Video Kinect: video chat and stream sharing over Xbox Live and Live Messenger

Digg this! Xbox Live and Windows Live Messenger are about to meet up in a very personal way — Microsoft has just announced a new video chat service called Video Kinect, which serves as a logical extension of its brand new Kinect voice- and motion-sensing control system. But it’s not just video calling, no sir, you’ll be able to watch movies, news, sports, and the like together with whoever you’re chatting with. Additionally, thanks to a motorized base and a new skeleton-tracking feature, the Kinect unit will also follow users as they move around the room. Yup, not creepy at all.

Be Careful If You Are Renting Xbox 360 Games From GameFly

This article was written on January 02, 2006 by CyberNet.

Xbox 360 Scratching

If you plan on renting your Xbox 360 Games from GameFly you might want to be careful with those games. They decided that too many games are getting scratched and I am sure that they cannot afford losing that many games, so each person will be allowed one scratched game and after that you are paying for it! Maybe Microsoft will soon fix the Hitachi-LG GDR-3120L DVD drive since this is an obvious problem.

We have received reports that certain XBOX 360 consoles have caused damage to GameFly videogames. Unfortunately, we have been notified that you recently returned a damaged XBOX 360 game. As a precaution, we have removed all XBOX 360 games from your GameQ. Please contact Microsoft at 1-800-4MY-XBOX. Please do not rent XBOX 360 games until you have resolved this issue. In the future, should GameFly receive XBOX 360 games from you that have been damaged, you will be charged a replacement fee.

Archos 5 Internet Tablet gets game-changing OpenGL support in 2.0.15 update (video)

Speedy browser aside, the Archos 5 Internet Tablet started as the runt of the Android litter, but the ugly duckling is headed towards swanhood — while officially, it’s still stuck with Android 1.6, the tablet’s French manufacturer has just transformed the media machine into what looks like a stellar Android game system as well. Archos’ 2.0.15 update gives the Archos 5 support for OpenGL, letting it run games like Speed Forge 3D and Racing Thunder II at a fantastic clip. Best of all, you won’t have to wait two shakes to test it out for yourself; there’s a 89MB download with your name on it at our source link. Video after the break.

[Thanks, Tom]

NVIDIA shows 16 new Optimus laptops at Computex, teases GTX 460M GPU

Just in case you were wondering where and when you might get a taste of the Optimus elixir, NVIDIA has handed us a detailed list of Computex debutants that will be taking the graphics switching technology with them to retail. A total of sixteen new Optimus machines are on show in Taipei, and although ASUS is still the biggest purveyor (with six SKUs, not counting previously announced products), Lenovo and Acer have also jumped on board, with the IdeaPad Y460 and a pair of Packard Bell EasyNotes, respectively. Notably, the FX700 above from MSI is marked as using an “unannounced” next-gen graphics chip, which we suspect might be the GTX 460M, a mobile GPU that NVIDIA is showing, but not talking about yet. Guess that’ll be slotting in just below the recently unveiled GTX 480M. We’ve got pictorial evidence of the 460M’s existence after the break, along with the full list of new Optimus-ized machines, which you can also scope out in the gallery below.

Nintendo trims DSi and DSi LL prices in Japan, adds new color options for bigger console (updated)

Good news for Nippon-based handheld lovers: from June 19, Nintendo will be selling the DSi at a new reduced price of ¥15,000 ($165), accompanied by a more affordable DSi LL, which lands at ¥18,000 ($198). That will make the jumbo portable console cheaper than the regular-sized one costs today, while the whole effort seems clearly aimed at maintaining the market for Nintendo’s classical wares after it blows all our minds with its 3DS debut at E3 in a couple of weeks. We look forward to it, we just wish this price cut would go global — Europeans need love too, you know.

Update: We’ve also just learnt Nintendo is bringing out a trifecta of new color options for the Japanese LL: blue, yellow and green jumbo DSis will be available on June 19, right alongside the price trim. Come past the break to see the other two hues.

OnLive offering one year free membership to pre-registrants

Smart move by OnLive today. The controversial streaming game service is offering to waive the $14.95 monthly access fee for a full year (originally it was 3 months) for anyone who enthusiastically pre-registered early — many of you we suspect. It’s even tossing in a coupon for a free game when you register for the offer. The only catch seems to be the credit card required to complete registration as proof that you’re over 18. If you didn’t pre-register then tough luck, no offer for you. But at least you can take comfort in knowing that a small army of gamers will be taking the service to task unencumbered by membership fees. In other words, we’ll know right quickly if OnLive can live up to its “ultra high-performance” streaming gameplay on entry-level PCs and Macs.

[Thanks, Michael M.]

Rock Band 3 purportedly gaining keytar peripheral, infinite amounts of our love

Look, we’ve no qualms with keyboards — Elton John is permanently embedded in our playlists, it’ll be the first instrument we teach our robotic children, and it’s easily the most underrated part of Justin Bieber’s spectacularness. But there’s no arguing that having a keytar peripheral is far, far more awesome in the grand scheme of things. According to the same mole on ArsTechnica that has correctly nailed a new PS3 bundle, the PSP go and Xbox 360 price cuts, Rock Band 3 will feature a new keytar peripheral, which will undoubtedly destroy our productivity for an indefinite amount of time. We’re also told that Mad Catz will be taking over the production of RB hardware, leaving Harmonix only responsible for touching up the software. There’s still no indication of when this mythical device will be hitting your local Game Stop, but it’s certainly safe to slide your pre-order alert system to Orange.

Drive a Ferrari in Your Living Room

ThrustmasterFerrari.jpg

You may never get behind the wheel of a Ferrari, but Thrustmaster is offering the next best thing. In June, the gaming peripheral company is releasing the Ferrari Wireless GT Cockpit 430 Scuderia Edition, a cockpit ensemble that includes a wheel and pedal set. The entire contraption folds up small for storage or transportation.

The Ferrari cockpit weighs 23 pounds, so it’s stable, and it’s built with a wide, solid base. It has a wireless range of more than 30 feet and can run for 50 hours on a set of batteries. It can also be adjusted to fit either kids or adults. Pick one up next month for $249.99.

Windows Phone 7 pops up on a Samsung prototype device, plays Twin Blades

Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore certainly piqued our interest at MIX by demoing Windows Phone 7 on an unidentified Samsung handset, but our excitement soon faded when we found out it was just a hacked-up Omnia i8910 and not a real phone. Still, the Sammy remains only the third WP7 device we’ve seen other than the ASUS-built test mule and the prototype LG Panther that’s been popping up recently after debuting on the Engadget Show, so these two videos of it running a recent WP7 build at reMIX in France is still quite notable — the OS seems fast and responsive, and we’re told everything on the device was functional, including the GPS and camera. What’s more, there’s a demo of an Xbox Live Arcade / iPhone game port called Twin Blades by Press Star Studio — it was done in a week by one programmer using 90 percent of the Xbox Live code. That’s impressive, to say the least.

Of course, this device may look like an Omnia, but it doesn’t have the Omnia’s OMAP3 processor — as per WP7’s requirements, the internals have been swapped for a Snapdragon-based board. We’re still waiting for Microsoft and its partners to show us some more interesting hardware — let’s face it, the Panther and this Samsung are almost identically boring — but there’s no denying the software itself looks to be coming along quickly. Now let’s just hope it launches with enough heat to save Microsoft from another executive shuffle. Video after the break.
