) on October 20th. Funnily enough, that was just after showing a chart proving that right around half of all DS gamers are ladies. (But Iwata — what if the dudes dig pink, too?) At any rate, no specific price was mentioned, giving us some level of certainty that no premium will be attached.
