Eee PC 1215P 12-incher spotted with mammalian Ubuntu

Looks like Asus might be expanding its range of Linux-based netbooks for our delectation. In addition to the Meego and Ubuntu 10-inch models we’ve already seen, an Italian retailer is pushing a new 12-incher on pre-order that hasn’t yet crossed our path. The 1215P sports a 1.5GHz Intel N570 Atom dual-core processor and 2GB of memory for 280 Euros ($400). Judging from a certification page for the 1215P at Ubuntu.com, there’s a strong chance it’ll come with 10.10 Maverick Meerkat pre-installed, which happens to be one of our favorite animals. Sure, meerkats sometimes kill each others’ offspring, but they’re way friendlier than narwhals.

[Thanks, Marco]

Intel to owners of failed SSD 320s: we’re ‘aware of the customer sightings’

We can imagine few things more horrible than booting up your new 600GB SSD and seeing a reported capacity of 8MB. That’s exactly the situation reported by users of Intel‘s SSD 320 series for over a month on the company’s support forums, as well as on Amazon reviews. One disappointed (to say the least) user describes that very scenario, and he’s not alone. According to several forum members, the problem seems firmware related and shouldn’t require a recall, while Intel says it’s “aware of the customer sightings.” Short on meaningful details, the statement promises an update is coming with more information — bite-sized consolation for the owners of byte-sized drives.

Mac Sales Up, iPod Sales Level Out in Q2

This article was written on April 24, 2008 by CyberNet.

Apple Logo.pngEver since Apple switched to Intel processors, they’ve seen the sales of their Mac computers go up, and up, and up. Part of this is probably due to the fact that former PC users feel comfortable making the “switch” knowing they can run Windows if need be. Apple’s fiscal second quarter just ended, and as the trend has been going lately, sales of Mac computers were up once again. In the official press release from Apple, they outlined just how many computers were sold.

In the 2nd quarter, over 2.2 million Mac computers were sold. To break it down further, notebook sales were up 61% (perhaps part of this increase is because of MacBook Air computers?) and desktops were up 37%. Out of the buyers who purchased a new computer from Apple this quarter, 50% of them were new to Mac which when you think about it, is pretty amazing. While Apple is far, far behind compared to the sales of PC computers, they’re doing a remarkable job gaining new users.

Also interesting are the numbers of iPods and iPhones that were sold. It almost looks as though the market is getting saturated with iPods because the sales for the 2nd quarter really didn’t go anywhere. Around 10.6 million iPods shipped this year in the 2nd quarter compared to 10.5 million in the 2nd quarter last year. About 1.7 million iPhones sold which is down compared to the 2.3 million that were shipped in their 1st fiscal quarter of 2008. One thought here is that iPod sales are flat because more people are investing in iPhones instead?

In all, Apple’s 2nd quarter revenue was around $7.51 billion which is up 43% from their 2nd quarter last year when revenue was $5.26 billion.

For those of you just skimming through, here’s a quick re-cap:

  • 2.2 million Macs shipped in the 2nd quarter
  • 61% of the sales were laptops
  • 37% were desktops
  • 50% of retail buyers are new to Mac

Samsung Series 3 and new Series 9 available for pre-order at J&R

Samsung Series 3

We haven’t even seen an official announcement yet regarding Samsung’s Series 3 laptops and, already, one has popped up for pre-order at J&R. When we manhandled the 12.1-inch model at Digital Experience we were pretty impressed by the build quality, light weight, and the promise of a low price. Well, this wallet-friendly ultraportable is officially pegged at $750 with a reasonably powerful 2.3GHz Core i5, 4GB of RAM, and 500GB hard drive inside. The downtown Manhattan staple also happens to have one of those 11.6-inch Series 9s listed for $999. Sure, it only packs a 1.3GHz Core i3 and 2GB of RAM, but the 64GB SSD should compensate for some of its performance shortcomings. Besides, the price premium almost seems worth it when you feel the sub 2.4-pound weight and Duralumin body. The Series 9 should still be shipping in August, and we imagine the Series 3 will launch around the same time — right on schedule to catch the back to school scramble. More specs and the all important pre-order buttons can be found at the source links.

