CES 2009: The Best iPod Knockoffs

I’m always a little bummed that CES and Macworld fall in the same week every year. It means, unfortunately, that since I’m hoofing around Vegas all week, I can’t make it out to San Francisco to see all the shiny Apple products and accessories.

Fortunately, however, CES has the next best thing (sort of): iPod knockoffs. There were plenty to choose from this year, especially in the International Hall.

After the jump check out a few highlights from the world of iPod knockoffery.

iHome showcases iP29 / iP49 / iHMP5 iPod speaker systems

iLuv already dropped a bundle of iPod alarm clock / speaker systems here at CES, so it follows logic for yet another “i” company to dole out a helping of its own. Kicking things off is the iP29 portable speaker case, and stepping up the excitement level from zilch to one is the iP49 rechargeable audio system with alarm clock / FM radio for iPod and iPhone. Lastly, the iHMP5 two-in-one stereo speaker / headphone system enables users to listen in private or enter into “full speaker mode” for the posse to tune in. As with most everything else announced here at CES, pricing and availability have yet to be revealed.

JVC’s latest boomboxes do touch control, iPod integration

Full-blown boomboxes definitely aren’t as popular as they once were, but there’s still something curiously attractive about buying a music system that can be slung upside one’s shoulder when the mood strikes you. To that end, JVC has introduced a new trio in its micro audio system, with the UX-GN6 boasting a “wake-up” sensor that turns the rig on when motion is spotted and a “laser touch” control feature, which is a sophisticated way of saying touch sensitive. Obviously, all three play nice with iPods, and they’ll all be available in around two months for $99.95, $149.95 and $199.95 for the UX-G200, UX-LP5 and the UX-GN6, respectively.

Sony bites the bullet, releases Made for iPod music systems

Sony, the debatable kind of proprietary formats, has finally caved. Well, at least in this one instance, anyway. In a presumed confession that Apple’s music players actually are somewhat popular, it is releasing the iPod / iPhone-friendly CMT- LX20i micro shelf system, CMT- LX20i clock radio and MHC-EC99i mini boombox (pictured above). Not a whole lot left to say other than they also play CDs, tell time and rattle windows, respectively. For pricing and release details — including a word or two on the new Muteki systems — hit up the read link.

2010 Scion xB RS 6.0

Scion_xB_RS_6.0_1.jpg

Scion fans with a taste for car tech will want to check out the xB Release Series 6.0, a limited production version that features an array of navigation, entertainment, media tools, and other options centered around a 5.8-inch touch screen Audio Visual Navigation (AVN) head unit—although so far (for mysterious reasons) the company has chosen only to release a couple of vague, black-and-white photos of it.

The AVN head unit features flash memory, voice recognition, MSN Direct, and Bluetooth connectivity. It also comes with an SD card reader, iPod connector, and a USB port. It’s satellite and HD Radio ready, and can play DVDs and iPod videos whenever the transmission is in park. The owner can also customize the display and choose from over 32,000 colors.

Fraunhofer IIS to push MPEG Surround as next big downloadable audio format

Watch out, MP3 — you’ve got a formidable opponent creeping up on you. All kidding aside (yes, we were kidding), Fraunhofer IIS is hoping that at least four people will turn from their MP3 / AAC addictions and embrace yet another one of its audio formats at CES, which is simply christened MPEG Surround. Harald Popp, head of the Multimedia Realtime Systems department at the company, has asserted that the firm believes that “MPEG Surround will become a major online distribution format when downloading music, movie and TV content,” noting that it offers “the music industry a way to sell iPod-compatible surround content through the existing stereo download infrastructure.” We suppose the multi-channel aspect is at least somewhat noteworthy, but we still see a hard road ahead for it to gain “global acceptance” in 2009.

Scosche Introduces Slew of iPod and iPhone Accessories

Scosche_kickBACK.jpg

Following the introduction of their passPORT iPod and iPhone car integration kit last month, Scosche has announced several new products this week ahead of CES 2009. The first three are stereo earphones: the IDR400M features noise canceling, a hands-free cell microphone, 10mm drivers, and single and dual flanged soft silicone inserts. The IDR600 has slightly larger 11mm drivers, a sliding magnetic cable management system, and a 24K gold-plated 3.5mm audio jack. The HZ5 tuneSTREAM Bluetooth Headphones give iPhone and iPod owners up to 30ft of wireless range (though probably less in real-life), the ability to answer hands-free phone calls, and up to eight hours of continuous battery life.

The company has also announced the passPORT Home Dock, which will charge the iPhone 3G, the 2G iPod touch, and the 4G iPod nano; it can snap into existing docking stations. In addition, there’s the reCOIL retractable car charger for the iPod and iPhone; it features a four foot cord and a magnetically locking dock connector. Finally, the company has announced new Protect and kickBACK (pictured) polycarbonate cases for new iPod and iPhone models, as well as the showTIME six-foot A/V output cable. Release dates vary, but most will be available either this month or by Spring 2009.

Speaker mod turns iPods into shells of their former selves

There’s certainly plenty of reasons not to turn a pair of iPods into some portable speakers — difficulty, inevitably poor sound quality, pains of regret — but we’re guessing that the sight of the creation above will prompt at least a few folks to start scavenging for parts. Apparently taking some lessons learned from previous Altoids tin speaker mods, Jordan Horwich crafted these for a total cost of $100, which includes the cost of some front and back iPod panels and some rather extravagant shipping rates. As you might expect, the entire project is a tad tricky, and involves a good bit of soldering, plus some Dremel work to make everything fit just right. Hit up the link below for the complete details and parts list.

iLuv rolls out iHD171 HD radio with iPhone / iPod dock, iTunes tagging

iLuv has been on quite the roll of late with these radio clocks and whatnot, though we’re a touch more excited than usual about the iHD171. For starters, this one tunes into HD Radio stations (you know, given how FM is so 2006), and it also plays nice with dock-connecting iPods and iPhones. You’ll find twin alarms for keeping couples happy, a front-panel display, iTunes tagging support, jAura speaker technology, an auxiliary line input (3.5-millimeter jack) and twin 4-watt drivers. If all that’s enough for you to exchange $199.99 for, you can do just that next month. Full release is after the jump.
