HTC Magic Coming to Canada Before USA

vodafone-magic.jpgCanadians may have a cozy wireless oligarchy, but sometimes they get some coups. For example: Rogers Wireless today announced they’re getting the HTC Magic, HTC’s second Google Android phone, in June – potentially months before we see it on T-Mobile here in the USA.
Rogers will also get the HTC Dream, aka the T-Mobile G1, in June. Neither model will be the same as the T-Mobile units – T-Mobile’s phones have HSDPA 3G on the 1700 frequency band, while Rogers uses 850 and 1900.
Rogers hasn’t announced pricing or other details, but their Web site promises big news on June 2. That’s going to be one heck of a week if the HTC Dream, Palm Pre and Apple iPhone all come out in North America within six days, as is currently anticipated.

HTC working on an Android netbook for T-Mobile?

Man, the Android netbook hype is just getting silly as we draw nearer to Computex: the whispers today are that HTC and T-Mobile are working on a 3G-capable machine running Google’s OS. That vague bit of info is all we have at the moment, but it’s not totally insane — HTC and T-Mobile are bosom buddies in the Android game, after all. We’ll keep an ear to the ground.

HTC Hero caught flashing some Android in the wild?

Remember that shockingly pink (false color, we presume) Hero that was allegedly part of HTC’s planned Android lineup for 2009? CodeAndroid appears to have nabbed the first in-the-wild shots of the very phone, and it’s got every bit as much “chin” in real life as it did in those fuchsia renders. That could be good or bad news depending on just how strongly you feel about the G1’s unforgettable cosmetics, but also notable here is that we appear to have an honest-to-goodness 3.5mm headphone jack up top — a first for an HTC Android device — and an utter lack of any d-pad. The trackball is certainly gone, so unless there’s some wild touch-sensitive area below the screen, it seems like the touchscreen might be the only way to navigate. How this phone ultimately stacks up against its stablemates when it hits the market later this year remains to be seen, but at a quick glance, we’d say the Magic’s looking more like a beauty queen than ever.

HTC Magic / Sapphire gets re-named, booze-colored for T-Mobile launch?

HTC Magic / Sapphire gets re-named, booze-colored for T-Mobile launch

Of all the names being bandied about for the T-Mobile launch of HTC’s Sapphire, we have to say that “myTouch” was our least favorite nom de guerre. However, it has apparently won the market-testing deathmatch — at least that’s the case according to the above reasonably official looking image of a T-Mobile inventory screen acquired by TmoNews. Perhaps more interesting is the presence of three colors, the predictable black and white met by a classy-sounding merlot that will surely be the talk of your next soiree at the wine bar. Just try to steer clear of the “touch” puns and jokes, yeah?

HTC Snap reviewed: QWERTY keyboard, Winmo 6.1, no great shakes

We know you’ve been dying to get your hands all over the HTC Snap… oh, wait. You haven’t? Well, neither have we — but no matter, ‘cos Smartphone Daily has a review, and they’ve filled us in on the luscious deets. For the uninitiated, this is a 2.4-inch, Windows Mobile 6.1, touchscreen deficient candybar, and something of a BlackBerry doppelganger (if only in the looks department), featuring WiFi and a camera. Wild, huh? Overall, the reviewer found it to be “decent” — if you’re looking for a “business device,” that is. The Inner Circle feature was singled out for some praise: little more than an Inbox filter for your, erm, “inner circle,” you have to wonder why a manufacturer hadn’t thought of it before. On the downside, he did find the inclusion of a TAB key (where the A key belongs) to be particularly annoying. This bad boy will go on sale this summer in Europe, at which time the S522 (as it’s known ’round here) should hit the shops Stateside. One more pic after the break.

T-Mobile neither confirms nor denies Android 1.5 availability for G1

Ready for some totally prototypical corporate non-answers regarding the alleged release of Android 1.5 on T-Mobile USA’s G1s? Good. Here you go:

“T-Mobile USA will confirm details of Android 1.5 availability for our T-Mobile G1 customers in the near future.”

Doesn’t mean much to us — and it’s hard to tell from that alone whether 1.5’s actually begun over-the-air distribution — but at any rate, it seems like they’re not ready to talk about it yet. Don’t keep us waiting long, guys.

HTC Magic Android Phone Gets Unboxed

The second Android mobile operating system based phone from HTC, the HTC Magic, will be available in Europe through Vodafone.  Earlier this month we posted a quick hands-on with the device from the CTIA wireless conference.

Now German site Netbook News has a video showing the unboxing of the phone and a walk through its user interface.

Unlike the G1, the HTC Magic has a virtual keyboard. That makes the device slimmer than the G1 but when it comes to the UI it is very similar to its predecessor.  So far, there’s been no word on when the Magic will be available in the U.S. but if it does make its way here it is likely to be on the T-Mobile network.

HTC’s XV6175 for Verizon outed in render form

Yo, T-Mobile, you guys might want to speed that Snap / Dash 2 / whatever along, because you’ve got a few carriers nipping at your heels with their own WinMo-based portrait QWERTY models fresh out of HTC’s foundry. There’s a whole jumble of codenames and model numbers used to identify this thing, but basically, you can look at the XV6175 as Verizon’s answer to the GSM-powered Snap and S522 — a device that’s been seen in Sprint’s roadmap as the Willow and in various regulatory agencies as the Cedar (ridiculous, yes, we know). We don’t have any better idea of when it might launch, but in the meanwhile, feast your eyes on this render we’ve unearthed — and enjoy the Verizon logo-free bezel while you can, because we’ll bet you a bazillion dollars that’s not lasting.

Android Dev Phones get early shot at Cupcake

While mere mortals will most likely have to wait until May to get at Cupcake (probably even stooping so low as to refer to it as Android 1.5, those commoners), the proud, good-looking possessors of Android Dev Phones can get at the update right this instant from HTC’s website. Naturally, we’d assume somebody’s going to figure out how to get these images onto rooted G1s before long, but we wouldn’t want to over estimate the intelligence or temerity of the proletariat.

Vodafone Spain first to launch HTC Magic

In a surprise announcement, Vodafone Spain is set to launch Magic, HTC’s 2nd Android handset, in just a few hours. The countdown timer appeared early this morning with local sales set to begin at 1700 hours. That gives Vodafone Spain subscribers an 8 day head start on the rest of the world — an eternity for Android nerds. Unfortunately, while it’s free with applicable contract on Vodafone UK, it’s gonna cost you in Spain — rates our Spanish friends describe as “outrageous.” Let’s see if our Canadian friends agree.
