AT&T to allow grandfathered unlimited iPad data plans on iPad 2, your weekend rave to continue

Good news, iPad 3G owners. If you were lucky enough to snag one of those coveted unlimited data plans with your original AT&T iPad, you won’t have to toss it when upgrading next week. The carrier has confirmed to us that those who currently have the aforementioned plan will be able to keep it on their account when upgrading to the iPad 2, which in turns gives you no reason whatsoever to turn down the opportunity. Except for the lack of a USB port, SD card slot and a screen that touts the exact same resolution as the first model, of course.

[Thanks, David]

Apple confirms $100 refund for those who recently purchased an original iPad

Much like the company did when it suddenly dropped the price of its original iPhone, Apple is giving $100 back to those who purchased an iPad up to a fortnight before the March 2nd unveiling of the iPad 2. If our math is correct, that makes February 16th the cutoff date, and it’s being reported that those in the US will see $100 placed back on their credit card, while those overseas will get £100 / €100 back in their pocket. If you’ve suddenly found yourself in this pool, you’ll need to head back to a brick-and-mortar location with your receipt to get the refund processed, or if you ordered online, you’ll need to call Apple’s 1-800 number and use your smoothest late-night voice when asking nicely for your Benjamin back. Godspeed.

CBS & Turner Sports are streaming all the March Madness games to PCs, iPhones & iPads for free

Every year CBS has enhanced its March Madness On Demand experience, from HD VOD on cable boxes to HD streaming on PCs before adding PiP and paid mobile access last year. For 2011, a new deal has brought in Turner Sports to not only provide enough channels to air all the games in high definition (we figure you’ll find CBS, TNT and TBS on the channel guide with no problem, but with some of the games diverted to lesser known TruTV HD check the HDSportsGuide link below to see if it’s in your area yet) but also expand the streaming experience by promising higher quality video, personalized channel lineup and social tie ins. If you’re on the go, the mobile client for iOS devices (sorry, no Android or other mobile OSes) is free this year so you can keep that fiver in your pocket this time. There’s another pic of the iPad client, a video trailer and all sorts of details waiting after the break, so click through to find out more or just wait for the free apps to hit iTunes March 10th.

AT&T Mobile Hotspot for iPhone 4 limited to just three WiFi devices (update: it’s an iOS 4.3 thing)

Say it ain’t so! According to this here slide, which details a bit of insidery AT&T information about the impending release of iOS 4.3, Ma Bell’s iPhone 4 will have its Personal Hotspot restricted to use with just three devices. Just about every MiFi / mobile hotspot device we’ve ever seen — including Verizon’s iPhone 4 — has supported five WiFi devices, but unless AT&T pulls a 180 here, it’ll be limiting its iPhone to just three connections. What’s wild is that we’ve found AT&T to actually have superior 3G speeds when you can actually get a signal (and thus, be more conducive to tethering five devices at once), and since you’d be on a data cap anyway, it’s not like AT&T risks losing millions from five P2P servers being ran over one’s iPhone. Granted, it’s possible that some unicorn crafted this piece of paperwork to throw us all off, but we’ve reached out to AT&T and are awaiting comment. You know, just in case.

Update: Based on Apple’s iOS 4.3 page, only three WiFi devices are supported through the Personal Hotspot connection. If you’d like to tether five total devices, the other two will need to be over Bluetooth / USB. Don’t go blaming AT&T here — we’re guessing Verizon’s model will be set up the same way. Thanks, Christian!

