Interact With Advertisements In Your Train Station

This article was written on June 18, 2006 by CyberNet.

Have you ever been sitting in the train station bored out of your mind? Well, this is a simple solution for that. The video above is a good demonstration of advertisements that will probably become more prominent over time.

There are several different advertisements that you will see while watching the video. They cleverly interact with people as they are stepped on. The advertisement for orange juice (about 30 seconds into the video) shows a ripple effect on the image which makes it look like someone stepped in a puddle. After about 1 minute and 20 seconds you will see an advertisement where people kick around blocks on the ad.

While this may not intrigue you that much it definitely catches the attention of young children. While watching the movie you will see several children walking over the advertisements on purpose because they think it is fun. It wouldn’t surprise me if we started to see these popping up in department stores around the toy aisles.

CyberNotes: Changing The Look Of Digg v3 Using CSS

This article was written on June 29, 2006 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Tutorial Thursday

It was just Monday that Digg v3 launched with a new breath of life. However, some people were not too fond of how Digg changed the layout. The most talked about change was the placement of the sidebar on the left-side.

There are several sites (like this, this, and this) that have come up with new CSS code that will overwrite the code that Digg already has in place. So how do you use this CSS code to redesign Digg?

Digg v3

It is actually amazingly simple for Firefox users (I haven’t tried this on other browsers). To make it as simple as possible you could just download the Stylish extension. You just need to copy the CSS code into the extension. You can then enable and disable different CSS styles as you please.

While Stylish makes it really easy I always try to minimize how many extensions I use to prevent memory leaks. So here is how you do it without using an extension:

  1. Browse to your Firefox Profile. In Windows XP/2000 it should be located at C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\XXXXXX.default\. Here is some help on locating your Firefox Profile.
  2. Open the chrome folder.
  3. If you do not have a file called “userContent.css” then copy the file “userContent-example.css” and rename it to userContent.css.
  4. Open up the userContent.css file in a text editor like WordPad.
  5. Add your CSS code to the end of the file. You will find the code that I used below.
  6. Save and close the file.
  7. You will have to restart Firefox in order to see the changes on Digg.

That is it! You should now have a customized version of Digg. Feel free to tweak with any of the CSS code until you have it the way you like it. Here is the code that I ended up using:

@-moz-document domain(digg.com), domain(www.digg.com) {
.sub-menu .tool strong { font-size: 11px !important; font-weight: bold !important; padding: 0px !important; margin: 0px !important; background-image: none !important;}
.news-summary { margin-bottom: 12px !important; margin-top: 12px !important; }
.digg-count { margin-top: 3px !important; }
h2 { font-size: 18px !important; }
h3 { font-size: 13px !important; font-weight: bold !important; letter-spacing: normal !important; }
.toggle a, .view-all a, .side-friends a, ul a { font-weight: normal !important; font-size: 11px !important;}
#top_ad, #item_ad, #footer, .copyright, .top_ad_image, .banner_ad, .comments_ad_image {display: none !important;}
.digg-count a strong {font-size: 14px !important; font-weight: bold !important; }
.sub-menu li .toplinep { width: 138px !important; }
.comment {width: 710px !important;}
.news-digg img { padding-top: 4px !important; padding-left: 1px !important; }
h3 a { border: none !important; background: none !important; font-weight: bold !important; font-size: 11px !important; letter-spacing: normal !important; text-decoration: underline !important; padding-left: 3px !important; }
.news-submitted { margin-left: 3px !important; padding-left: 0px !important; }
p { margin: 3px !important; }
#contents, #sidebar { float: left !important; border: none !important; background: none !important; font-size: 11px !important;}
#container {background: none !important; }
#sidebar {padding: 20px 0 1em 35px !important;background-position: 0 0; }
#footer {background: none !important;}
}

So now that you have Digg customized you start to think about how many other sites this technique might work for, right? This technique will work for many sites and userstyles.org already has hundreds of CSS styles that people have developed. These styles will take you to a whole new level of customization!

About iGas – For iPhone & iGoogle

This article was written on January 12, 2008 by CyberNet.

We’ve created our first iPhone App and iGoogle Gadget today, both at the same time! We figured it would be easier, as they say, to kill two birds with one stone. What we’ve put together is a service to lookup local gas prices via MSN Autos, and display the information in a fashion that is optimized for small areas.

Note: As you can imagine this is only for United States residents.

Our goal was to create something that wasn’t gaudy and hard to read, but at the same time we wanted to keep the load on our server to a minimum. We managed to reuse some JavaScript code from an existing iGoogle gadget, rework it, and develop it so that it can be used as a standalone website or as an iGoogle gadget. This is what the result looks like:

iGas Results

Once you begin using it you’ll notice that we’ve kept all of the ads off the service because it needs to load as quickly as possible since many users will be accessing it over a mobile Internet connection.

