Lenovo IdeaPad U Series updated with Core i3, i5, i7 ULV processors

Well, thank you, Lenovo! Not only for updating the thin and light IdeaPad U Series laptops with new chiclet keyboards and ambient light sensors, but for finally giving us some details on Intel’s new Core i3, i5 and i7 ULV processors. That’s right, the new IdeaPad U lappies will be available at the beginning of June and will pack brand new Core 2010 ULV chips, which is in line with what we have heard about the release. Like the current U Series, the 11.6-inch U160, 13-inch U360,14-inch U460 and 15-inch U560 all measure less an an inch-thick and don’t weigh more than 3.8 pounds. And according to the spec sheets, all will be configurable with your pick of ultra-low-voltage Core i7 (1.6GHz Core i7-640UM, 1.06GHz Core i7-620UM), Core i5 (1.2GHz Core i5-540UM, 1.06GHz Core i5-520UM, 1.2GHz Core i5-430UM) and Core i3 (1.2GHz Core i3-330UM) processors. There’s no indication of discrete graphics options, but on the lower end there are also be Pentium and Celeron processor choices — we’re assuming the $679 starting SKU doesn’t get the Core 2010 ULV love. We don’t have any performance stats from Lenovo, but it does claim that the entire series continues to be all about portability and long battery life. Regardless, we’re still extremely excited about the entire group, though something about that 11.6-inch U160 and the ability to configure it with a Core i7 UM processor has us exceptionally giddy. We’re hoping to spend more time with these soon, but till then, be sure and check out the hands-on pics below.

New Core i7, Core i5 mobile processors to debut in HP Envy?

Intel’s churning out the mobile chips like nobody’s business — no sooner does it admit the existence of Core i5 and Core i3 ULV CPUs, the chipmaker finds itself with more explaining to do. That’s because dedicated Hewlett-Packard fans just found references to three new standard-voltage Core 2010 chips in the service manuals for the new HP Envy 17 and Envy 15 gaming laptops. The i7-840QM appears to be Intel’s new top-of-the-line quad-core CPU, sporting a 1.86GHz clock that turbos up to 3.20GHz (or 3.20MHz, if you believe the above screencap) and 8MB of L3 cache; the i7-740QM is two steps down with 1.73GHz / 2.93 GHz clocks and a 6MB L3 cache; and the i5-450M appears to be indistinguishable from the existing i5-520M with 2.4GHz / 2.93 GHz clocks and 3MB of L3 to help it along. Given the megahertz typo above and the fact that none of these new processors appear anywhere else in the documentation, we wouldn’t be surprised if these specs weren’t rock-solid… but if they are, the new Envy may well live up to its name. Intel to launch Core i3 ULV processor this quarter

We knew that Intel had a Core i5 ULV chip in the works for a June release, and now PC World is reporting on an Intel roadmap mentioning the aforementioned CPU, as well as a ULV Core i3. Due for release this quarter, the new 32nm processor should reach “laptops in the second half of the year,” according to Intel VP Stephen Smith. The company was mum on release date, performance, and pricing, but don’t fret — keep your eyes on this space, and we promise you’ll know as soon as we do.

HP TouchSmart tm2 getting Core i3 and i5 this summer?

This is just a rumor at this point, but it’s definitely one we’d file in the believable column. According to NewGadgets.de, HP’s planning to update its 12.1-inch tm2 convertible tablet with Core i3 and i5 processors in June. Considering we’ve heard that Intel will be releasing its Core i5 ULV processors around then, this certainly makes sense — after all, we’d expect HP to swap out the current Core 2 Duo ULV processors for something more powerful, yet power efficient. Time will tell if the new chips make it into the multitouch laptop, but it’s good to know that HP’s still working on at least some sort of Windows 7 tablet.

