Dell Streak gets SNES controller dock, navigates owner through Yoshi's Island (video)

Who’d have thought that a little thing like the inclusion of USB Host capabilities could open the door to such wonders as an SNES controller dock? That’s exactly what we have here. The Dell Streak‘s ability to work with standard USB keyboards has enabled it to also work with a suitably modified SNES controller, having had a cablectomy and the addition of a PDMI connector on top. That, with the addition of a USB board, turns the controller into a keyboard and, hey presto, it’s Super Mario World time. Modder 0TheRain0 did the handiwork here, which you can watch him demonstrate after the break.

DIY Ripstik underbody LED kit will make you look styley at night, still get heckled by skaters

DIY Ripstick under body kit will make you look styley at night, still get heckled by skaters

The age of the underbody lighting craze on cars passed about as quickly as a bottle of N2O lasts on bracket night at the local strip, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still have some fun on your man-powered means of transportation. No, we’re not talking a skateboard here, it’s a Ripstik, featuring two narrow inline skate wheels and a weaving motion that will get you going where you’re going without kicking — so long as you aren’t in a great hurry. Now modder metsfan1938 over at instructables is showing us how to add a little underbody bling, wiring up blue LEDs that are as practical as they are stylish if you tend to ride in an area that could see you getting run over at night. A little soldering and a bit of Dremel action is all that’s required here, so if you live your life a wobbly quarter-mile at a time you’ll want to click on through.

‘Liberate’ for the Zune HD unlocks hidden Windows CE potential

Sure, we just spent the last four or five years chiding Microsoft for its anachronistic Windows CE interface, a UI which was holding Windows Mobile back in a post-stylus world, but now that Windows Phone 7 is here we get to start feeling all nostalgic, right? The ongoing Liberate project for the Zune HD, which just hit version 1.5.1, strips away that flashy Zune veneer and boots the device to Microsoft’s stock CE 6.0 copy of explorer.exe. Notably, the latest version adds an onscreen keyboard and better right click support. Folks are using the freedom of CE to run applications like Foxit Reader, Opera Mini and Pocket Word, and with support for GDI, DirectDraw, and OpenGL ES 2.0 there’s hope of gaming ports as well.

[Thanks, David R.]

Nokia Z500 MeeGo tablet leaked on Ovi Store?

A Nokia tablet running MeeGo has been churning through the rumor mills since early summer. Speculation, however, began as soon as Nokia and Intel joined forces on the open source OS back in February. Eldar Murtazin, the ultimate Nokia insider, was first to give the Nokia tablet a name: Z500. Fast forward to yesterday, when reports first surfaced of people successfully replacing valid handset names in the store’s URL with “Z500.” Instead of being rejected as an unsupported device, the store seemingly accepted the Z500 device name as you can see in the screenshot above (the Ovi store now rejects the modified terminal ID string). Eldar had this to say on Twitter in response:

Rumour mill. As far as I know Nokia Z500 (Nokia Meego tablet) is under question. Nokia arent happy with price/features.

So now we have a name and with any luck, we’ll see a MeeGo-based Nokia tablet sometime in 2011 as followup to its Windows-based Booklet. If not, then we’ll always have the WeTab.

Interactive fiction meets interactive typewriter, pilfers the kingdoms of Zork (video)

You are standing in an open field as usual, or perhaps you’re in the darkness, likely to be eaten by a grue, but the words aren’t etching their way into your soul from the familiar computer terminal — they’re on freshly printed paper. Like a player piano, the Automatypewriter lets you play games like Zork by automatically keying in letters via a series of solenoids and fishing line to tell you where you are, and it records your input, too; every time you type “XYZZY” in vain, it’s an Arduino board that sends signals to the text parser, which directs a hollow voice to pity your foolish word. Forget the iPad typewriterthis is old-school. See it in action after the break, or hit the source link for the schematics to build one yourself. Just be sure to install Planetfall, too.

LED pumpkin would be perfect for your next Sleepy Hollow dance party (video)

We can’t all have heads as amazing as Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, but this holiday season we can have pumpkins that are every bit as blinky. Mike Szczys has posted a detailed walkthrough of how to create the above Jack-o-creation at Hack a Day, which features a 5 x 14 matrix of LEDs on the front that can be programmed to light up in various ways, like the Knight Rider sweep or to simply scroll the message “HAPPY HALLOWEEN.” That’s shown in the video below, but hopefully version 2.0 can manage the tricks displayed in the second embed that’s also waiting for you after the break.

Matt Richardson MacGuyvers a Google Reader pedal out of just these items, zero duct tape (video)

Matt Richardson MacGuyvers a Google Reader pedal out of just these items, zero duct tape (video)

The definition of a good friend is someone who, if you say to them “Gee, I’d really like a foot pedal to advance my overflowing Google Reader feeds,” turns around and builds you one. From scratch. In this way we know that modder Matt Richardson is a good friend, as that’s what he crafted out of a little electric pedal and a disused keyboard (of the Dell variety). It’s not the most complex hack we’ve ever seen, but it is a good one, and he’s happy to show you exactly how to do it in the video below. Oh, and the friend’s response? You can see it for yourself at the end of the embed.

Sony Google TV booted into recovery mode, are we days away from a root? (video)

Sony Google TV booted into recovery mode, are we days away from a root? (video)

If it’s running Android it has a root, and if it has a root some modder will find it. The Sony Google TV is most certainly running a flavor of Google’s little OS and so it too is just waiting to be cracked open. While that hasn’t happened yet, Android Forums and xda-developers member Apeman has managed to get us one step closer. He’s enabled the recovery mode on his device by holding the power button down while plugging it in, presenting a tantalizing “System Update with USB” menu option. What lovely things will this unlock? You’ll have to wait to see — just like us.
