This isn’t the first Dreamcast mod we’ve seen around here, not by a long shot — but it’s surely one of the most elegant. Built around a 15-inch LCD, this guy is a scant 2 1/4-inches thick, but it gets up to 3.5 hours of playtime on a full charge, sports an A/V out, one watt stereo sound, and a custom-built tray loading GD-ROM — just the thing for playing House of the Dead 2 on the go. No money for a secondary display? No use for that worn-down PSP? There’s hope for the future, friend. Hacker avi has discovered that Sony’s handheld makes for a wonderful status monitor, providing a clean look at your PC’s CPU usage, memory allocation and system temperature levels. All you’ll need is a bit of training in Python, Lua for the PSP and a sister willing to stop watching UMD movies long enough for you to give this a go.

Ben Heck‘s latest device isn’t gonna help you take your next-gen gaming on the go, nor will it let you play with one hand. Instead, the Xbox 360 Controller Monitor is designed to test gamepad latency using a data cable hooked up directly to each button and fed into a 8 x 8 inch display board. Each action lights up the corresponding indicator, and it includes three levels of sensitivity for each cardinal direction of the joysticks and shoulder triggers. At $600 (controller and AA batteries included), it’s not exactly something for the hobbyists out there, but already this thing’s got some major gaming street cred: it’s currently being used for playtesting on Mass Effect 2, the new Wolfenstein, and the just announced Modern Warfare 2.

The blogster known as tnkgrl has just rounded out a delightful series of step-by-step Acer Aspire One hacks covering the gamut from RAM upgrades to installing internal Bluetooth, a 1.8-inch HDD, and HSDPA 3G. For the final part of the series she’s salvaged an eSATA socket and placed it just above the venerable netbook’s second SD card slot — and she’s provided enough photographic evidence that if this were a crime, she’d go away for a very long time. Of course, this sort of anti-social warranty-voiding business ain’t for the timid, but if you’re feeling rather Legend Of Billie Jean, here’s your opportunity to go wild.

Adding even more credibility to the whole “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” mantra is this… masterpiece / abomination. Inspired by the iconic Aliens films, this completely over the top PlayStation 3 case mod is about as ridiculous as it gets. We’re not really told how the modder went about crafting this lovely interpretation, but we are given a few more snapshots to gawk at in the read link — which you won’t visit unless you too are an Aliens freak, but hey, that’s cool.
