iOS 4.2 coming Friday with iTunes and Mac OS X updates, sans AirPrint? (update)

We knew it was coming, and now we’re hearing from MacStories (and their source at AT&T, who was probably wearing a trench coat and fedora) that iOS 4.2 for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad will roll out beginning this Friday, November 12, at 10AM PST. Of course, in order to take advantage AirPlay we’ll have to see an update to iTunes as well, which is good because iTunes 10.1 is rumored to be coming tomorrow today at some point. But that ain’t all! It seems that the website of note for Mac stories has been hearing from devs that references to AirPrint have been disappearing from online documentation in the iOS developer center, leading to speculation that Mac OS X 10.6.5 (also rumored to hit tomorrow today) will not have the ability to print wirelessly after all. We can’t speak to the veracity of all these claims, but we’re pretty sure we can look forward to a new OS for our Apple handhelds before the week is over.

Update: Of course, as Benedict Murray pointed out in the comments, if there really were a conspiracy afoot to disappear AirPrint, Apple certainly would have dropped it from the product page. So we’ll see.

Shure’s SE210m+ sound isolating earbuds include iPhone remote, $170 price tag

The mid-range earbud wars are raging harder than ever these days, with high-end stalwarts and newfangled boutiques all striving for your hard-earned cheddar in the $100 to $200 range. Take Shure, for example, who is better known industry-wide for upper-end headphones and in-ear monitor systems than consumer-level ‘buds. That said, none of those truths are keeping the company from pushing out a new set today in the SE210m+, which arrive with an obligatory three-button iDevice remote to control playback on your iPod, iPad or iPhone. For all intents and purposes, these are just a set of SE210s with an inline remote thrown in, but that’s probably enough to catch the eye of quite a few consumers who would otherwise flock to any competing model that was doused in white. You’ll find these guys at your local Apple store right now and online starting November 19th, but you’ll need to bring $169.99 (or a really bodacious ski mask) to take ’em home.

Bang & Olufsen BeoSound 8 welcomes iPads, iPhones and iPods into its emporium of awesome

iPod and iPhone users aren’t exactly bereft of choice for places to dock their audio transporters, but what if you prefer to keep your music collection on your iPad? Okay, actually there are a couple of options for you out there as well, but few will be quite as bodacious (or as expensive, we’re sure) as Bang & Olufsen’s latest. The BeoSound 8 straps a pair of cones to a connecting bar, adds some feet, a wall bracket, and a remote control, and sends you home to enjoy some “outstanding sound performance.” USB and auxiliary line-in connectors are available if you’re not dancing to Steve Jobs’ tune, while the body can be had in white or black and the speaker covers come in a variety of colors to express your individuality with. Look for the BeoSound 8 at your nearest B&O outlet later this month.

[Thanks, Jesper]

Joby’s Gorillamobile gets revised, caters specifically to iPhone 4 with added bumper case

Are you ready for a barrage of Apple-specific peripherals from the labs of Joby? Can’t say we are either, but they’re coming regardless. Today, the famed creator of the original Gorillapod has pumped out a seriously overhauled version of the Gorillamobile, with this one designed to work specifically (and only) with the iPhone 4. The real difference here is the inclusion of a bumper case (no, not that Bumper case), which slides in perfectly to an accompanying rail attachment on the bundled tripod. Slip in, slip out — you dig? It’s available today for $39.95 if you’re eager to ditch the case Apple gave ya, and you can expect more when this came from by the time CES 2011 opens its doors in two short months.

Report: iPhone 4 Is Most Fragile Smartphone

The glass iPhone 4 is more likely to slip out of your hand, eat the ground and break than other phones, according to a report.

A study by third-party warranty company SquareTrade tracked 50,000 different phones over one year to analyze their accident rates (that is, how often customers reported drops or spills), as well as their non-accident malfunction rates (i.e., how likely the phones are to fail on their own).

The iPhone 4 had the highest accident rate of 13.8 percent, but a reported non-accident malfunction rate of 2.1 percent, according to SquareTrade. That means the iPhone 4 is the most reliable phone over a year — so long as you don’t drop it.

