Motorola’s Atrix 4G coming to AT&T on March 6th for $200, bundled with Laptop Dock for $500

Don’t ever say Ma Bell lacks cahones. On the same day that existing Verizon customers began pre-ordering the CDMA’d iPhone 4, AT&T has come clean with what’s next on America’s largest GSM network. While announced at CES 2011, pricing and release information had eluded the luscious Atrix 4G… until now, that is. AT&T will begin pre-sales for the Froyo-powered Motorola Atrix 4G Android superphone on February 13th, with the standard $199.99 + two-year contract ($50 more than we were led to believe, mind you) getting one into your grubby mitts. We’re told to expect general availability on March 6th “or earlier,” putting it just about in line with the date we’d heard rumored. Moreover, those looking to buy will should have a difficult time laying off of the Laptop Dock bundle, which nets you an Atrix 4G as well as a $499.99 dock for the grand total of $499.99 on contract. You heard right — those who opt to buy the dock at a later time will be asked to shell out five Benjamins, whereas that same tally on day one will also include the phone. It should be noted, however, that the bundle only applies if you also sign your name to a Data Pro plan and tethering add-on, so be sure you’re down for that monthly hit before committing in haste. Oh, and just in case you simply can’t stop spending, the carrier is also offering an Entertainment Access Kit for Atrix 4G customers which includes the Motorola HD Multimedia Dock, a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and a remote control for $189.99.

Amazon celebrates its first ‘$10 billion quarter’ in sales, finds Kindle books overtaking paperbacks

July 19, 2010 marked the day that Amazon’s digital book sales eclipsed the sales of hardcover books, and it barely took half a year for those e-book sales to also overtake the sales of paperbacks. According to the ouftit’s latest earnings release, “Kindle books have now overtaken paperback books as the most popular format on Amazon.com.” The company had surmised that this would happen by Q2 of this year, but it clearly went down a lot earlier than even it expected. Bezos and co. also sold through $12.95 billion worth of goods, representing The Jungle’s first “$10 billion quarter.” That came up to $416 million in net income, representing an eight percent uptick year-over-year. Of note, operating income slipped from $476 million in Q4 2009 to $474 million this year, with the unfavorable impact from year-over-year changes in foreign exchange rates generating a staggering $18 million hit.

When looking at 2010 as a whole, Amazon’s sales were up 40 percent over 2009, with operating income rising some 25 percent to $1.41 billion compared to the whole of 2009. Speaking specifically of the Kindle, the company is now moving 115 Kindle books for every 100 paperbacks sold, but this obviously only takes into account the US book business. We’re still no closer to finding out exactly how many Kindles have been moved, but we’re told that “millions” of the third-gen model were moved in Q4 2010, and the Kindle Storeitself has over 810,000 books on its digital shelves. Samsung takes aim at Apple’s notebook crown, projects 60 percent increase in laptop sales in 2011

Samsung has sought to take market share from all manner of iProducts over the years, and it seems the company is now shooting to steal Apple’s MacBook thunder in 2011. Sammy sold ten million laptops in 2010 — only 150,000 less than Jobs & Co. through the first nine months of the year — and purportedly plans to move between sixteen and seventeen million portable machines in 2011. That is a massive increase in sales, but if the Korean company’s 9 Series is an indication of what’s to come, we can’t say it’s a completely unrealistic goal. Whether they move more product than Apple is still to be determined, but given its record Q4 earnings, there’s no indication that the Cupertino crowd will be slowing down any time soon. Game on, fellas.

LG: Windows Phone 7 launch did not meet expectations, still a fine OS for ‘a huge segment’

The only hard news we’ve seen from Microsoft regarding Windows Phone 7 sales was less than revealing, but it seems that LG is stepping out from the behind the curtain a bit to let us in on how things are going — from its perspective, anyway. In a sit-down with the folks over at Pocket-lint, LG’s marketing strategy and planning team director James Choi noted: “From an industry perspective we had a high expectation, but from a consumer point of view the visibility is less than we expected.” Nothing too shocking there, but he followed up by noting that LG feels Windows Phone 7 “is absolutely perfect for a huge segment out there.” Perhaps more shocking was this tidbit: “What we feel is that some people believe that some operating systems, mainly Google, are extremely complicated for them; but Windows Phone 7 is very intuitive and easy to use.” He followed his not-terribly-subtle Android jab with a WP7 jab, oddly enough, noting that “for tech guys, [WP7] might be a little bit boring after a week or two, but there are certain segments that it really appeals to.” What’s left unclear is exactly how much support LG is going to give Microsoft after launching the Optimus 7, but we’re guessing that next month’s outlay at Mobile World Congress will be a huge indication. Naturally, we’ll be there with our eyes peeled.

