Hama cases foreshadow 5G iPod nano, 3G iPod touch at IFA: hands-on

We know you don’t really need any more evidence that Apple is gearing up to unveil at least two new iPod revisions at its forthcoming ‘rock and roll’ event, but are you seriously going to hit the ignore button on these? If you’ll recall, last year’s visit to Hama’s IFA booth gave us early access to cases of Apple’s then-upcoming round of iPod nanos, and this year the company seems to be disclosing all of Cupertino’s secrets once more. On hand were cases for Apple’s fifth-generation iPod nano and the third-generation iPod touch, both of which seem to make room for a built-in camera. Of course, these lovely peripherals could be nothing more than a complete waste of company resources, but we’d encourage you to browse the gallery below before jumping to that conclusion.

Novothink unveils first licensed solar chargers for iPhone, iPod

We’ve seen plenty of solar chargers in our day — and we’re somewhat fond of them as a concept. Novothink’s just unveiled the first chargers for iPods and iPhones that’s officially licensed by Apple. These attractive little guys have integrated solar panels on the back with LEDs to let you know the state of your charge. If the sun fails you, there’s also a USB cable for standard, non eco-friendly charging. These chargers only work with the 2nd generation iPod touch — which will be available this month, while versions for the iPhone 3G and 3GS will be outed in November. They’ll run you $70. Hit the read link for more photos.

Walkman outsells iPod in Japan for first time in four years… but iPhone sales don’t count

As with most accomplishments these days, we can’t help but place a rather large asterisk next to Sony’s award for managing to outsell the iPod lineup with its Walkman. According to Tokyo-based research firm BCN Inc., for the week ending August 30th, the Walkman series had a 43 percent share of the personal music player market versus 42.1 percent for iPods, marking the first time in four years that Sony’s managed to get the upper hand. Got that? Good, now for a major caveat. For whatever reason, iPhones aren’t considered part of the iPod line, meaning people who want the luxuries of the iPod touch and a wireless data plan aren’t included in the survey. That’s quite an omission — the iPhone 3GS is currently the best-selling phone in Japan, after all — and we gotta imagine it’d be more than enough to tilt the data in Apple’s favor, even if you threw in Sony Ericsson’s Walkman phones for good measure. But hey, it’s still a feat in its own right, and Sony might as well celebrate while it lasts — something tells us the gang in Cupertino has something up their sleeve soon.

Video: crooks clean out New Jersey Apple store in 31 impressive seconds

And you thought making off with 39 iPods in 15 seconds was something to behold. After studying said crooks in Utah, a trained team of larcenists headed over to Apple’s Sagemore location in Marlton, New Jersey in order to one-up the duo by snagging even more goods in under a minute. As the surveillance shows, a single blunt object decimated the iconic glass doorway and enabled five hyped-up thieves to enter, snag 23 MacBook Pros, 14 iPhones and 9 iPod touches, and head for the hills — all in just 31 seconds. Look, we aren’t trying to glamorize crime or anything, but this is the stuff GTA heists are made of. Head on past the break for a look at the video, and please, don’t try to replicate this at your nearest Apple store (without wearing a head-mounted camcorder and hooking us up with the footage, of course).

Video: Tech21’s iBand protective case and its mystical, magical, non-Newtonian goo

Video: Tech21's iBand protective case and its mystical magical non-Newtonian goo

If you’re the clumsy sort you have absolutely no shortage of protective cases and coatings to shroud your pricey gadget in, but most are ugly, bulky, and likely ineffective. The iBand from Tech21 isn’t particularly attractive nor svelte, but after watching the video below there’s little doubt about its effectiveness. It’s made of a substance called d3o, which is a fancy orange non-Newtonian substance, starting out stretchy and gushy but, when put under pressure, hardening and protecting its precious contents. We’ve seen this stuff applied to high-impact applications like motorcycle armor, but we’re glad to see gadgetry getting a little attention too. The video is a bit curious as it appears that the d3o is just applied around the edges of the case and yet the enclosed device survives a face-down landing, but it’s an impressive demonstration nevertheless. Right now the £15 ($25) iBand is only available for the iPhone and iPod Touch, but future gadgets should receive the oobleck treatment soon.

September 9 iPod event gets some corroboration from AppleInsider, still no word from Apple

There wasn’t much reason to doubt that September 9 date we’d been hearing for Apple’s annual fall iPod event, but now AppleInsider is saying it can independently confirm the date. Sure, it’s just a rumor backing up another rumor, but it’s more than Apple has to say on the topic so far. Meanwhile, AppleInsider also is backing up word that there won’t be a tablet at the event, that an iTunes “social networking” feature of some sort is in the cards, and that the iPods are getting cameras. Not a lot of controversy to be found here, but perhaps a modicum of assurance for folks desperately trying to pin down their iPod events schedule for the next couple of weeks.

Rhapsody brings subscription music to the iPhone, pending Apple’s approval

If the maniacs at RealNetworks have their way, you’ll soon be rockin’ out to Rhapsody on your iPhone or iPod touch, streaming all those pop tunes you crave over WiFi, Edge, or 3G, courtesy of your $15 Rhapsody ToGo account — pending approval from Apple, of course. Sure, we can’t imagine the company allowing Pandora but dissing Rhapsody, but stranger things have happened. If this isn’t enough to get subscription music fans spinning in their office chairs, the company is also working diligently on Rhapsody for other mobile platforms and carrier app stores, including Google Android. And there’s more! Check out the app in all its glory — on video, no less — after the break.

Apple reconsiders rejected iPhone apps, C64 emulator on the way?

We’re always a little hesitant to get too optimistic about changes to the App Store approval process, but it looks like there’s been a few hopeful changes to the way things are done in the past few days, which could well lead to some previously rejected apps becoming available. Perhaps the most encouraging sign is that Apple seems to actually be going back through rejected apps and contacting develops to resubmit their app (without any changes, mind you) for an “expedited review.” One such app is the Start Mobile Wallpaper Gallery, which was rejected for using Shepard Fairey’s famous “HOPE” image of Barack Obama on the grounds that it “ridicules public figures.” In other App Store news, the developer of the officially-licensed C64 emulator also says that it was contacted by a senior director at Apple, who reportedly said that there was “BIG news coming,” but didn’t elaborate any further. But, really, is there any news bigger than a C64 emulator?

Sirius XM readying SkyDock iPhone / iPod touch accessory and more?

Sirius XM itself may not be dropping many hints just yet (unless you count that iPhone app), but rumors are building that the company is set to make a big push into iPhone / iPod touch territory at an event next week, where it’s reportedly set to introduce a slew of new hardware. The standout piece is a so-called “XM SkyDock,” which XMFan.com describes as a dock for your iPhone or iPod touch that effectively turns it into a full-fledged satellite radio. Details on it are otherwise still fairly light, as you might expect, but the dock will apparently make use of a new type of power cord that uses your vehicle’s wiring as an FM transmitter wire, and will reportedly sell for less than $100. Other new devices supposedly on tap include a new color-screen XM Radio with that same new power cord that’ll sell for $80, and a new XM signal repeater that operates in the 900MHz spectrum and will apparently replace the current Delphi repeater.

[Thanks, Kevin]