Intel plans to stuff more than 8 cores, extra speed into 2011 server chips

Yeah yeah, “more cores and faster speeds,” you’ve heard it all before right? That’d be our reaction too if we weren’t talking about the successor to the Nehalem-Ex, Intel’s most gruesomely overpowered chip to date. Launched under the Xeon 7500 branding in March, it represents Intel’s single biggest generational leap so far, and with its eight cores, sixteen threads, and 24MB of shared onboard cache, you could probably see why. Time waits for no CPU though, and Intel’s planned 32nm Westmere-Ex successor will move things forward with an unspecified increase in both core count (speculated to be jumping up to 12) and operating frequencies, while keeping within the same power envelope. Given the current 2.26GHz default speed and 2.66GHz Turbo Boost option of the 7500, that means we’re probably looking at a 2.4GHz to 2.5GHz 12-core, hyper-threaded processor, scheduled to land at some point next year. Time to make some apps that can use all that parallel processing power, nay?

Intel Introduces Ultra-Low-Power Processor for Smartphones

After a few false starts, Intel is making yet another attempt to get inside smartphones by launching a new Atom processor designed specifically for mobile devices.

The chip, codenamed “Moorestown,” will be extremely power efficient, yet pack enough computational muscle to enable features such as video conferencing and HD video, says Intel.

“This is our second-generation, low-power Atom platform that can exceed our competition in terms of power and performance,” says Anand Chandrasekher, Intel senior vice president and general manager of the Ultra Mobility Group.

The system-on chip package will be based on Intel’s 45-nanometer process and will pack 140 million transistors.

Intel’s chips run the show in netbooks, notebooks and desktop processors, but the company has been sidelined in the fast-growing smartphone market. Processors based on the rival ARM architecture are in most smartphones today. For instance, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor, which has an ARM-based CPU, is in the Google HTC Nexus One phone and HTC’s upcoming EVO 4G phone.

Intel tried its hand in the phone-chip business earlier, but in 2006, sold its XScale ARM-based division to Marvell. More recently, Intel tried to pitch its current generation of Atom processors to smartphone makers, but the chips were never accepted because they consumed too much power for phone use.

This time, Intel says its made major improvements to power efficiency so its Moorestown chips can stand up to, or even beat, the competition in energy efficiency.

“This is the third time Intel is entering the smartphone market,” says Flint Pulskamp, an analyst with IDC. “The difference is this time they realize being inside phones is essential to their long-term viability so they are being very aggressive with their design and architecture.”

The Moorestown system-on-a-chip has three parts. The first is an Atom processor that combines the CPU core with 3-D graphics, video encoding, memory and display functions. The second is a controller hub that supports system-level tasks. The final piece is a mixed-signal integrated circuit that handles power delivery and battery charging.

Together these chips use just 1.75 percent of the power that the current Atom chips do, in the idle state: Instead of the 1.2 watts drawn by current Atom CPUs, the new Moorestown chips will draw just 21 milliwatts.

Similarly, Intel is promising 5 percent of the power consumption of current Atom processors, or 115 milliwatts while browsing the web; and one-third the power consumption while playing video.

These power savings translate into more than 10 days of standby time, up to two days of audio playback and four to five hours of browsing and video battery life, says Intel.

“We can generally dynamically detect what the phone is doing and adjust the power consumption,” says Belliappa Kuttanna, the principal architect of Intel’s Atom architecture.

The new Moorestown chip supports clock speeds of up to 1.5 GHz for high-end smartphones (compared to the 1 GHz seen in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors) and up to 1.9 GHz for tablets and other handheld designs. The chips have been designed for the Android operating system and for Intel’s Moblin OS.

Intel says it is already producing these chips and consumers can expect mobile devices that use Intel chips later this year.

But so far, the company hasn’t announced any smartphone models that will use Moorestown. Earlier this year, the company demonstrated Atom processors in a phone produced by LG.

Breaking into the smartphone market will be tough for Intel, says IDC’s Pulskamp. Intel will have to compete with companies such as Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and Infineon, all of which use ARM-based architecture.

