Get 15 Free Blu-Ray Movies with PS3 Purchase at Wal-Mart?

This article was written on November 19, 2007 by CyberNet.

blu-ray logo This rumor by no means has been confirmed, but we’re telling you about it so that you can keep your eye out for it. If it’s true, it’s an awesome deal. Rumor has it that starting on November 24th at 8 AM and running through November 25th at 11:59 PM, Wal-Mart is having another “secret” sale. They’ll be selling the 80GB PS3 system for $499 (its usual price) but buyers will be able to choose 10 Blu-Ray titles under $30 for free. Add those 10 to the 5 you already get by mail through Sony’s program, and you’ll have 15 Blu-ray movies worth over $400.

The user who reported this deal at Blu-ray.com says he works at a Wal-Mart in the electronics department which leads me to believe he does actually know what he’s talking about . He said stores were just notified on Saturday and that a link for it won’t be available until about Wednesday. According to what he knows, Wal-Mart is stocking up big for this! He says “For those stores that carry BD already, additional titles are being sent in for the sale.  For those that do not have BD in their store (a small minority), product will be sent to each store specifically for this sale.

Here we thought Wal-Mart was supporting the HD DVD camp after they sold that Toshiba player for under 100 bucks! Turns out they’re not taking sides, and they’re supporting both pretty equally. Anybody considering buying a Playstation 3 to get 15 free movies if this rumor turns out to be true?

CyberNotes: Blogmusik.net – Free Internet Virtual iPod

This article was written on September 15, 2006 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Free For All Friday

Blogmusik.net

When I think of Blogmusik.net, I can’t help but think of the original Napster. You know, back in the day when Napster was the free peer to peer music sharing service that loads of people used? The good old days of Napster didn’t last too long, and I imagine Blogmusik.net won’t either.  It is cool nonetheless and worth checking out.

They use an iPod like interface acting as your own personal jukebox to stream your selected songs over the Internet.  It has a search feature with a rather large variety of songs to choose from.  When you become a registered user, you’re able to save playlists with all of your favorites ready to go for the next time you’re wanting to listen to music. They even have some of those “one track wonders” you never thought you’d find or hear again!

The virtual iPod interface really couldn’t be any easier to use, and as for the quality of sound,  it’s decent.  Not great, but decent. Oh, and you can change the color of your “iPod” from black to white.  The idea is kinda cool, however as mentioned, the legal status remains unknown which gives a good indication that it may not be around for long!

Alright, so that’s the free route you can take for now.  There are alternative options that are legal and have similar features such as allowing you to save a playlist. One such option is brought to you by the ”new” (no longer free) Napster.  According to their website:

”As a registered member of Napster’s free music service you can listen to all 2,000,000 songs in the Napster catalog up to 3 times each. After the 3rd free play, you must purchase the track to listen to it again. As a Napster subscriber, you can listen to the same song an unlimited amount of times without having to worry about any limits. You can also download your favorite music to your PC and listen to it when you are not connected to the Internet.”

To recap: Blogmusik.net is a pretty cool free service with the virtual iPod interface but probably won’t be around for long! Once/if they’re shut down, a good alternative paying option for $15.00 per month would be Napster.

Amazon’s DRM-Free Music Store Gets Rave Reviews

This article was written on September 26, 2007 by CyberNet.

amazonmp3

It’s been about a day since Amazon launched the Public Beta of their DRM-Free Music store called Amazon MP3, and so far the reviews are extremely positive and users are happy with the ease of use, and the prices. Their slogan is “Play Anywhere, DRM-Free Music Downloads” but they should have added “for cheap” on to it. Prices for these DRM-free songs range from 89 cents to a maximum of 99 cents while iTunes charges $1.29 for their DRM-free music.  Most full albums range in price from $5.99 to $9.99, although there are some sold for $4.99 and under. Amazon may have actually caused Steve Jobs to get a bit concerned because now iTunes has a real competitor! A little healthy competition for Apple may actually be good.

DRM-Free means that once you download a song or album, you can play them on multiple devices like your computer (PC or Mac), your iPod, Zune, iPhone, BlackBerry, and the list goes on. Amazon’s library includes over 2 million songs by 180,000 artists with 20,000 major and independent labels. On the downside, while this may sound like a lot of songs, it’s really not. Most big name labels aren’t a part of this like Sony, and given that content is king, they’ll need more music.  If Amazon were able to ink a deal with some of the other companies, this would be huge.