You can sort the results by the unleaded price, plus price, premium price, diesel price, or even by the name of the gas stations. This will help you quickly find the cheapest gas for the grade you need, but there’s one thing you should know. Some gas stations don’t report their prices for all of the various types of gas available. When you sort by the price of premium gasoline, for example, we remove all of the results that don’t have any data available for that particular grade. That’s why you’ll almost always see fewer results when you sort by any type of gas besides unleaded.

Under the price of each gas station is the date that particular price was retrieved. MSN is fairly good about having the most recent data, but often times it is still a day or two old. Don’t blame us for price inaccuracies.

UPDATE (01/16/2008): We’ve made the addresses clickable so that a Google Map will be displayed. If you’re on the iPhone the Maps application will open up, and from there you can get directions.

–Mobile/iPhone Setup–

For mobile/iPhone users to start using the service, it’s pretty simple. Just point your browser to http://cybernetnews.com/igas, enter in your zipcode, and select how you want the results sorted.

iGas Homepage

I recommend bookmarking the site after you have performed a search, because it will always take you directly to the gas prices for that particular zip code. It just saves you some hassle from having to enter in the zip code each time, and there is always a button at the bottom of the results page to change the zip code.

–iGoogle Setup–

In just a couple of clicks you can have local gas prices showing up on your personalized iGoogle homepage as well. Just click this button to add the gadget to iGoogle:

Add to Google

And then enter in the zipcode and pick how you want the information sorted:

iGas iGoogle

This gadget also looks great on the iGoogle homepage that is optimized for the iPhone.

The Power of Thoughts to Control Objects

This article was written on July 20, 2007 by CyberNet.

Imagine if you could control objects around you with your thoughts, like a robot made specifically for those with special needs. Or, imagine controlling a video game with your thoughts instead of a controller. The idea may seem far-fetched, but it’s not. The video below will explain exactly what I’m talking about:

Amazing, isn’t it? I can’t imagine wearing a device that would allow me to control something with my thoughts.  On the NeuroSky website they mentioned that their technology is suitable for markets like consumer electronics (this could be a big one, especially with video games), Health, Wellness & Safety (robots for elderly and disabled), and Education & Training.

I have a feeling we’ll be seeing this technology available in the consumer market sooner rather than later.

Remove “Accessory Connected” Screen from Jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch

This article was written on October 28, 2009 by CyberNet.

iphone accessory connected.pngLast week I purchased a car interface kit that gives me the ability to hook my iPhone up to the audio system that I have installed in my car. The install went fairly smooth, but I was rather disappointed with the level of control I had over my iPhone using the audio controls on my car. I thought to myself “hey, no biggie… I’ll just control the audio through my iPhone.” Apple, however, didn’t agree with that idea.

When I went to pull up the iPod portion of my phone I received the pretty little icon that you see to the right. It told me that I had an “accessory connected,” and there was basically no way for me to control the audio using the native iPod app. If I used a third party app, such as something that provided streaming Internet radio, there were no issues. So I knew it was possible to control the audio using my iPhone, and then I started to see how many other people had the same complaint.

Apparently there were quite a few users that were just as upset by this, and that’s when I happily came across a Cydia package for my jailbroken iPhone. Just do a search for “NoAccessorySplash” on the ModMyi repository and you’ll be ready to roll. Once installed it will bypass this screen so that you can control your audio through the device connected to the dock port or on the iPhone or iPod Touch itself.

I had found other hacks out there that did something similar, but they require you to SSH into your device, modify a file using a hex editor, and pray that it will actually work. This, however, is a quick 10-second solution (assuming you’ve already jailbroken your device). I’m currently using it on the 3.1.2 firmware, and it works flawlessly. It’s little things like this that make me happy I’ve jailbroken my device.

Sony Halts The Sales Of Some Digital Cameras

This article was written on December 20, 2005 by CyberNet.

Sony DSC-H1 Digital Camera

The Sony DSC-H1, DSC-L1, DSC-P200, DSC-W7, DSC-W5 and DSC-S90 digital cameras will no longer be in production because they did not pass the quality test. I guess Sony needs to make sure they check the quality of the products before they actually release them.

The official Xinhua news agency reported that the Sony cameras were found to have image quality and exposure problems by the Zhejiang Administration for Industry & Commerce.

The local administration said Sony’s DSC-H1, DSC-L1, DSC-P200, DSC-W7, DSC-W5 and DSC-S90 digital camera models were ordered to be suspended from the market.

The cameras are made by two manufacturers: a joint venture of Sony and SVA Info, and Sony Electronic (Wuxi) Ltd.
