Levitatr: A Smooth Keyboard With Pop-Out Keys

Pure gimmickry, but undoubtedly beautiful. And despite its name, the Levitatr ships with all vowels intact

James Stumpf dreamed of an iPad with physical keys which would rise, magically, from the glass itself. Of course, this is a ridiculous dream, but that didn’t stop James from striving to make it real. The result is the Levitatr, a sleek slab of aluminum and polycarbonate from which — you guessed it — the keys magically rise.

The $80 keyboard (currently seeking funding on Kickstarter) is activated by pressing down a knobbly button on one side. This pops up the keys which were previously flush with the surface. Two more buttons — one for power and one to connect via Bluetooth — are hidden around back, and there’s a fold-out kickstand to hold the iPad at the appropriate angle.

The only problem I see is that it’s thick, at 9.8mm (0.4 inches). That only makes it a little bit smaller than Apple’s own aluminum keyboard inside a case.

Still, it’s neat-looking, and James has hopes for this to be incorporated into the screen of an actual tablet in the future. Although that sounds pretty difficult, if he can crack it, then he might genuinely be onto something that would differentiate a tablet from the iPad.

Wisconsin library loans iPads for at home e-reading

If you thought hitting up the local library was far too Web 1.0 for your avant-garde lifestyle, you may want to check out the Eau Claire public library in Wisconsin — it’s not only lending books, but also, iPads. Each one of the 44 available tablets will be stuffed to the digital gills with 1,000 books, ten audiobooks and various apps for your reading (or, not reading) pleasure. Although other houses of learning have launched similar programs, this is the first of note to go with Apple slates for its e-reading experiment. If you’re the proud owner of a library card and have less than $10 in fines, you too can get in line for one of the loaners. We wonder, does the old saying “you break it, you buy it” apply here?

DirecTV iPad app upgrade adds easy multiroom DVR control, HDUI compatibility

A new update for DirecTV’s official iPad app just showed up in iTunes, adding the ability to manage recordings on all of your connected HD DVRs. As seen in the screenshot above, v1.2.6 ties into the company’s whole home DVR setup by letting a user control one box directly, then browse recordings stored elsewhere and play them in the room in the room where they are. Also new is the ability to delete DVR’d shows straight from the iPad, and readers tell us that after the upgrade the app has begun working with the revamped HDUI beta that DirecTV started testing a couple of weeks ago. Hit the source link below to grab it for yourself from iTunes.

IRL: WildBlue satellite internet, international charging, a flashing habit and failing to get work done on an iPad

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we’re using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

It’s been a whirlwind two weeks of sitting inside concept cars, soaking up details about the PlayStation Vita and getting acquainted with Windows 8, and now that it’s all wound down, we’re getting back to the business of griping about gadgets we already own. This week, Darren dresses down the satellite service we used to hit posts in the wilderness, Tim takes a breather after a year of jet-setting, Joseph carries on his flashing streak and as for Joe, well, let’s just say his honeymoon with the iPad has come to a sudden, unproductive end.

Canon enables AirPrint on a trio of PIXMA wireless printers, plans to keep up the trend

Here’s the scenario: A., You’ve been getting your wireless print on with Canon’s PIXMA MG8220, MG6220 or MG5320 all-in-one inkjet printer, and B., you own an iDevice. Well, feel free to do a little dance (just not this one), because Canon’s added AirPrint support for the lucky three aforementioned. Simply (we hope) update your printer to the latest firmware, and boom, you’ll be printing over iOS 4.2 and beyond. Better yet, it’s also stated that the “majority” of forthcoming PIXMAs will follow in a similar AirPrint-enabled fashion. Need more info? Full PR is just past the break.

Adobe’s launching Flash Player 11, Air 3 bringing HD video and 3D gaming to all

While we’ve had access to Adobe’s Flash Player 11 in beta form for months, the company announced it will finally get official, along with Air 3, next month. Among the many new features included are support for accelerated 2D and 3D graphics with a claimed 1,000 times faster performance than Flash Player 10 and Air 2. That’s enough to enable “console-quality” gaming on both computers and connected TVs and on mobile devices (Android, iOS, Playbook) with a pre-release version of Flash 11 (a production release you can take on the go is expected in “the near future”). Other new options include allowing developers to package Air 3 along with their apps in a single install, HD video quality on multiple platforms including iOS, DRM for video rentals, 64-bit support and more. Check out Adobe’s pitch to developers with a press release and demo videos after the break, including a look at the hit iPad game Machinarium which was built with its tools.

Book Creator for iPad Makes E-Book Publishing Easy

Like a miniature version of InDesign, Book Creator might be the new pasting-a-fanzine-in-mom’s-basement

The iPad is just for content consumption, right? It looks like somebody forgot to send that memo to the folks at Red Jumper. Their app — Book Creator — lets you quickly and easily make e-books on your iPad and export them ready to read in iBooks, or to submit for sale in the iBooks Store.

Watch the video of the app in action and you’ll see its a kind of InDesign Lite. You can add photos from the iPad’s library and put text in boxes. These are all resizable with automatic guidelines and snap-in positioning, and you can layer things on top of each other, sending objects forward and back as you please.

Once done, the resulting book can be opened in iBooks or sent to Dropbox, and from there you can e-mail it to friends, kids (it’s a great way to make a children’s book) or submit it to the iBooks Store, safe in the knowledge that it meets all of Apple’s technical requirements.

It’s also a pretty nice way to author a PDF if you use it in conjunction with the growing range of iPad PDF converters. Your next e-zine is going to look a lot better than the last one.

Book Creator is available now, for $7.