EasySign iPhone app halts the print / sign / email cycle, trees everywhere celebrate

All together now: “flippin’ finally!” For anyone in the business world who has been blocked from receiving information due to the inability to locate a printer, ink pen, scanner, publicly available PC, a working printer driver and a fifth of Jack, say hello to your savior. EasySign is a delightfully simple new iOS app (yeah, we’re already begging for an Android port) that solves a painful problem, and it should make signing documents on the go a whole heck of a lot easier for those who tote iPhones. The concept is simple: you download the document you’re supposed to sign right onto your iPhone, and then you use your finger to enter your John Hancock. It’ll stamp whatever date you want onto the form, and with a simple button press, it’s converted to a PDF and shot back to the sender. We’d probably recommend using the stock black ink, but it seems that a few color options are available for those who prefer to roll a bit more casually. Head on past the break for a demo, and then hit that iTunes link for a free trial. Once you send three documents, you’ll need to pony up $4.99 for another 20 docs (a $9.99 unlimited version is coming soon). But hey, given that petrol looks like a steal compared to your average inkjet cartridge, you’ll probably still come out ahead.

Android Overtakes iPhone in U.S. According to Nielsen Survey

Thumbnail image for Android Meet Android.jpg

That’s according to new numbers from Nielson. The research firm now has Android at 29 percent of the total U.S. market, just beating out the iPhone and BlackBerry, who are neck and neck at 27 percent a piece. Microsoft’s Windows Mobile devices (Windows Phone 7 included) now make up 10 percent of the U.S. market. Palm and Symbian round out the top five, with four and two percent, respectively.

Those numbers come from a poll of 14,701 Americans. It’s not a particularly definitive survey, instead claiming to present where the “hearts and minds” of consumers are in the market, which sounds like a fancy way of saying “not definitive.”
HTC leads the Android market share, with 12 percent of devices, followed by Motorola at 10 and Samsung at five. Apple and RIM’s columns, of course, only list a single manufacturer (themselves). HTC also leads the Windows Mobile column, at seven percent, followed by Samsung at two, and HP and Motorola with one percent a piece.

Editorial: It’s Apple’s ‘post-PC’ world — we’re all just living in it

On Wednesday, Apple introduced the world to the iPad 2. A beautiful device, to be sure. Feature packed? You bet. Soon to be selling like hotcakes? Absolutely. But the introduction of an iteration on an already existing product wasn’t the most notable piece of the event, nor was the surprise appearance of Steve Jobs. No, Wednesday’s event was significant because it introduced the world to Apple’s real vision for the foreseeable future, a theme the company has hinted at but never fully expressed. This week, Apple showed everyone where it was headed, challenged competitors on that direction, and made it clear that the company not only has staked a claim in that space, but is defining it.

This week, Apple stepped into the “post-PC” era of computing — and there’s no looking back, at least not for the folks in Cupertino.

By joining the company’s ongoing vision of a “different” kind of computing with a soundbite friendly piece of marketing-speak, Apple has changed the rules of the game, and made the competition’s efforts not just an uphill battle, but — at least in the eyes of Steve Jobs and co. — essentially moot. But what exactly is the “post-PC” world? And why is it significant? Let me explain.

Apple iOS 4.3 GM available now to developers

That’s right, kids! The Golden Master version of iOS 4.3 has become available — it’s seeding as we speak. If you do any development on the iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, and you’re ready to get to partake in (or even dev for) all the new AirPlay and Personal Hotspot capabilities (for starters), you know where to go. As for the rest of us, we guess we’ll have to wait until the OS gets its official release on March 11. By the way, there’s no word of an OS update for Apple TV yet. Sorry, kids. That’s what they call “tough love.”

[Thanks, Gregg!]

AT&T to offer mobile hotspot on iPhone 4 starting March 11th, requires usual $45 data plan

Though it was kind of implied during the iPad 2 event yesterday when we learned that the GSM (that is, non-Verizon) version of the iPhone 4 would be getting iOS 4.3 with mobile hotspot capability on March 11th, we’ve doubly confirmed with AT&T today that the carrier will be offering the feature right out of the gate — a departure from the tethering delay of days gone by. Naturally, you’ll need the tethering feature added to your account, a $20 surcharge over the standard 2GB DataPro plan for a grand total of $45 with a 4GB bucket. Makes the extra coin a little easier to swallow over cabled and Bluetooth tethering alone, we suppose.
