Kindle 2 hacked for tethered web browsing, but not the way you think

Looking to hook your laptop up to your Kindle 2 and do a bit of free-riding on its built-in 3G modem? Then this is not the hack for you. If, on the other hand, you’ve been pining to browse the web on your Kindle and eschew the convenience of wireless connectivity, then you’re in luck! Apparently, the Kindle 2 has a few surprises in its debug mode that the original Kindle didn’t have, one of which is a USB networking facility that will let you bypass the usual 3G option and instead take advantage of the internet connection on a connected computer. Not the most practical option, to be sure, but it also probably won’t cause Amazon to start breathing down your neck (as the other, as yet not possible option, likely would). Apple iMac murdered, reborn as all-in-one DreamCast mod

This may look like a beloved iMac, but make no mistake, it’s just a shell of its former self. CGCC forum member Logicdustbin decided to gut the all-in-one and replace its innards with a Sega Dreamcast and 15-inch LCD monitor. The result? The iCast, a beautiful homage to simpler times. Hit up the video after the break to see this Fronk-en-shteen in action, playing a game that’ll assuredly prepare our children for a post-apocalyptic world.

AMD’s triple-core Phenom II X3 goes quad-core via BIOS hack

Here’s a little known secret for you to chew on: that triple-core AMD Phenom II X3 you purchased actually has four cores. The last one’s just locked down for pricing purposes. A Korean site has disclosed information that enables owners of select motherboards to unlock that fourth core, and apparently, all you need is a Biostar mobo and / or a BIOS that has an option labeled Advanced Clock Calibration. When said selection is flipped to “Auto,” the fourth core is loosed from its shackles and able to ever-so-slightly up your frame rates and overall level of excitement. Of course, you’re taking a big risk by running a chip in a fashion it was never intended, but what fun is life without a little edge-side living?

Modder hooks NES controller into Nintendo DS

This… this is dedication. While most softcore gamers are totally kosher with using the standard DS button layout to hit up retro titles like Super Mario Bros., Parked Bowab is definitely not. In order to bring back a sense of dignity to the heralded titles of the past (and to show off his fantastic modding skills), he hard wired an original NES controller to a Nintendo DS. The result? Authentic NES controls for games made famous on the iconic console. Bravo Parker, bravo.

A bit of surgery gives the HP Mini 1000 new sight

HP’s Mini 1000 might get all the ladies, but the netbook is not without its flaws. Apparently in the manufacturing process somebody forgot to remove the protective film from the webcam lens, giving thousands of netbooks incredibly impaired vision of their handsome owners. HP hasn’t fessed up to the problem in any grand manner, but an HP employee was kind enough to do some on-the-spot surgery of Gear Diary’s Vivienne Tam-edition Mini 1000. It’s not super-involved, so check out the video after the break and then go scare the life out of your girlfriend when you suddenly attack her flowery netbook with a pair of knives. Tell her Engadget sent you.

Update: At the time this post is going live, the video has been pulled from YouTube. We’re not sure what’s up with that, but the procedure is pretty simple: wedge open the top of the screen, push down the two connecting tabs to separate it more, pull off the film with tweezers. This might void your warrant (in fact, probably does) so proceed at your own risk!

PlayMad takes PSOne portable, shouts out to Sega’s Nomad

The aptly named PlayMad gets its label from the innate ability to handle original PlayStation titles and its uncanny resemblance to Sega’s own Nomad. X11 on G1 hack is for those who like a little extra OS in their OS

Android may be doing its best to exterminate Linux on the mobile platform, but a dedicated group of fans is doing its best to keep it alive and on the move. One of those is a G1 user by the handle ghostwalker who managed to get a full X-Windows environment running on his handset. Building on the already working Debian version for the G1, he installs LXDE (the Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) on top and then connects to that using the Android VNC viewer. The process sounds straightforward (as far as these things go) and is fully detailed at the read link, but as always don’t blame us if you break your poor Android’s shell — and heart.

Windows 3.1 running on Nokia N95 is both awesome and depressing

If these screenshots are to be believed, then an ironic hacker has successfully installed Windows 3.1 onto a Nokia N95 handset. Marchin-PRV used DOSBox to emulate the x86-class processor on the Symbian handset in order to install Microsoft’s 1992 OS. Totally useless, yes… and totally badazz.

Video: Apple’s iPhone and Bluetooth keyboard get together, have a good ole time

Not that we’ve never seen a jailbroken iPhone get cozy with a keyboard before, but this is just a match made in heaven. Not according to those who matter in Cupertino, mind you, but since when have you renegade hackers cared about those folks? The video waiting down in the read link shows off an Apple Bluetooth keyboard interacting with an iPhone 3G, but it seems that you’ll have to wait a bit longer before the general public gets instructions / files / etc. in order to replicate.

How To Bring Hulu Back to Boxee and XBMC

Today was supposed to be the day Hulu stopped streaming content to to your TV via Boxee, but luckily there could be a way to get around this problem.

An XBMC team developer with the forum handle “d4rk” has developed a quick and dirty plug-in that should get Hulu back up and running (although it is untested). Not surprisingly, hackers have chosen to fight the power. [XBMC via Boxee Forum via Lifehacker]
