New Poll: What Do You Think of Google Chrome?

This article was written on October 31, 2008 by CyberNet.

Now that Google Chrome has been available for about two months, we thought we’d take the opportunity to poll CyberNet readers to see what they think of it. For those who may not yet know what Google Chrome is all about, it’s Google’s free web browser that launched into beta in early September. We originally asked what you thought of it a day after it launched and got mixed opinions. Now that you’ve had some more time to get yourselves familiar with it, we thought we’d revisit the question in the form of a poll.

New Poll – What do you think of Google Chrome?

  • I haven’t tried it
  • I like it but decided not to make it my primary browser
  • I love it and made it my primary browser
  • I’m undecided and need more time to determine if I will use it
  • I tried it but don’t like it

Previous Poll Wrap-Up

In our previous poll, we asked, “Do you use the default Firefox Theme?” The clear choice among the majority of CyberNet readers (58%) is the default Firefox theme. About 38% of you said that you used a custom Firefox theme while 8% of you (yes, just 8%), said you weren’t even using Firefox.

Nielsen: Android accounts for 39 percent of smartphones in the US, Apple is the top device maker

Nielsen’s just released a study confirming what some other studies have already concluded — that Android devices account for the single largest swath of smartphone users in the US, with 39 percent OS share as of the second quarter. That compares with 28 percent for iOS, although Apple still reigns as the country’s top-selling device maker. Simply put, that’s a reflection of the fact that Apple is the only outfit churning out iOS devices, whereas a bevy of companies led by HTC, Motorola, and Samsung have helped make Android the dominant OS in the states. And let’s not forget about RIM, another hardware / software shop, which still commands a 20 percent chunk of the market. Rounding out the list, Windows Phone and Windows Mobile account for nine percent, largely thanks to sales of HTC handsets, while webOS and Symbian each eked out two percent. At this point we don’t doubt that Android is the most ubiquitous mobile operating system this side of the Atlantic, although it’s worth noting that Nielsen based its results on a sample of roughly 20,000 people — all of whom are postpaid subscribers.

Logitech CEO steps down after money losing Q1, Revue price slashed to $99

This is becoming a trend. After a disappointing Q4 saw Logitech reduce the price of its Revue it revealed today that after a net loss of $29.6 million for the first quarter it is cutting the price of the Revue to $99, as well as saying goodbye to CEO Gerald P. Quindlen. Quindlen had been an outspoken supporter of the Google TV box (see the video after the break) but according to Logitech this price cut and corresponding $34 million hit to its finances are necessary to “remove price as a barrier to broad customer acceptance.” In the midst of these results — as well as lowered sales in several regions and key products like Harmony remotes — Chairman and former CEO Guerrino De Luca will assume the role of acting CEO while a long term replacement is sought. Until then, and before the Google TV Honeycomb update arrives, does anyone think the Revue will be more appealing for one Benjamin than it was for two, or three?

Google Fiber puts boots on the ground, begins detail engineering in Kansas Cities

We’ve come a long way since Google first started taking about launching a fiber-based ISP — from beta tests, to hopeful communities, to Topeka fools day, to selecting not one, but two Kansas Cities. Now, it’s “boots on the ground,” time according to the Google Fiber blog: detail engineering starts now. In the coming weeks, Kansas City residents (presumably on both sides of the Kansas / Missouri border) can expect to see El Goog’s engineers measuring phone poles, gathering geographical data, and asking hard-hitting questions, like “What is your address?” All this footwork will help Google get a head start on building that sweet, ultra-high-speed gigabit network. Not the most glamorous bit of Google magic we’ve ever seen, but it’s still exciting to hear that preliminary work has begun. Of course, it would be even more exciting if this were coming where we lived.

CyberWare: Firefox Extension To Manage Multiple GMail Accounts

This article was written on August 14, 2006 by CyberNet.

CyberNet's CyberWare
Tracking Down Great Software For You!

GMail Manager Firefox Extension Most of the people that I know don’t have just one GMail account because we need one for friends, family, spam, subscriptions, orders, and I am sure the list continues on and on, right? I actually have 8 different GMail accounts along with the multiple email addresses that we have Google for hosting the CyberNet News email. It would be extremely tedious to check all of those email addresses by logging in and logging out manually, but the GMail Manager Firefox extension does all of the work for you.

Several of you have probably already heard about it but the newest version that was just released a few weeks ago has some great features. For starters, it now supports the GMail hosted accounts which means it can check your Website’s emails as well. You’ll also find that it is easy to put all of your accounts on more than one computer with the nifty import/export setting that was added.

Now I would be all set if there was a way to organize the list of accounts. I think I can live without that feature since it saves me so much time!

HTC Wildfire S swaggers CDMA bands at FCC

True to its namesake, the Wildfire S is preparing to blaze across our native prairies without abandon. After gaining the FCC’s nod of acceptance for use on our 1900 / 850MHz HSPA bands — followed by T-Mobile’s official announcement — the fun-sized candybar has received FCC approval for igniting our CDMA networks. A leaked roadmap suggests the Gingerbread treat is destined for US Cellular in October, but don’t be surprised if the little guy appears at Cricket, MetroPCS, Virgin Mobile, and the like. Even Verizon could benefit from the Wildfire S, seeing that the Motorola Citrus is downright sour. Just promise not to name it the Droid Burn, okay?

Vodafone axes EVO 3D before it even hits shelves

HTC EVO 3D

Keen-eyed observers, or those who registered to be notified about the EVO 3D, may have noticed a sudden dearth of glasses-free 3D phones coming to Vodafone. Apparently, the British carrier’s execs are not the patient type. After several delays, Vodafone has decided to simply ax the handset rather than wait out HTC’s supply issues, and has removed it from the company’s “Coming Soon” page. Lets just hope its customers are a bit more understanding — especially those who signed up to get first-crack at the now canceled phone.

Xperia X10 gets Gingerbread update, gratuitous cookie pictures ensue

Xperia X10 gets Gingerbread update, gratuitous cookie pictures ensue

Since they’re free of preservatives, Android updates tend to get pretty stale pretty quickly. As such, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 has definitely lost its best flavor, but here comes a refresh. The long-promised 2.3.3 Gingerbread update is now available, but only if you’re pocketing a carrier-free phone. To apply the update — which also includes WiFi and USB tethering, improved Facebook integration, and some fancy new widgets — you’ll need a USB cable and the company’s PC software, meaning this one is far from OTA. When will a cable-free update come along? SE regrets to inform that it “cannot give you an exact date for when the update will be available for you.” What’s another few weeks… or months?

Update: Mike wrote in to let us know that Sony Ericsson is backing off again, now saying that information about the X10 update “was a bit too premature.” Shocking, we know.