However, the iPhone 4’s higher accident rate is nothing to sneeze at. SquareTrade notes that 90 percent of the iPhone 4’s failures were due to accidental damage. So that makes’ the iPhone 4 than other phones, it’s the most fragile handset.

Motorola and HTC phones were almost as accident-prone as the iPhone 4, both with an accident rate of 12.2 percent.

Bottom line: The more glass a device has, the more likely it is to drop and break. (Glass is more fragile than plastic? Shocking.)

“The bigger issue for consumers is the vulnerability of phones to accidental damage, especially as the market evolves more and more to include large glass displays,” SquareTrade said in its study [pdf].

For comparison, BlackBerry smartphones had a 6.7-percent accident rate but a 6.3-percent malfunction rate — suggesting they’re the least reliable because they’re more likely to fail on their own even if they’re not dropped.

Omnio WoWKeys: Dock your iPhone While You Type

Omnio WoWKeysOmnio isn’t the first company to come up with the idea of a keyboard that pulls double-duty as an iPhone dock. A number of companies have keyboards with a space to dock your iPhone so it can charge when it’s not in use, but the new Omnio WoWKeys looks sharper than the competition and comes in a smaller, more compact package.

The WoWKeys crams a laptop-style keyboard in to the left, and on the right is a dock where you slide in your iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS to charge or use it while it’s docked.

The keyboard has built-in hotkeys that allow you to turn your iPhone into a remote control or multi-touch trackpad for your computer, or use your iPhone (and an app installed on it – one that’s not included with the keyboard) to control media keys or serve as the number-pad that you lose in order to get the space for your phone.

Pricing and availability haven’t been officially announced, but the keyboard is expected to run about $100 USD at retail and ship from Korea.

FaceIt-3GS brings FaceTime to your jailbroken 3GS

Ah, the beautiful, ever-useful jailbreak and the developers that make it worthwhile. It’s already unlocked the magic of FaceTime over 3G, and now it’s making FaceTime capable with any old iPhone 3GS handset (thanks to the iPhoneIslam Team, who did the heavy lifting). Of course, lacking a front facing camera, the resulting video chat might be a little short on faces, but the functionality certainly isn’t hurting anybody. Right, Apple? Hit up the app on Cydia and start streaming to your heart’s content, and if you’re wary there’s a demo video after the break.

[Thanks, Moe]

Apple Announces iPod Touch and $399 8GB iPhone

This article was written on September 05, 2007 by CyberNet.

applelineup

It’s a big day for Apple at their “And the Beat Goes on” gathering today in San Francisco. The two biggest announcements are the launch of the iPod Touch which looks extremely similar to the iPhone, and a huge price drop for the 8GB iPhone. There were also a handful of other announcements which I’ll include at the end in brief. Without further ado, let’s talk about the iPod Touch!

–iPod Touch–

Offered in an 8GB and a 16GB model starting at $299, the iPod Touch is for all of your music, videos, and photos. Just like the iPhone, it has the multi-touch interface, a 3.5 inch widescreen display, Wi-Fi browsing, and now music downloads from iTunes!

Coming in at only 8mm thick, it’s slick and thin! The Wi-Fi feature with Safari is sure to be a big hit because now users will have access to YouTube videos and the iTunes Wi-Fi music store. The only downside, like the iPhone, is that it doesn’t have a hard-drive.

–$399 8GB iPhone–

Oh boy, am I feeling for all those “early-adopters” who just had to have the iPhone at launch! Not only is Apple discontinuing the 4GB iPhone, they’re dropping the price of the 8GB from $599 to $399! And to think, it’s only been 2 months since it launched…

For those of you who just bought an 8GB iPhone within the last 14 days, it’s rumored that Apple is willing to price-match. For those of you who stood in line on June 30th, so sorry… you’re out of luck!

Just an afterthought, I wonder what the refurb price will be? My guess is $299.

–Other News–

I said it was a big day, didn’t I? While the iPod Touch and the “overgrown” Nano were expected, a $200 price-drop for the iPhone definitely wasn’t! Oh, and did you hear? The Zune received a price-drop today too. Nice timing, huh? It’s now $199. No matter what Microsoft comes up with for the Zune, I don’t think they’ll be able to top what Apple just put out on the table.