“Intel is trying to move step-by-step in the mobile market,” says Pulskamp. “They did well with netbooks and now they are looking at phones. But they are going to face more a challenge in smartphones than they did with netbooks.”

We’ve seen the future of Intel’s mobile platform, and it isn’t all roses and sunshine. Three years after the chipmaker told us Moorestown would reduce Atom’s energy consumption by a factor of 20, company execs told us earlier today that they’ve more than reached that goal with the new Z6xx series. Problem is, in the smartphone realm Intel’s competitors haven’t been sitting idle; according to one of Chipzilla’s cantaloupe-and-magenta bar charts, it seems the company has merely caught up in terms of battery life. That’s not to say the chips aren’t worlds better than previous Atoms — Intel sees 1.5GHz smartphone processors that slay Snapdragons and up to 1.9GHz in a tablet PC variety — but 5 hours of web browsing is most decidedly not the 24 hours of productivity Intel previously promised. Besides, who knows: Qualcomm also has a 1.5GHz SoC in the works, though it may not be available by the time Intel’s chips ship in the second half of the year.

None of this is to say that Intel won’t continue to dominate in the netbook marketplace — we shudder to think at the potential when combining a nice, chunky battery with Intel’s nearly leakproof new chips, and perhaps a small serving of switchable graphics while we’re at it. But without a single new MID or smartphone to show us this morning — Aava Mobile and OpenPeak‘s offerings seemed unchanged from our previous encounters — we’re not sure if the company’s other mobile ambitions have any sway. HP Pavilion line made over with metal casing, new AMD and Intel processors

See that up there? That’s the new HP dm4, and you better believe that this aluminum housed 14-inch laptop not only packs a Core i5 processor and plenty of sex appeal, but starts at $729. In a nutshell, that’s basically the whole story of the four new HP Pavilions — gone are the glossy lids and LED touch shortcuts, though remaining in tact are the affordable prices and mainstream power. The inch-thick dm4 happens to be our favorite of the bunch — it’s got a soft etched pattern along the lid, chiclet-style keyboard, on-board optical drive, and is available with different Core i5 CPU and ATI discrete graphics options. And if that 14-incher isn’t for you, there’s also the 14.5-inch dv5, which instead of the brushed aluminum lid, has a matte imprinted cover that’s available in black, red and champagne. Starting at $649, the dv5 is available with Core i3, i5 and AMD’s upcoming Turion II processors, and while it doesn’t have discrete graphics options, the Intel versions will support Intel’s WiDi technology.

Going on up in size, the 15.6-inch Pavilion dv6 is all about choices — you can configure it with either a brushed aluminum or HP Imprint finish, a mulitouch screen, and AMD or Intel Core 2010 processors. The AMD variant will start at $530 and the Intel Core i5 version at $649. Last but not least is the dv7 powerhouse, which now has a Beats Audio option. No surprises here, the 17-incher can be pimped with quad-core AMD or Intel CPUs and ATI discrete graphics. We’re planning to review at least a few of these models before back to school laptop shopping season gets fully underway, but for now, feel free to head on past the break for the full press release and feast your eyes on some of these far-from-budget-looking lappies down in the galleries below.

Intel demonstrates Light Peak on a laptop, says 10Gbps speeds are only the beginning

Folks in Brussels for Intel’s European research showcase got to get their hands on the company’s Light Peak this week, with the first demonstration of the optical cable technology running on a laptop. Outfitted with a 12mm square chip that converts the optical signal into data the machine can read, two separate HD video streams were piped to a nearby TV, which displayed them with the help of a converter box — a necessary evil until the Light Peak chips are developed for the display side of things. According to Justin Rattner, Intel’s CTO, the current 10Gb / second speeds are just the beginning. “We expect to increase that speed dramatically. You’ll see multiple displays being served by a single Light Peak connection. There’s almost no limit to the bandwidth — fibers can carry trillions of bits per second.”
