Apple TV hacked to run weather app

Well, that didn’t take long. Greenpois0n jailbroke the new Apple TV just yesterday, and PwnageTool 4.1 this afternoon, and we’ve already got what appears to be the first custom software successfully running on the device. As you can see, it’s a simple weather app, designed by a tiny software firm called nitoTV, but it’s a harbinger of things to come when developers get cracking on the Apple TV in earnest. See a picture of nitoTV’s custom launcher after the break, while your subconscious frantically tries to figure out what the four cities in the above pic could possibly have in common.

T-Mobile G2 overclocked to 1.4GHz, starts blitzing benchmarks (video)

Well now, that didn’t take very long. T-Mobile’s G2 (aka the HTC Vision) has been let off its leash, and there’s no getting it back now. XDA-developers member coolbho3000 has posted his overclock module, which takes an already fast phone and make it considerably more perky. He started at a modest 1GHz, but kept on pushing up to 1.42GHz — though there’s potential to go even higher. All this despite T-Mobile’s attempts at preventing hacking, but certainly seeming to allow allow for a fair bit of tweaking. Apple TV jailbroken again with Greenpois0n, lets Shatter off the hook

The iOS dev community already shattered the new Apple TV, but now it’s been poisoned, too. What does this mean for you? It means that there’s still a chance your $99 set top box might be jailbroken to run apps, even though Shatter is gone. Now we’ll just have to wait and see if someone figures the hard part out, and gets some apps installed. Those Angry Birds don’t fling themselves, you know.

Sometimes a mod is more than just a mod: it’s a manifesto. When Phawx over at BrainLazy decided to take an X-Acto knife to his Epic 4G’s keypad, he knew what he was doing: both challenging Apple’s place in the world of cellphone-based gaming and encouraging other manufacturers to step up to the plate. Although early on in the design process he mocked up some plastic controller pieces to replace the factory keypad altogether, by the time it came to try the thing out he realized that by simply pulling out the unused keys and making a few minor (very minor) cosmetic adjustments he could give his touchscreen handset a gamepad slider more eminently more playable than your Droid’s Game Gripper — and eminently less mythical than your PSP Phone. When society collapses and the national energy infrastructure goes to pot, at least you’ll still be able to run your fantastical Lego Mindstorms NXT creations. That’s right: the fine folks at Dexter Industries are offering panels, batteries, and all the geegaws necessary to power your projects the old fashioned way: with the sun. The basic dSolar 2W System ($90) features a 9 volt solar panel with enough juice to power the NXt and a single motor in direct sunlight (about 250 mA). There is also a four watt system available for $100, as well as capacitor banks, parallel connectors for multiple panels, and more. Limera1n and Greenpois0n iOS 4.1 jailbreaks now available for Mac, Linux

We thought it was a wee bit ridiculous that Geohot’s original iOS 4.1 jailbreak only worked on Windows, but that’s a thing of the past now — limera1n now supports Mac as well, and the Chronic Dev Team’s greenpois0n variant can purportedly free your device from the Apple shackles of any of OS X, Linux or Windows. Mind you, there’s still no working carrier unlock for iOS 4.1, so be sure to back up your baseband and don’t expect to be making calls on T-Mobile USA — and remember kids, there are always risks to playing chicken with the Apple firmware train.

ArcadeDock converts Lenovo laptop into retro gaming machine (video)

Dean Liou, the same fellow responsible for the ToiletPC and LovePC, has just concocted what’s likely his most splendorous mod yet. The ArcadeDock Laptop Dock is a half-height arcade machine, complete with a flame job from a dark corner of 1994, a full-on joystick + large button splay and a secret cabinet for a touchpad-equipped keyboard. Put simply, this rig is designed to hold an IdeaPad Y560, and when plugged in and connected via USB, the controls you’re peering at above function exactly as you’d expect them to. Toss on a couple of your favorite ROMs (Street Fighter II, anyone?), grab a Go-Gurt and settle in — a demonstrative video is after the break, and feel free to tap that Lenovo link below if you’d like to vote this mod up above the competition.

Ah, the Rumble Pak. It was arguably the must-have accessory for the Nintendo 64, and had it been around during the time of R.B.I. Baseball, we’re certain it would’ve went over well. One Andy Goetz decided that he’d be interested in reshaping history a bit, and spent 20-some-odd hours building a rumble device for his NES controller as a deadline loomed. He ended up submitting it in Oregon State University’s Engineering Expo, and while it seems that they can’t actually control when the rumble happens, at least your youngster will likely believe that he / she is doing something right while they’re being humiliated by CPU racers in Excitebike. Cruel? Maybe. But totally practical.

As always in the world of handmade portable consoles, the word “slim” is a very, very relative term. Appropriately you wouldn’t call Ben Heck‘s latest creation svelte by any means, but it is considerably smaller than his 2009 version, 1.5-inches skinnier and an inch shorter. Despite that it now has an internal power supply and is even quieter than before. The system’s touch power and eject buttons work as expected here, and up top is a 17-inch Gateway LCD that manages a full 720p’s worth of pixels. Want one? The model pictured above is being given away as part of a contest on The Ben Heck Show, but he’s making two others that are available to, you know, purchase if you have the means.

DIY casemod features fins, automatically vents your rig

Truly epic casemods grace the humble pages of Engadget from time to time, but here’s a spoonful of liquid awesome you might actually be able to try. Using an off-the-shelf fan controller, servo motor and Arduino board, plus some water-cut styrene parts he farmed out to an online shop, user SXRguyinMA outfitted his NZXT Tempest Evo case with a rad robotic cooling system. When the Arduino detects the temperature changing, it automatically actuates the servo to raise or lower the louvers accordingly, and the rig features a pair of supercapacitors that can store enough power to close the vents even if power is lost. There’s also the all-important little red button to instantly make jaws drop. Video after the break, full worklog at our more coverage link.
