Keepin’ it real fake: GiPhone F98 is the KIRFiest next gen iPhone KIRF to ever KIRF

It’s been nearly a month since a China Grabber employee drunkenly left his experimental prototype next gen GiPhone at a Sushi Bar in Shenzhen, where it was found and sold to Shanzai.com for several thousand Yuan — and the gadget world hasn’t been the same since. The GiPhone F98 features, as all of these KIRFs do, dual SIM cards, an FM Radio, an “iPhone style” UI, WiFi, Bluetooth, and compatibility with 850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, and 1900MHz GSM. And it’s one of the thickest phones we’ve seen in a long time! (See for yourself after the break.) Available now for $150, if you dare.

[Thanks, Jessica]

Ellen Apologizes to Apple Over iPhone Spoof

Whoops. It seems that not even the mighty Ellen DeGeneres is immune to the influence of Apple’s PR reach. A day after running a fake iPhone ad mocking the handset’s usability, the talk show host issued an apology. “A lot of people found it funny,” DeGeneres says in the clip. “You know who didn’t find it funny? Apple.”

DeGeneres spends the remainder of the segment talking about how much she appreciates the company and all of its products–the iPod, iPhone, and iPad, even going so far as to extend her appreciation to IHOP. You know, just in case.

Seems like a harsh reaction to a pretty benign spoof. This looks like a job for Oprah.

NPD: 75 percent of US iPhone, iPod touch users download content, other 25 percent think Opera Mini is a tiny concert

While we can’t honestly imagine an iDevice user going about their life without connecting to the iTunes App Store at least once in a blue moon — if not on a semi-permanent basis — the statistically-significant NPD Group decided to look into the matter regardless. Sure enough, the org reports that a full three-quarters of iPhone and iPod touch users in the US do indeed download apps and entertainment content from the internet. In case you’re wondering, that figure beats the pants off those connecting from their video game consoles (19 percent) or Blu-ray players (17 percent), but both of those are obviously biased towards physical, disc-based media. Before you dismiss these findings as obvious, however, let’s read between the lines — if 75 percent of Apple’s touchscreen devices are pulling content from the web, that means the other one-quarter have gone without. If not apps, what the heck are those devices being used for?

New iPhone OS 4 Beta Gets Screen-Lock, Task-Manager

ipod-4-b-3

Apple continues to push iPhone OS 4 towards release with a new beta update. The update, available to iPhone developers only, adds a few new features which are worth a look.

First is a screen orientation lock. Unlike the iPad’s dedicated hardware button, the iPhone adds an extra on-screen button to the little dock that pops up when you double-tap the home button. This is the “multi-tasking” dock that also lets you switch between open applications. Right now, the new button lets you lock the screen in portrait mode only.

The iPod buttons have also moved to this control strip, and we presume that they replace the dialog panel which pops up when you double-tap the home button in the current iPhone OS. You also get a button to access the iPod app.

Finally, when the multi-tasking tray is open, you’ll see a button on each app that lets you quit it. This looks a lot like a task manager. I’d be constantly worrying that there were too many applications open, sucking my battery.

It looks a little ugly, but to be fair this is still beta, and Apple is likely still working through the best way to do things. These new buttons are accessed in the same way as the search screen on the current iPhone: Once you have accessed the dock, you swipe to the right to reveal this new panel. At least this part make sense, although the once-simple iPhone OS looks to be getting a lot more complicated.

Ellen pokes fun at Apple… and then apologizes

After watching this video, we’ve come to one conclusion: Apple needs to learn how to take a joke.

iPhone OS 4 beta 3 brings iPod widgets to the dock

Apple may have pulled iPhone OS 4 beta 3 soon after it went live, but we’re living recklessly — and hey, is that a set of iPod controls and a screen orientation lock hiding out in the app switcher? The control is accessed by swiping to the far left, and it all does pretty much what you’d expect. That’s good news, since we were missing the old pop-up iPod controls pretty badly. We’re hunting around for more new stuff, we’ll let you know if we find anything.

iPhone OS 4.0 beta 3 is ready for your scrutiny (update: it’s back!)

The last time Apple dropped a release of iPhone OS 4.0, it left more than a few downloaders in crumpled heaps on the floor, sobbing quietly to themselves as they tried desperately to come to terms with the fact that their beloved iPhones were far less usable than they had been just a few minutes prior. Well, we don’t know yet if beta 3 is any better, but it’s here — and if you’re a member of Apple’s iPhone dev program, it’s ready for you to install. So yeah — take care, good luck, godspeed, be prepared for the worst, and hope for the best. Let us know how it goes in comments, yeah?

Update: And… it’s been pulled. Good thing we just restored our phone. We’ll let you know if and when it comes back.

Update 2:
Turns out you can still access the firmware with a little creative URL hackery — but you’ve still got to be an iPhone dev program member, naturally. Thanks, Brian!

Update 3: Reports are coming in that it’s back and available without any trickery!

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

MoGo Combines iPhone Case and Headset

mogotalk_iphone.jpgWith the launch of the next iPhone only a month or two away and the shape of the 4G iPhone changed from the 3GS (according to Gizmodo), isn’t this a bad time to introduce a high-end iPhone case? MoGo doesn’t think so. It just announced the MoGo Talk XD for the iPhone 3G and 3GS, a case and a Bluetooth headset in one. Get it and you’ll always have a wireless headset close at hand.

The included headset includes a “SoundShape” design that contours to your ear, and delivers more than 15dB of passive noise cancellation. It’s good for 4 hours of talk time on a charge, or 72 hours of standby time. You can pick the set up for $129 at the MoGo Store.

Apple granted design patent for iPhone 3G, 3GS

Hot on the heels of the “ornamental design” patent covering its original iPhone and iPod touch, we’ve got a second USPTO patent granted to Apple covering what looks to be the more curvaceous iPhone 3G and 3GS. Jonathan P. Ive and Steve Jobs are among the inventors credited with the usual list of references including the LG KE850 Prada and Meizu M8 look-a-like devices. Don’t get too hung up on the missing “home” button — a US design patent covers any device “substantially similar” to the images above. What that means only a judge can say.

Chinese iPhone approved with WAPI WiFi

You might not be aware of this but the official Chinese iPhone offered by China Unicom since October 2009 doesn’t include WiFi — part of the reason for a continued Chinese grey market for iPhones sourced from neighboring countries. Now we’re seeing a China-approved 3G / GSM / Bluetooth device from Apple capable of using China’s homegrown WAPI (WLAN Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure) protocol. The new device — presumably a 4th generation iPhone — will join Dell’s Mini 3i as one of a few foreign handsets to feature the Chinese national standard for WLAN. See the 26 April approved regulatory filing after the break.

Update: The reference to “A1303” in the chinese language filing means this is likely a WAPI version of the iPhone 3GS, not a 4th gen device.
