Psyko Audio finally ships outre 5.1 surround sound headset

Psyko Audio, remember those guys? No? Can’t say we blame ya — after all, they first introduced these very headphones at CES in 2009, and we’re just now seeing the first sets ship to consumers in North America. We’re just as curious as you as to what caused a nearly 1.5 year delay, but hey, if you’ve been longing for 5.1 channels of audio in a package that requires nothing more than a source and your dome, we suspect you’ll be in the “better late than never” camp. And yeah, the company is indeed charging a borderline insane $299.99 for these, but considering that said outlay buys you an “unfair advantage over the competition through precise 3D sound that drastically heightens awareness of your gaming surroundings,” it’s fairly easy to justify. Oh, and the public humiliation that’ll come with wearing these outside of your basement is on the house. Huzzah!

Update: So, we found out that these have been slipping out in limited quantities since last August to those who pre-ordered, but the flood gates have just now opened up.

Get a Gaming Edge with 3D Audio

PsykoAudio.jpgNot only does the Psyko 5.1 PC Gaming Headset System look completely amazing (especially if you’re in middle school), but it also offers an advantage–an unfair advantage–the Psyko higher-ups say, when gaming: it provides full immersion 3D audio that allows you to precisely identify movements around you. It uses five speakers placed around the headband to channel sound to the ear in a natural way. The bridge contains front left, center, front right, rear left, and rear right speakers, as well as a subwoofer in each ear cup. That’s seven speakers total.

The secret is that the speakers aren’t positioned right at your ear, but are set farther back. Sound is carried through wave guides to pass over the front and back of both ears, giving a more natural sound. The microphone is removable and the ear cups are open so you can hear conversation in the room. These list for $299.99 and can be found at NewEgg.com, among other stores.

Plantronics Launches Explorer 395 Bluetooth Headset

Plantronics_Explorer_395.jpg

Plantronics has launched the Explorer 395, a budget Bluetooth device that aims to bring the brand’s good sound quality and style to a lower price point: $49.95.
That means you’ll forego some of the more advanced Plantronics features, such as advanced noise cancellation, a dual-mic design, and multi-point technology for pairing with two devices simultaneously.
That said, the 395 features dedicated buttons for volume, power, and call answer/end. It can pair quickly and automatically with newer cell phones, and includes DSP technology to suppress external noise and boost audio quality in both directions.
The Explorer 395 is available at www.plantronics.com and at www.bestbuy.com beginning today.

Runners Find Tech at the Boston Marathon

sennheiser.bmpIf you’re running the 114th Boston Marathon on Monday or just cheering on a well-conditioned, pain-loving friend or relative, you’ll find some excellent tech there to help running performance. Sennheiser will have a booth set up to spread the word about the line of in-ear sports performance headphones it created with Adidas. The CX 680 (at left) won the Innovations Award at CES this year, due to its performance versatility. It’s insensitive to vibrations, can withstand cold and moisture, and cleans off easily under the tap.

Not all tech will be confined to the booth area: Jason, the CEO for RunKeeper, the best running app for the iPhone by far, will run the entire marathon dressed as an iPhone for the second year. This time he’ll be joined by Aaron, one of his company’s developers, who will be dressed like an Android phone to mark the app’s Android release. This is Aaron’s first marathon and he’s opting to run it in padding-free Vibram FiveFingers shoes (ca-razy!). Both guys are collecting donations for charity, so cheer them on with a little cash.

Earloomz get Lady Gaga designs to help you look cooler, she’s still k-kinda too busy to take your call

You know, we’re starting to wonder if Lady Gaga is secretly a gigantic nerd. She’s not only the Creative Director over at Polaroid, as well as having her own Beats by Dre headphones, but now… her likeness is on a Bluetooth headset. Now, we don’t know if this is officially licensed Gaga gear or not, and there are plenty of other wild designs to choose from (though this is obviously the eyecatcher of the collection). This bad boy supports Bluetooth v2.1+EDR, and uses an internal rechargeable lithium polymer battery with around eight hours of talk time. They’re available now for around $60. So our only question is: how long until Gaga gets a giant Bluetooth earpiece made out of her hair?

Jabra Has the Cure for Cellbow

Cellbow.jpgThose clever people at Jabra, or perhaps their clever PR agency, have shown us a new ailment for our times. And luckily, they have the cure.

The ailment is “cellbow,” or “cell phone elbow,” and it comes from holding your cell phone to your ear for too long. Couldn’t this also be an issue with regular landline phones? Sure, but just go with the joke.

To raise awareness of cellbow and promote Bluetooth headset use, Jabra has launched a new site and a contest. Visit www.gotcellbow.com to watch funny videos about the new condition. Share a video with a friend to view the next one in the series and to be entered into Jabra’s contest. First prize is a MacBook Air, second is an Apple iPhone, and third is one of 25 Jabra Stone Bluetooth headsets. The videos are cute and well done, so take a peek.

Motorola announces H17txt Bluetooth headset with MotoSpeak

Looking for another reason to wear a Bluetooth headset all the time? Then you might want to consider admitting you have a problem, or you might want to get Motorola’s new H17txt model, which can be paired with the company’s new MotoSpeak text-to-speech application to read text messages aloud as they come in. That software is available for Android and BlackBerry initially, and will apparently even translate 150 different commonly used acronyms so things like l8r don’t get read as l, eight, r. As for the headset itself, it’s a fairly standard affair, with it boasting CrystalTalk noise-canceling technology, five hours of talk time and seven hours standby, and Bluetooth 2.1 compatibility. Still no indication of a price, but it should be available through Verizon starting today.

Hands on with the Astro A30 Gaming Headset

Astro - A30 - Banner 2Fans of console and PC gaming headsets know about Astro. Even though they may not have the market share of their larger competitors, they have a large and dedicated following among gamers and arguably some of the most versatile headsets on the market.  Last month Astro unveiled the A30 Cross-Gaming Headset, one of the first headsets available designed to be portable, and complete with an in-line microphone for telephone calls as well as a boom mic for gaming sessions. The A30 is also designed to be used with consoles and PCs and doesn’t require driver installs or custom hardware to work.

Astro sent us an A30 to test, and it’s as versatile as they say. The A30 performed well as a general use headset to wear connected to an mp3 player on the go, or connected to a cell phone to take a call using the in-line microphone. It also worked just as well when connected to its boom mic and a PC for multiplayer gaming or everyday applications like listening to music or watching video.

Sony intros four new made for iPod / iPhone headsets

Sony’s already kicked out some decent looking PC gaming headsets this month, and it’s now followed those up a new batch of ‘buds (and one set of over-the-ear headphones) that are “made for” for your iPod or iPhone. The earbuds come in the form of the DR-EX300iP, MDR-EX38iP, and MDR-E10iP, which pack either 9mm or 13mm Neodymium drivers, along with in-line controls, a built-in mic and, in the latter two cases, your choice of two different colors. They’re joined by the DR-V150iP headphones “tailor-made for DJs,” which pack the same in-line controls and mic, along with a 30mm ferrite driver that promises “deep bass and generous power handling.” Of the lot, only the MDR-EX38iP is available now (for $40), with the rest due out in May.