When you click on a song or album, you’ll be able to preview the music (30 second clip) before buying. On the same page, you’ll also be able to rate the song, read customer reviews, leave feedback about the service, or view your recent history which shows your recently viewed products and recent searches. And of course there are advertisements and other product offers from Amazon. Below is an image of what the Amazon MP3 downloader looks like:

amazonmp32

While I worked my way around the web today getting reactions from people, I saw comments like “the experience is fantastic!” or “Wow, this is amazing.” Their MP3 Downloader allows you to easily add the music you’ve downloaded to iTunes and Windows Media Player which leaves me wondering if iTunes will be able to remain the top digital music store for long?

This article was written on December 13, 2008 by CyberNet.

When Ryan and I originally planned out the schedule for this Giveaway, we thought we’d have no problem announcing the winners on the site by Friday at 8:00 PM Central Time. We thought wrong! There were over 80 people to notify via email that they won, before announcing the winners on the site. To the winners: Those of you who won Anvar, Button Shop, Edraw Max, and Daniusoft Media Converter, you should have received a second email with your license keys this morning. For the rest of the winners, we are waiting on the software companies to get keys to us. We appreciate your patience! If you won and have not received an email, please check your spam folder before contacting us. There were some people who won twice, although no one won three times.

Over $3,500 in software was given away and there were over 850 entries. Before we post winners, we want to send a HUGE thanks to the companies who provided licenses for:

The HBR List 2009

HBR%20list%202009.bmp

Harvard Business Publishing: The annual Harvard Business Review’s breakthrough business ideas is now out. This year, the list includes trends ranging from Africa to the economy, from Western Union to state capitalism, and from biomimicry to something called the IKEA Effect…

HBR has also gone further to anticipate the context in which we would now read them. Thus some of the articles comment directly on the economic crisis, but most of them address other matters that business leaders must contend with: strategic decision making, tapping new markets, finding and keeping top talent, harnessing network effects, dealing with disruptive technologies and business models.

A hihgly recommended read to gain insights into the latest trends and ideas evolving in the business world.

Netflix Shipping System is Having Issues

This article was written on August 15, 2008 by CyberNet.

Over the last couple of days we have been monitoring a situation with Netflix regarding the problems they have been having with their shipment system. When we first heard about it, we didn’t think it was that big of a deal, but now that it’s been a couple of days and Netflix is still having issues, we figured it was worth mentioning. Webware is calling this “the worst system failure in the DVD shipper’s history.” Not good.

No one really knows exactly what the issue is other than it’s technical, but this is going to turn out to be a big loss for Netflix. They ship about 2 million DVDs each day and with no DVDs shipping on Tuesday, only a few shipping Wednesday, and few shipped yesterday, they’re going to have to refund their subscribers money to compensate for this outage.

Users who should have been receiving DVDs received this message:

Update: ABC News Reports that the problems with Netflix have been resolved and shipping resumes today.

Improv Everywhere does a Human Mirror

This article was written on July 15, 2008 by CyberNet.

The Improv Everywhere group comes up with some really unique things to do. You might recall that earlier in the year they “froze” themselves in Grand Central Station located in New York. I’m still now sure how they managed to attract all of the participants, but in the end it definitely turned some heads.

They are at it again, but this time they are in a subway car. They took several groups of twins and had them all sit across from each other. The key is that they were wearing matching clothes, accessories, and mimicked each other’s actions. Thus creating a human mirror. As the video demonstrates it was hard for people not to wonder what the heck was going on:

I can’t wait to see what the Improv Everywhere group comes up with next. I’m sure it will be great no matter what they come up with.

Thanks Omar!

Is Dell Getting Closer To Selling Macs?

Michael Dell has talked about carrying Macs before, but is this some kind of hint? Engadget reports that the Dell Drivers Site now has Apple Mac OS drivers listed. They are also careful to point out that the files attached to the Apple Mac OS don’t appear to be Mac drivers. They believe that listing the Apple Mac OS was just an accident by Dell, but that is a pretty big oops!
