Do you believe what you’re seeing? 9to5Mac along with iFixYouri repair say they’ve got the new iPad 2 display. Better yet, they’ve got the purported part number: LP097X02-SLN1, compared to the original iPad’s LP097X02-SLA3 display. It’s said to be lighter and more than 1-mm thinner than the original while featuring a thinner bezel as well — right, just as the rumors and our own sources have said. Such a display would also enable some tapering of the edges in line with those milled aluminum dummies we’ve seen. The big mystery is still the resolution. A 9to5Mac commenter claims to have deciphered the part number to reveal its LG Phillips 9.7-inch XGA 1024 x 768 H-IPS display origins (same resolution as the current iPad, if true). You’ll no doubt be aware of our (well justified) distrust for anything that passes a tech analyst’s lips, but this time’s a little different. Richard Doherty of Envisioneering Group cites “engineers who are working on hardware” for Apple’s latest project in asserting what that project actually is: NFC capabilities are apparently being built into the next generation of iPhone and iPad devices. Contactless payments via NFC have been steadily building up in hype and adoption recently — at least in the western hemisphere, the stuff is commonplace in Japan — and Doherty predicts Apple will make its move into the field with some new hardware and an accompanying “revamp” of iTunes. The idea would be to allow the use of iTunes gift card balances and the credit card info Apple already has from you to make swiping payments at compatible retail outlets. Apple is said to be planning enticements, like loyalty credits and points, to get you using its service in the place of the competition, and there are already a couple of software patent applications from the company detailing other potential uses for the technology. All of which could mean absolutely nothing, of course, but this seems like an awful lot of smoke for there not to be a fire under it.

Anyone else sick of all of this on-again, off-again with the supposed Retina Display for the iPad 2? It’s like a consumer electronics rom-com. Of all of the many rumors we’ve been seeing about Apple’s second generation tablet, none–save, perhaps, for the incredibly likely FaceTimey front and rear facing camera–has been more rampant than the Retina Display, the tablet’s adoption of the iPhone 4’s incredibly high resolution (about 326 pixels an inch) display.

Such a display would be have to be 2048 by 1346, reasons Daring Fireball–double the size of iPad’s current display. The site also reasons, it turns out, that the feature just isn’t coming in the next version of the tablet. “I asked around,” writes the site,” and according to my sources, it is too good to be true: the iPad 2 does not have a retina display.”

The iPad 2 may, in fact, have an increased display resolution (from, say 1024 by 768 to, say, 1536 by 1152), but it won’t be a Retina Display, according to those aforementioned sources. The site also claims that anything but complete doubling, while not impossible, is also unlikely “for reasons pertaining to UI scaling math (the same reason that the iPhone display resolution didn’t increase incrementally)–but it’s worth noting that my sources only claim ‘no retina display,’ not that the resolution is unchanged. The ‘double or nothing’ line is my opinion, not information from any source.”

Some careful digging in the iOS 4.3 beta has revealed an intriguing new string intended for the iPad’s Settings menu. As you can see above, users will be able to toggle a new auto-unlocking feature on their iPad, which would respond to closing and opening of the slate’s cover (or case, or sleeve, or whatever). Though the iPad already has an ambient light sensor, the one true way to make this functionality work is by employing a good old proximity sensor, so we can probably pencil that into our ever-expanding list of iPad 2 attributes. Who’d have thought there were so many ways to improve on a magical revolution, eh?

iPad 2 rumors are coming fast and furious these days, as the tech world braces itself for Apple’s follow up to its industry-shifting tablet. In recent weeks, we’ve heard that Apple will be dropping the Home button, offering a CDMA version, and will be shipping upwards of 600,000 of these in the next few months.

Now we’re catching wind of leaked images of a case from a Chinese company, which seem to shed some life on what it will offer. Some things haven’t changed. Judging from holes on the silicon case, it appears that the next version of the iPad will offer a dock connecter, headphone jack, and volume controls in the usual spots.

Some new spots have been carved out, however, for what appears to be a larger speaker, a rear-facing camera, a SD card slot, and a mini-display port, for video out–which are consistant with recent rumors about the rumored device.