[Thanks, Jaydee]

Apple Thunderbolt cable, Promise RAIDs now available to get your 10Gbps interconnect on

Apple Thunderbolt Cable
Was it really four months ago that Intel and Apple took the curtains off of Thunderbolt I/O? The MacBook Pro and iMac lines have since been refreshed with the interconnect, but early adopters haven’t had much more than a fancy port to stare at. Thankfully, Apple’s $49 T-bolt cable is finally available as your ticket to the 10Gbps superhighway. Apparently, it quietly hit Apple’s web store this morning along with some fresh Promise Pegasus RAID enclosures ($1k for 4TB up to $2K for 12TB) to support it. All of the peripherals appear to be in stock and ready to ship; so if you’ve been eagerly waiting to make use of that extra port, now’s your chance.

Intel says Cloverview platform will launch in time for Windows 8

Intel didn’t provide much indication of a release timeframe when it first teased its tablet-minded Cloverview platform back in April, but it’s now finally starting to dish a few more details (though still not many specifics, unfortunately). Speaking with This is my next, Intel’s Director of Product and Technology Media Relations, Bill Kircos, said that the chipmaker is looking to deliver a “nice one-two chip-software punch,” and roll out the Cloverview platform and accompanying Clover Trail processor around the same time as Windows 8 — possibly before, but seemingly no later. Of course, exactly when Windows 8 itself will launch still remains a bit of a mystery, although ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley notes that the latest rumor of a release to manufacturing in April of next year is not so crazy, and that “April sounds better than July.”

Sony’s ultraslim 13-inch VAIO Z laptop revealed in Europe, packs external GPU for power on demand

Turns out those leaked shots we saw of Sony’s new VAIO Z laptop were right on the money as the company showed it off officially today for the European press. The specs reveal a 13.1-inch “ultramobile” notebook that comes in at under 1.2kg with a 2.7GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM, 1600×900 screen and sheet battery borrowed from the earlier VAIO S for up to 7 hours of computing. Onboard it features only Intel’s HD Graphics 3000 solution but the VAIO Z beats other ultralights with its Power Media Dock, which contributes the power of an AMD Radeon 6650M GPU with 1GB of dedicated memory connected via “the architecture codenamed Light Peak” — Sony can’t call it Thunderbolt — when more polygons have to be pushed. The dock sports one USB 3.0 hookup plus additional USB, VGA and HDMI ports, and a slot for either a DVD or Blu-ray drive. There’s no word on a price yet, but it is promised to ship by the end of July in Europe so if the full specs (included after the break) are appealing then you don’t have much time to save up.

Update: Head over to the Sony UK site to configure one yourself — pricing starts at £1,434 ($2,294) with a Core i5 CPU, 4GB of RAM and no PMD. The dock is a £400 ($640) option with no optical drive included, while upgrading to a 1080p 13.1-inch LCD is a mere £40 extra.

HP Envy 14 Beats Edition gets a slice of Sandy Bridge silicon, costs $1,050 at Amazon (updated)

HP’s Envy 14 is quite the looker of a laptop, with its etched aluminum skin beckoning you to explore the capabilities of the Sandy Bridge CPU that lies beneath. For those who prefer the murdered-out look, the HP Envy Beats Edition is the preferable PC, but until now it lacked the upgraded Intel innards of its showy stablemate. That’s right, Amazon’s offering a second-gen Intel Core i5-2410M chip clocked at 2.3 GHz to go with those dark Dr. Dre aesthetics you crave (oddly it’s not yet for sale on HP’s website). The inky Envy with the big red “B” is priced at $1,050, or half a hundred more which is actually 30 bucks less than than buying its equivalently-equipped cousin direct from HP — awfully nice of the good Doctor to give us a discount.
