HTC exec Horace Luke leaves company for ‘personal reasons’

HTC is out a top executive with the departure of chief innovation officer Horace Luke. The exec has been gone for some time now, having exited at the end of April. The Taiwanese phone maker formally announced the news this week, citing “personal reasons” as the motivation behind the CIO’s exit. HTC had nothing but kind words for Luke, who had been with the company since 2006, stating that he had “nurtured a culture of innovation.” The company’s vice president of design, Scott Croyle, has stepped into the Luke’s vacant position.

AT&T confirms Gingerbread coming to entire 2011 Android lineup (and Samsung Captivate)

The HTC Status was the only device with Gingerbread on AT&T’s lineup for a small slice of time, but that’s quickly coming to an end. The carrier has confirmed that Android 2.3 will be pushed to its entire 2011 postpaid lineup, beginning with an OTA rollout of the Motorola Atrix 4G today (though and the HTC Inspire 4G “in the coming weeks.” In addition to the phones released this year, Samsung Captivate users will be able to enjoy the upgrade as well. There’s no hard details on the timing for everyone else, but at least anyone with a 2011 model can breath a sigh of relief. Full press release can be found after the break.

HTC Ruby images leak via Flickr, mysteriously disappear

HTC Ruby images leak via Flickr, mysteriously disappear

It looks like someone forgot about the HTC Flyer’s glossy screen: a series of shots (now pulled) from Flickr reveal what appears to be the backside of a new HTC smartphone. The photo sharing service outed the shots as being taken by an HTC Ruby, a white-backed smartphone with a dual-flash camera and 3.5mm audio jack. Really, that’s all we know. The last phone HTC codenamed “Ruby” turned out to be the HTC Arrive, so maybe this gem will shine with a Mango-tinged hue. Then again, Android is just as likely to use cameras and headphone jacks as any other OS, so really it’s anybody’s game. Hit the break for a bonus reflecto-shot and tell us what you think this phantom phone ought to run.

HTC Salsa ditches its Facebook button for Weibo in China

When is a “Facebook phone” not a Facebook phone? When it’s in China. While this handset may look like an HTC Salsa at first glace, if you look a little closer you’ll notice that the familiar little blue button has been replaced with one for Sina’s Weibo social networking service. Lest you think this is just another KIRF, however, you can rest assured this is indeed the real deal, and a fairly big deal for HTC, considering that Weibo has around 150 million total users, and 50 million active monthly users. As for the phone itself, it’s remained mostly unchanged otherwise, with it packing an 800MHz processor and a 3.4-inch 480 x 320 display, along with Android 2.3.3 with Sense 2.1 on top. Head on past the break for a video, and hit the source link below for a closer look.

HTC Status review

For many smartphone users, a quality keyboard is the only feature that truly matters. These passionate devotees will proudly live and die with their thumbs blazing, and for of all RIM’s recent troubles, it’s currently floating on a life preserver: a compelling handset with a portrait QWERTY keyboard doesn’t exist for Android. The HTC Status ($50 on contract) attempts to succeed where others have failed, and — if it’s any good — could entice many BlackBerry-toting teens that want a new handheld fixation. They rarely bother with email, as text messages and Facebook reign supreme for communication. To that end, the Status promotes itself as the perfect phone for Facebook users, but is the integration truly useful, or simply a chintzy add-on? More so, can HTC successfully marry Gingerbread with an upright keyboard? Join us after the break to learn whether we “Like” the HTC Status.

Android deals just got weird: free phones for pants, free flights for phones

Android deals just got weird: free phones for pants, free flights for phones

Next time you’re trying on a pair of (non musical) jeans, why not snag a free Android phone to help fill their roomy pockets? And while you’re shopping for that big trip you’ve got planned, you can let “HTC Airlines” book that flight for you. Honest, it’s no trouble at all. Well, it’s a little trouble. Wet Seal’s “try on some pants and get a free phone” deal comes attached to a two-year contract, and those flights? Still free, but only if you happen to be picking up your HTC Status or Salsa in Germany. You didn’t expect them to offer a free ride to just anybody, anywhere, did you?

T-Mobile makes HTC Wildfire S official, available August 3rd for $80

True to earlier reports, the HTC Wildfire S finally has a home at T-Mobile. The carrier-phone relationship was formalized today as the magenta-colored mobile provider announced its availability on August 3rd. The device — code-named Marvel — will be $80 with two-year commitment and after $50 mail-in rebate. It has all the amenities we expected, including Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), a 3.2-inch HVGA display, 512MB RAM, a Qualcomm MSM7227 600MHz CPU, and a 5 megapixel shooter. You’ll be able to get the phone in white or black; the only other differences in the new version appear to be the Swype keyboard and the inclusion of AWS bands. If you desire a handset that’ll ease the pain on the thin wallet in your pocket, you have only a week to wait.

Gingerbread heads to T-Mobile myTouch 4G starting today, won’t stop anytime soon

Looking to spice up your myTouch 4G? Don’t move a muscle. Starting today, T-Mobile will begin taking Gingerbread out of the oven, so to speak, for a limited number of users, with the majority of owners to see it in the weeks ahead. Included in the update is the latest Swype build and compatibility with Exchange 2010 — along with fixes for Bluetooth, a more stable and responsive display, improved domestic roaming, saving from the messages inbox, and the usual “other” software improvements. The company also reminds subscribers that it’s unable to push the update manually, so you’ll just have to wait your turn. But in the meantime, you can get all those awesome cookie decorations ready. Huzzah!

CE-Oh no he didn’t!: Google’s Eric Schmidt says competitors are ‘responding with lawsuits’ instead of innovation

Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt may have primarily been at Google’s Mobile Revolution conference in Tokyo to talk about the company’s ambitious goals for Asia, but it turns out he was also quite ready to discuss the myriad of patent lawsuits swirling around the mobile industry these days — or “legal fun,” as Schmidt put it. While not directly referring to any company by name, Schmidt said that because of Google’s success with Android, “competitors are responding with lawsuits as they cannot respond through innovations,” although he added that he’s “not too worried about this.” Schmidt did specifically comment on HTC’s current situation, though, and said that “we will make sure they don’t lose” in response to a question about whether Google would help foot HTC’s legal bills if it lost its case before ITC.

HTC’s Puccini tablet passes through the FCC, has AT&T written all over it

Remember that HTC 10-inch Puccini tablet we spotted in May? It just passed through the FCC’s gates with the model number PG09410 and from the looks of things, is headed straight for AT&T’s network. The rumored Honeycomb tablet’s sporting the requisite GSM 850, 1900MHz frequencies and 3G WCDMA 850 and 1900MHz bands, but the real showstopper here are the slate’s LTE radios. With both AWS 4 and 17 bands on board, it’d be a pretty safe guess to see this launch alongside the orange-colored carrier’s LTE rollout. We should note that the FCC doesn’t test for European compatibility, so you could still see this bad boy hit across the Atlantic. What else can we glimpse from that diagram in blue? Based on the size of what appears to be a SIM card slot, we found this Android tab measuring in at the 10-inch mark. Also, you can expect a dual speaker set-up, but sadly no 3D camera. With the rumored June launch date already passed, we’re hoping this’ll hit late summer.
