Supposed next-gen iPod touch, nano / shuffle cases surface online

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before — an Apple event is looming, and suddenly some cases turn up online that seem to nicely line up with the devices rumored to be announced. These latest examples come courtesy of Chinese case retailer X-Doria, and include a case for what appears to be a 4th-gen iPod touch with a camera, and one that’s described as a case for a “nano 6G,” but could seemingly also be for a new iPod shuffle with a touchscreen. Of particular note, the apparent iPod touch case seems to reveal a curved back more similar to the current model than the iPhone 4, while the nano / shuffle case looks to be a near perfect match for that 1.7-inch Apple touchscreen that mysteriously turned up in Taiwan last month. What does it all mean? There’s less than a week until we know for sure.

Get Sights and Sounds with the SoundOrb Aurora

SoundOrbAurora.jpgGear4, the UK-based audio gadget maker, has just announced the SoundOrb Aurora docking station, which provides more than just great sound: It also delivers ambiance. That’s because the SoundOrb comes with a wireless subwoofer that includes a color-changing ambient light. Its LED technology can provide a constant shade or cycle through more than 16,000 different hues. The subwoofer can go anywhere within 100 feet of the base.

The dock itself uses Digital Signal Processing technology with two psychoacoustic sound algorithms, letting the listener enjoy music and movies in virtual wide stereo or virtual surround sound modes. The system will go on sale in the U.S. in October for a list price of $349.99.

IPADock, The Mother of All Desktop Docks

IPADock. Its name may sound more like a place to keep your iRacehorses, but the curiously-capitalized accessory is probably the most useful desktop gadget ever. Plug it into a computer and you can charge and sync a pair of iPads, four iPhones, and various combinations thereof. A universal dock-port can be fitted with the adapter from any iPod, from Nano to Touch, and then things start to get even handier.

Stacked up around the back are slots for SD-cards, MemorySticks, CompactFlash cards and a three-port USB-hub. In short, pretty much anything you might want to dock on your desktop will be served by this surprisingly good-looking and compact device.

The price? $70, although you’ll be ordering it from Japan if you want one.

Apple holding a media event September 7, says Bloomberg

Not sure how exactly this slipped our neural net, perhaps it was added in a later update, but yesterday’s Bloomberg revelation about a potential Apple TV show rental service now also includes the following tip: Steve Jobs et al plan on hosting an event in San Francisco on September 7. This just so happens to be on a Tuesday and meshes perfectly with Apple’s annual Mac plus iPod touch promotion (which ends on the same day). Of course, we could’ve told you Apple would be holding an early September iPod refresh event this time last year — the real question is what else might be revealed during the keynote?

Overheating iPod delays rush-hour train in Tokyo

Poor Apple. The company just can’t catch a break these days. On Wednesday, Apple Japan began offering customers iPod nano replacements, giving in to local government demands to better address an overheating battery issue affecting Apple’s first generation iPod nano players. Then Friday morning (making the English-language press only now) a busy rush-hour commuter train was stopped in Tokyo to investigate a smell. According to a spokesman, “When a member of staff went to investigate inside the train, a passenger came over showing him that the iPod she was listening to had burst apart.” No injuries were reported and the exact iPod model is still unknown. However, we can be certain that the eight minute delay on Japan’s notoriously timely railway system caused many commuters to question their ability to go on.

Ask Engadget: best FM transmitter out there?

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget question is coming to us from Wes, who is actually brave enough to even consider an FM transmitter. If you’re looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

“I’m in the market for a new car, and that has me thinking towards multimedia connectivity. I don’t want to rule out direct iPhone integration, but since the car is almost certainly going to be used, I’d like to think more along the lines of AUX-in and FM transmitter capability. I’ve also read that many of the new products can enable hands-free cellphone use, so this would be great to include. Any recommendations for a good in-car charging unit with these features?”

We’ll go ahead and be straight with you — if you’re in the city or the suburbs, be prepared for long, frustrating fights to find a clear channel. We’ve never had much luck with ’em outside of the middle of nowhere, but maybe our dear readership will chime in with a few pointers below. Godspeed.

Apple Peel 520 gets a white finish, odds placed on beating white iPhone 4 to market

If you’re gonna proverbially bear hug your iPod touch into a working cellular device, might as well get it in the trendiest color available, right? The Apple Peel 520 has now been shown off in white, a more stylish option for those wanting a case, extended battery, and freedom from the shackles of limited SIM options (at the expense of some functionality and ease of use, naturally). Still in production with no release date, but hey, if you’re the sort who likes to live on the outer fringes of consumer electronics, keep this import in mind. No promises it’ll work with whatever Apple has up its sleeve next, though.

iPod touch coming in a ‘few weeks’ with dual cameras and Retina Display, suggests John Gruber

The sun will rise, pigeons will annoy, and Daring Fireball’s John Gruber will get inside scoops on Apple product releases. So it goes. This time he’s touching on, erm, the iPod touch, making an offhand (though firmly declarative) comment on a post about the Dell Streak: “if you wait a few weeks to buy the Touch, you’ll get one with a Retina Display and dual cameras.” The man’s not one to fool around with such matters, so we tend to believe him here. It also helps that nothing he’s saying would be really surprising — a new iPod in September? With features trickled down from the most recent iPhone? Then again, that camera has proved elusive before.
