Nintendo ‘not satisfied’ with online efforts, but no big changes in store

Le sigh. For years now, Nintendo‘s online efforts have quite clearly lagged behind those of Sony and Microsoft, both of which have placed a priority on nailing online multiplayer and making it part of the draw for prospective buyers. Xbox LIVE is a entire universe of online goodies, and it’s the exception rather than the rule to see a major title launch on the 360 sans online play; in many ways, Sony sings a similar tune. Nintendo, meanwhile, seems to keep online play on the back burner, occasionally throwing it in where it’s easy enough to add but never really going out of its way to make sure the latest AAA title will allow Bobby and Jacky to play from across the street. During an investors meeting last week at E3, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata confessed that he’s “not currently satisfied with the online efforts that we have made so far,” and that the Big N is “working at ways to improve those.” In an episode of corporate double-speak to end all corporate double-speak, he followed up with this gem: “On the other hand, I do not think that online functionality is something that we should be devoting resources to for every single product.” Seriously, Iwata? You can’t think of a single reason why the next installment of Balls of Fury could benefit from online support? For shame.

Xbox Live family subscription plan available starting in November for $99

Microsoft‘s just dropped details on its new Xbox Live family subscription plan. Starting in November, it will offer the Gold Family Pack, enabling up to four users to have Xbox Live Gold subscriptions, for $99.99 a year. It’ll also debut the Family Center, a new menu accessible from the dashboard for customizing account settings. We’ve certainly wished for something like this in the past, and the pricing sounds like a pretty good deal to us — we’ll be able to afford a new cap for our avatar, afterall! Full press release is below.

Wii will soon get Multiplayer Online Games

This article was written on March 13, 2007 by CyberNet.

GamespywiiWii fans, get ready to play games online! Nintendo is once again teaming up with GameSpy to bring multiplayer online games to the Wii, something Nintendo has been criticized for previously.

The technology from GameSpy would be provided to game publishers so that they can incorporate the multiplayer online option into their games.  This means that people would be able to create lists of friends for different games, advanced matchmaking would be possible, and comprehensive rankings would give you the bigger picture of how you stand-up to players around the world.

The first game that will have this option is Pokemon Battle Revolution which will be launching late June, with others following.

This comes shortly after Sony announced their Playstation Home, an online virtual world to respond to the complaints that they were lacking in the online support area.

What games would you like to see incorporate the multiplayer online feature?

The Game Gripper Gives Your Android Phone a Gamepad

Game GripperIf you have a Motorola Droid, a Motorola BackFlip, or an LG Ally, and you love to play video games on your phone, you’ll want to get your hands on the Game Gripper. It’s an attachment for the keyboard of your phone that turns it into a full gamepad, complete with directional pad and discrete buttons for different actions. The buttons on the Game Gripper match up with individual buttons on your phone’s keyboard, so you can map them to functions in your favorite game and then attach the game gripper to play.

Each button has a discrete switch under it so you’re not pressing two buttons on your keyboard with one press on the Game Gripper.  The Game Gripper fits snugly over your phone’s keyboard, and is designed for people who want to load up an emulator on their phone and play some old NES and SNES games.

Right now the Droid, BackFlip, and Ally are the only supported phones, but the creators are working on models for the Devour and N900, and welcome requests for additional phones. The Game Gripper comes in a number of colors and styles, and retails for $14.99. You can buy additional buttons for $3.99.

Microsoft confirms: $199 new Xbox 360 coming soon, as well as Kinect bundles

Well, none of this will come as a big surprise here, but it’s always nice to hear it straight from an official source. Microsoft has confirmed that a $199 version of new Xbox 360 will be coming in the fall to replace the now-$149 Arcade, which is no longer in production. In addition, the company’s also spilled a few more beans — Kinect will be available as a bundle with the new Xbox 360, and though there isn’t any official pricing information on that one just yet, we’ve seen some telltale evidence on that front which would lead us to believe it’ll run somewhere in the neighborhood of $399 for an Elite and $299 for the Arcade. So now you know.

ForceTek XIO: the gaming controller that hurts you, not the TV (video)

Forget the Wiimote, PlayStation Move and Kinect; here’s a controller that actually makes you feel the games. At E3 earlier this week, startup firm ForceTek was seen demoing its XIO Virtual Gaming System — a rather fancy name for a force-feedback arm exoskeleton that “provides a controlled resistance” to your arm and wrist movement. The rig sure looks like a great addition for action games — imagine feeling a virtual basketball bouncing, or your virtual machine gun recoiling, or even the reaction force from a virtual punch. Want it now? Try next year, when the XIO will apparently ship at a “competitive” price comparable to that of a guitar for Guitar Hero. See the controller in action after the break, and try not to wince.

SteelSeries shows off ultra-durable Spectrum headset, we fail to rip it a new one (video)

We’re sure that SteelSeries is mighty pleased with the audio quality of its brand-new Spectrum 5xb gaming headset, but company reps didn’t introduce the product as such. They wanted us to walk away knowing three things, and the first was that we could beat the living crap out of them. Right in front of our eyes a product designer twisted the headband a full 180 degrees, let it snap back into place, then started yanking hard on the braided nylon cord (video after the break) while a dumbfounded expression crossed our face. We tried the very same, but couldn’t get the cord to budge. On the off-chance you don’t care to test durability for yourself, the phones also break into three pieces for transport.

While the second tenet of SteelSeries’ presentation was comfort (and these circumaural cans are comfortable, to be sure), the third was a prototype Xbox 360 device called the AudioMixer that will ship both bundled with the peripheral and separately as well. Plugging into your console and the base of a controller, the AudioMixer lets you connect a PC headset, then automatically balances voice chat and game audio using an on-board processor chip. There are individual volume dials, too, if you just need to shut that swearing ten-year old up. No price as yet, but both this Spectrum 5xb and a less feature-packed younger sibling will ship in Q3. Full press release and semi-destructive video after the break.

Valve says Apple, NVIDIA and ATI are working to improve Mac gaming performance

We’ve already seen some evidence that Macs running Steam are generally more powerful than PCs running Steam, and it looks like Apple is busily working to make sure that all potential performance is put to good use. As Valve’s Rob Barris has confirmed on the company’s forums, Apple, ATI and NVIDIA are all “involved” in improving Mac gaming performance, and that “performance is going to improve as drivers are updated.” Barris further went on to say that he expects “modest improvements in short term and larger ones in longer term,” but wouldn’t offer any specific dates as to when some of those updates might roll out.
