HP CEO Leo Apotheker has already indicated that he’s totally open to licensing webOS to other companies, and he’s now confirmed that HP has, in fact, been in talks with a “number of companies” about that possibility. Not surprisingly, he didn’t get much more specific than that, and went some way to dampen expectations a bit, saying that “there is no time pressure to do this.” According to Bloomberg, however, “three people with knowledge of the discussions” say that Samsung is one of the companies HP has had talks with, and one said that the company is specifically interested in possibly using webOS for its Galaxy Tab tablets. HP’s Jon Rubinstein also dished a bit more on the subject to This is my next, noting that “if someone wants to really invest, and potentially help develop webOS, we’re interested in talking to them,” although he went on to indicate that HP isn’t interested in playing second (or third) fiddle with a company primarily focused on Android or Windows Phone — it’d seemingly have to be webOS first, but not necessarily webOS exclusively.

Finding apps can be tough, especially when your Store or Marketplace is overwhelmed with a daily flood of debutantes. That’s not exactly a problem for HP, whose App Catalog for the webOS 3.0 TouchPad officially launches on July 1st and will be, the company admits, a little spartan at first. But HP has a plan for a future flood of apps: Pivot. It’s basically a curated digital magazine that will present a selection of apps someone at HP found interesting for whatever reason — a way for users to discover new downloads and, more importantly, for niche developers to not get lost in the shuffle. HP hopes this will attract developers, taking a different approach from the competition, which often resorts to outright promises of cash to pique their interest — but a few free TouchPads never hurts .

The HP TouchPad features a 1.3-megapixel front facing camera and a 1.2 GHz Snapdragon processor.

HP’s answer to the iPad, the TouchPad, is now available for pre-order.

The HP TouchPad, which was first revealed in February, is set to go on sale July 1, but you can currently pre-order it on HP’s website.

Consumers can also pre-order the tablet from retailers such as Best Buy, Newegg, Amazon, Costco, Staples, and TigerDirect. There is no expected ship date currently listed for TouchPad pre-orders.

HP’s webOS tablet sports a 9.7-inch, 1024-by-768-pixel screen and will be available in two models: a $500 16-GB version and a $600 32-GB version. One feature that set the TouchPad apart from other tablets was its Touchstone technology, which shares information between the tablet and HP/Palm Pre phones. Apple’s new iCloud service (a major foray into data synchronization and online storage) renders that functionality a bit less exciting.

The TouchPad joins the crop of tablet devices hitting the market in the wake of Apple’s iPad. At the Consumer Electronics Show in January, manufacturers showcased nearly 100 tablets powered by Google’s Android OS. Some technology journalists argue that the TouchPad’s approach make it a more viable competitor to the iPad: HP and Palm developed both the hardware and operating system in house, meaning the device’s user experience should have the elegance and polish necessary to make a tablet succeed.

In addition to making the TouchPad available for pre-order, HP has also posted a slew of instructional demo videos showing off the key features of their tablet on YouTube. Below is an overview of the TouchPad, but other videos detail things like wireless charging using Touchstone, notifications and the device’s multitasking functionality.