OCZ quits DRAM business to focus on super-speedy SSDs

OCZ, a company that started life a decade ago by churning out DRAM modules for enthusiasts to throw into their towering rigs, has now announced it’s abandoning that market entirely. As PC Perspective points out, it’s grown increasingly difficult for companies to differentiate their products when it comes to memory — most of it just works and most of it is pretty fast — and continually declining prices have apparently forced OCZ’s hand. The San Jose-based company’s new primary breadwinner will be solid state drives, which already account for a substantial proportion of revenues and look set to grow exponentially as their own prices dip a little further into the range of the affordable. It’s a shame we’ll no longer have that bold Z to look at when picking out memory sticks for our next self-built machine, but maybe it’s all for the best. CES 2011 sees big boost in attendance, CES 2012 scheduled way more sensibly

Good news for people who love bad good news. According to IDG News, this year’s Consumer Electronics Show saw around 140,000 people descend upon it, which pretty much destroys the estimate of 126,000 attendees. We’re told that around 126,000 humans showed up last year to see Palm introduce webOS 1.4 (and for everyone else to introduce an e-reader), while just 113,000 booked a ticket to Las Vegas for CES 2009. The last time this quantity of Earthlings arrived in the desert to get their geek on was CES 2008, or in other terms, the last year that life as we knew it was halfway normal. There’s no question that we felt as if the floor was teeming with people, and the show in general just felt more alive than usual.

Furthermore, we’re being hit with even more amazing news from the show floor: the official show dates for 2012. Rather than pushing CES up against a pair of holidays in Christmas and New Year’s Day, the Consumer Electronics Association has finally seen fit to bump things forward a week. CES 2012 will officially be held January 10th through 13th, and we’re guessing that most of the press events will start on the 8th or 9th. Sadly, we weren’t able to go three for three with outstanding news today — the show is still slated to be held in Las Vegas, so we’re apologizing in advance to the internationals who will once again wonder how a place overran with neon, grotesque paper cards at every street corner and a public transportation system that only stops once every five minutes could be so highly touted.

Audiovox to buy Klipsch, we can’t help but worry

It’s true. Audiovox, a relative no-name in terms of consumer end products in the music industry, has just signed a non-binding term sheet to purchase all of the shares of Klipsch Group and its worldwide subsidiaries. We’re told that the transaction is subject to a number of contingencies, “including satisfactory completion of due diligence, negotiation and signing of definitive agreements and requisite approvals,” but we can’t imagine anything popping up to stop the inevitable. No hard financial terms were revealed, and there’s no estimated closing date for the deal. Oddly enough, Klipsch was here at CES unveiling a smattering of new products, and Audiovox was also here showing off far, far less interesting gear. We’re hoping and praying that Audiovox allows Klipsch to continue working as its own entity rather than swallowing ’em whole and stifling innovation with corporate bureaucracy (similar to how Disney lets ESPN run its own show), but we’ll be honest — we’re feeling a little uneasy about it. Klipsch is definitely one of our favorite audio companies around, and the last thing we’d want is to see a good company get hit with an undue amount of heavy-handed corporate control. Here’s hoping for the best!

MSI teases Killer NIC integration in Big Bang motherboards

You won’t be coloring us surprised here — when we spoke with Bigfoot Networks CEO Michael Howse back at Computex, he didn’t hesitate to disclose his interest in embedding Bigfoot’s networking technology into motherboards and GPUs of the future. And now, it seems that the future has arrived. Based on a sneaky, nondescript release posted after the break, it looks as if Bigfoot and MSI will be hooking up at CES next week to introduce a newfangled version of the Big Bang motherboard. The announcement doesn’t come right out and say it, but considering that at least one MSI motherboard will be “blazing with Killer 2100 performance,” we’d say it’s fair to read between the lines. Howse is also quoted as saying that he’s “pleased to be working with MSI,” and up until now, there’s been no public partnership between the two firms. According to him, the Killer 2100 gaming network card “is a perfect complement to the MSI Big Bang family of mainboard solutions,” and you can bet we’ll be on the hunt for a model name, price and release date just as soon as we hit Vegas.

Toshiba outsourcing semiconductor production to rival Samsung

‘Tis the season for manufacturing deals? Sure seems it. Merely hours after Sony announced its intentions to buy back Cell chip fabrication facilities from Toshiba, it looks as if Tosh is about to enter into yet another agreement. In this case, it’ll be outsourcing the unprofitable production of semiconductors to rival Samsung, which will be responsible for churning out the brains behind a number of smartphones, televisions and digital home appliances. Numerous sources have explained that Toshiba is interested in realigning its focus onto the blossoming memory chip business, and moreover, its hoping to evade costly facility upgrades that would be necessary to remain competitive in the system LSI business.

In other words, the company is dodging investment costs and placing a greater emphasis on a sector that’s already profitable (NAND flash production, for those curious), and after the Oita plant is handed off, it’ll be used to make image sensors in digital cameras. The Nagasaki plant, as we heard earlier, will be handed over to Sony. Toshiba’s stocks were sent northward after investors welcomed the news, but of course it remains to be seen what kind of consumer impact this will have. Whatever the case, we certainly hope Toshiba never runs into any trouble with Sammy — it’s not like its top brass can be touched, regardless of infraction.

Does Peek’s future lay in low-powered feature phones, emerging markets?

The overriding philosophy at Peek is “keep it simple,” and we have to agree that as these things go, this is a pretty sound principle (even if we don’t necessarily have much use for dedicated Twitter hardware). If the big payoff for the company isn’t in the gadget-addicted states, it’s been a good start: the company has sold some 50,000 units in two years while developing the back-end technology that CEO Amol Sarva believes can supply cheap, low-powered feature phones and other devices for emerging markets — devices that could retail for as little as $50. “This is a huge opportunity for us,” Sarva told GigaOm. “We’ve built technology that no one cared about but now we’re suddenly being approached by guys who have the hardware that want to make it smart.” And if that doesn’t pan out, we have a suggestion: FourPeek, the dedicated Foursquare device.
