Xbox 360 with 250GB HDD and Forza 3 spotted on Amazon Germany

Now that the Xbox 360 Elite has officially dropped in price and killed off the Pro, it was only a matter of time before there’d be a new rumor to pin on Microsoft’s console. Amazon Germany, who previously listed the PlayStation 3 Slim a good 20 days before the official debut (it still has the same Amazon Stock Identification Number as it did when leaked), has gone ahead and posted a new Xbox 360 model, ASIN in tow, with a 250GB HDD, two wireless controllers, and Forza Motorsport 3. Price is listed at 279 euros ($397), a good 30 euros over the current Elite price. No release date, but Forza 3 isn’t due out until at least October 23rd so we’d say you got awhile to wait and see if this pans out. Any chance we can get a built-in WiFi adapter along with that extra storage space?

[Thanks, skipper]

Biergert & Funk QLOCKTWO gets an English version, our sincerest admiration

This is exactly what we need: a clock that politely dispenses with the math (no matter how simple) in favor of words. Biergert & Funk handmake this one, called the QLOCKTWO, with both German and English language faces — and there lots of color options. The price is a stunningly uncheap €1099 (about $1600), so get to saving your dollars and cents. There’s a video showing off the QLOCKTWO after the break, but you’d better speak German — or do what we did, and mute it and listen to AC / DC while you watch it.

Sony announces PS3 firmware 3.0, European PlayStation Video Store, Digital Reader comics viewer

Sony just announced a bunch of tweaks and additions to the PS3, PSP, and PlayStation Network at GamesCom, chief among them the new PS3 firmware 3.0. The new code features animated themes with avatars, a new status indicator, a modified friends list, assorted interface changes, tweaks to trophies, and a What’s New section that replaces the Information Board. Sony’s also bringing the PlayStation Video store to the UK, France, Germany and Spain in November, with more planned expansion in 2010 — customers will be able to rent and buy films in SD and HD, and while it’ll open with just movies, other content will be added as time goes on. The PSP is also getting a Digital Reader comics viewer, with lots of heavy hitters like Marvel on board to provide content — Marvel says the PSP could become their biggest distribution outlet. We’ll see about that — for now, check a video of firmware 3.0 after the break.

Update: Digital Reader press release after the break.

Gold, diamond-leafed Gaiser PCs might just bring Marie Antoinette back from the grave

Don’t get us wrong — we’re all in favor of purposeless, ostentatious, and classless displays of wealth — but we prefer it to be a little less… tacky? German manufacturer High End PCs have the high end part down pat — they’ll dip your desktop in all manners of gold (up to 24 karat!), cubic zirconia and of course, diamonds. Now, we don’t have any specs on these puppies — though we suspect performance is beside the point. Our only real qualm with the product is that it looks like a Kleenex box from Don Johnson’s bathroom in 1986. But, if you have a stack of money hanging around and you just can’t be bothered to think of really awesome things to do with it, Gaiser’s PCs start from about $8,000 and run up to around $33,000.

Fraunhofer Institute’s fruit checker device tracks optimum ripeness so you can stop sniffing those melons

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute have developed a small device that can be used to check the freshness of fruit, telling the interested parties whether it’s ripe or not. Based on previous technologies which measure, for example car emissions, the device measures the volatile gases emitted by the fruit and analyzes its makeup to determine the state of freshness. The team already has a working prototype, and sees the device, which would cost somewhere in the thousands of dollars range, as having widespread application for businesses that supply food to grocery stores. So far the device has only successfully been used to test the freshness of fruit, but researchers see possible future applications in testing meat as well.

Video: life-altering 3D projection gets splashed on German building

It’s not often that we take time to highlight the creativity and innovation involved in an artistic projection, but this one excited a few too many nerve endings to pass up. The latest in a long line of fantastical wall splashings comes to us courtesy of Urbanscreen, who has designed a downright mesmerizing 3D projection to “dissolve and break through the strict architecture of O.M. Ungers’ Galerie der Gegenwart. The project is entitled “How it would be, if a house was dreaming,” and it’s without a doubt one of the most amazing spectacles you’ll see in the next six to ten minutes. Hop on past the break to have your skepticism put to rest, your world view changed forever and your hope in humanity temporarily restored.

Toshiba’s potent TG01 back on sale through O2 Germany

Well, that was snappy. Just days after O2 Germany abruptly halted the sales of Toshiba’s 1GHz TG01 smartphone due to an unexplained virus outbreak among new units, it seems as if things are back in gear. Online, anyway. As of this moment, web shoppers can order the Snapdragon / WinMo-powered from the carrier once more, though there’s no word on if retail shops are still keeping their stock in quarantine. Either way, we’d don a mask before waltzing in to inquire.

[Thanks, Fab]

O2 Germany’s TG01 handset, now with virus!

It’s bad enough picking up a virus because you’ve made an uncharacteristic (to you at least) illegal software acquisition, but bringing one home when you’re just minding your own business, trying to enjoy your legitimate and hard-earned purchase, is totally uncool. Case in point: according to Inside-Handy.de, a few unlucky customers of O2 in Germany have purchased the TG01 handset only to discover a virus present on the device. While Toshiba tries to determine the impact and the cause of the infection, O2 has halted sales of the smartphone, though there’s no word on when sales will resume nor if this infection has spread to other European nations.

T-Mobile’s G2 Touch (HTC Hero) hitting Germany in August, not July

It’s the same HTC Hero you already crave only now with a touch of colorful Hypo-magenta-semia that always results in a name change. The result? T-Mobile G2 Touch now scheduled for an August launch date, not July as originally announced. We imagine this will push the UK launch back as well what with T-Mobile HQ’d in Germany. Missed launch date or not, we’ve been ready to take on extra debt, sell the ferrets, whatever it takes just to take home that Sense UI and excellent on-screen keyboard riding Android 1.5 since like, yesterday.

[Thanks, Vaios]

Update: T-Mobile UK has stated via Twitter that the G2 Touch ship date will be released “ASAP.” Thanks, Chris!

Samsung Galaxy GT-I7500 unboxed, “Google Experience” distinction now clear as mud

The HTC Hero and T-Mobile myTouch 3G aren’t the only Android phones making waves this week: the Samsung Galaxy GT-I7500 also launched on O2 Germany, and this is the first unboxing we’ve seen. Continuing the confusion over what handsets actually get the full Google blessing, this version of the I7500 runs pretty much bone-stock Android, but isn’t a “Google Experience” phone, which in this case apparently means that firmware updates have to be loaded manually over USB instead of being pushed over the air. If you’re keeping track, that’s now a third axis of differentiation between Google-branded Android handsets and everything else, and we’re starting to think no one really knows what all the rules and differences actually are — hey, Eric, maybe you could set down that BlackBerry for a minute and sort all this out?
