SNES / Sega Genesis USB cartridge adapter now available for pre-order

Looks like our old friend, Matthias — the developer of the USB SNES cart reader — is back on the scene, and this time he’s going commercial. His newest project, Snega2USB, adds Sega Genesis, read and write for battery-backed SNES games, open source firmware, and up to four gamepads to the homebrew fave of classic gaming fanatics world o’er. This is a work-in-progress, but all the pieces are in place to have all orders met on the December, 2009 street date. Pre-orders will be taken until October 31 for $90 in the United States or €75 in Europe. Video after the break.

Homemade pink Xbox 360 controller makes the ladies say ‘heyyy!’

Not that we haven’t seen pink Xbox 360 controllers before (including one from Microsoft itself), but this one just oozes class. Constructed by Flickr user 4apples for the lovely lady (ladies?) in his life, he took all the time one would expect a handsome young bloke to take by dissembling it, painting each piece in varying shades of pink and slapping it all back together. Have a look at the read link for the finished project, and naw, we won’t tell your special someone if you decide to follow suit and call it an original.

LG GD900 Crystal makes a very portable fish tank, PETA magnet

Remember the good old days with your virtual pets on your keyring? Well, how about an injection of life that actually roams around inside your phone? Some dude in China had this exact idea — probably inspired by the waterproof LG GD900 Crystal in a fish tank — and popped open the hollow keypad of his own Crystal, slapped in two unfortunate little neon tetras, squeezed in some water and snap! There’s no mention on how long the poor things can survive in there for, but chances are PETA will be after your backside well before something goes wrong. We also went through the warranty paperwork, and honestly, we think this gentleman might be in a fishy area here. Video of the mod after the break, if you dare.

How-to guide details PS/2 keyboard-to-iPhone mod, just for you

Oh sure, we’ve seen hacker after hacker brag about their success in connecting some sort of keyboard to Apple’s iPhone, but have any of them bothered to take the time to explain the process behind the magic? Exactly. The man behind AwghBlog, however, is a kinder, gentler soul, and he’s found the time to detail in quite specific terms how he connected a legacy PS/2 keyboard (you know, the one you’re not using any longer) to Apple’s cash-cow of a smartphone. Best of all, the guide actually explains how to build a PS/2 keyboard-to-iPhone converter, so you’re not necessarily tied to a certain board. Hit the read link if you’re down for a weekend project.

Jailbroken iPhone gets Expose-like view, you retail users just keep on scrollin’ (video)

Jailbroken iPhone gets Expose-like view, you retail users just keep on scrollin' (video)

How many apps do you have on your iPhone? Yeah, we figured it was a lot. Being able to re-arrange items now is mighty helpful, but not so helpful as this little hack from Steve Troughton-Smith that adds Exposé-like functionality to the mix. Just press the Home button and up pops a view of all the application pages; tap one and you’re taken straight there, as shown in the video after the break. Nice and simple — and at this point not available even to jailbroken handsets. We’re sure that’ll change soon, but it’s anybody’s guess if or when Apple will add something like this to the official OS. Yet another reason to go ahead and roll your own.

Dell Mini 9 modded into an internet tablet

MyDellMini forum member Rob928, take a bow. This honorable gentleman has only gone and transformed an aging 9-inch netbook into a new-fashioned internet tablet. it might still be a chubby little thing, but there’s no denying the usefulness of using the entire screen to navigate instead of the usually cramped netbook touchpad. With a 16GB SSD upgrade alongside the venerable Atom N270 and 1GB of RAM, this device will even boot faster into Windows than your run-of-the-mill netbook. The read link will reveal all, including more shots of the hardware laid bare.

World’s cutest pint-sized living room sets up shop in a PC case

If we were miniature people forced to scrape by an existence of hiding from The Bigs and wearing adorable hats made out of thimbles, we’d be totally eyeing this little abode for our winter digs. Warming our tiny, oh-so-precious hands at the warmth of the CPU, cradling our hot chocolate mugs that are really hollowed out marshmallows and telling stories of when little Timmy Tinykins almost got sucked out the power supply exhaust fan! Oh, what magical times we would have.

[Thanks, CJ Johnson]

ProtoDojo turns NES controller into flash drive with Konami-level security

The humble NES controller has certainly provided plenty of inspiration for mods over the years, and even a little dreaming, but it doesn’t look like the well is showing any signs of drying up just yet. The latest to take a crack at the iconic gadget is one man shop ProtoDojo, which did what many others have done and turned the controller into a flash drive, but went the extra step of adding an ingenious security measure to ensure that only true NES veterans are able to mount the drive. We won’t spell it out here, but let’s just say this drive stands a better chance at Contra than most — all possible thanks to the magic of Arduino, as you might have guessed. Head on past the break for a complete overview on video.

MOTOBLUR ported to the G1, unreleased CLIQ looks on in envy

It’s unclear exactly how MOTOBLUR software might’ve leaked into the wild, but it’s already been repurposed in the best sort of way into a G1-friendly ROM. Despite its beta status it’s looking relatively snappy, but there are still some missing elements like WiFi and Bluetooth. If anything it’s a testament to how portable and hackable Android is turning out to be so far, and we look forward to the ongoing improvements to Android by diverse manufacturers being disseminated far and wide — though if Motorola had its way, it’d probably at least happen after the relevant device has hit the market. Video is after the break.

Celebrity Nerds: Lil’ Wayne’s got a modded Xbox

Celebrity Nerds confirms what you always knew, deep in your heart of hearts: that stars are nerds like us. Send in your own confirmations of this fact right here.

Now, we don’t have photographic evidence of this one, so Wayne, if you happen to be a reader, feel free to snap a pic of yourself with the console. Either way, we have enough proof to proudly classify Lil’ Wayne a… you know, nerd. GTR has published a video of the New Orleans-born rapper having a conversation with KRS-One during which he says he’s got an “Xbox that has every game from A-Z, Atari, Nintendo, pong, movies & even porn.” Whoa. Where can we get one of those? Wayne claims that the Xbox was a gift… but we bet he hacked it himself. Video is embedded after the break.
