Nintendo GDC keynote roundup: Netflix and free AT&T WiFi coming to 3DS this summer!

We survived the keynote address here at GDC 2011, where Satoru Iwata and Reggie Fils-Aime just got done revealing a veritable cornucopia of info about the 3DS. On the video content front, the 3DS will get Netflix this summer along with the ability to pause a video on your handheld and continue watching on your Wii — though we presume you may recommence your cinematic experience on an XBox or PS3 too. The addition of Netflix wasn’t the only announcement by Iwata, however. Get the rest after the break.

Nokia: ‘Our first priority is beating Android’

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop is currently on stage at MWC in Barcelona, and he’s had a few choice things to say about the recent announcement that Nokia will partner with Microsoft to create devices which run Windows Phone software. Elop told the crowd assembled there that Nokia’s “first priority is beating Android,” and he also took a moment to let everyone know that Nokia is not interested in being the only company producing Windows Phones — countering some recent exclusivity chatter. The presentation is still going on, so we’ll keep you updated.

Be sure to check out our full liveblog right here.

Samsung’s crazy CES 2011 keynote — the highlight reel

It’s been nearly a week and we’re still trying to figure out exactly what was going on during Samsung’s wild CES 2011 keynote – even though we liveblogged it, talked about it on the showcast, and named it best presser of CES, we’re not sure you can fully understand the insanity of the dancers, the random moments, and a futureboy named Zoll unless you’ve seen it yourself. Samsung’s put the whole thing up on YouTube in six segments (you can find the first below) but we cut together a little highlight reel you can watch above. Trust us — it’s worth it.

Ford unveils Focus Electric with MyFord Mobile smartphone integration

Ford unveils Focus Electric and MyFord Mobile smartphone integration

Ford just made industry history by being the first major auto manufacturer to unveil a new model at CES, the Focus Electric. But we already knew it would. What we didn’t know were the details of the thing, but now we have them. And a lot of pretty pictures. Ford is saying the car will manage a range of 100 miles and that it will offer an MPGe rating (a conceptual equivalency of miles per gallon for an electric or otherwise non-traditionally powered car) higher than the Volt and comparable to the Leaf, but crucially it’s saying that it can be recharged on a 240 volt outlet in four hours or less. The Leaf can take up to seven hours with the same amount of current — though of course CHAdeMO support there handily trumps that. More details below, along with details of some pretty blue butterflies.

Live from CES 2011’s opening keynote with Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg

Ivan Seidenberg is passing the torch to current Verizon Wireless boss Lowell McAdam later this year after a long career with Verizon, so today’s keynote session starting at 8:30AM PT (11:30AM ET) should be a bit of a swan song for him. We don’t know what he’ll announce, if anything — Big Red’s official press conference is later today, where presenters are expected to offer more details on the carrier’s range of LTE handsets — but we’ll naturally be looking out for teasers and tidbits here this morning. Read on!

AirStash wireless flash drive with media streaming and WebDAV update hands-on (video)

Remember our good friends from AirStash at last year’s CES? Well, this year they’re back with the same wireless storage dongle, but now bolstered with a new firmware and smarter ways of transferring files to and from your mobile devices. As before, the AirStash is essentially an SD card reader that can be accessed as an ordinary USB storage device, or a basic read-only file server via WiFi tethering, meaning the host device doesn’t require a card reader or a USB host. Upon requests from many users, AirStash is now finalising an HTML5-based web app and a free native iOS app, both of which offer in-app image browsing and media streaming, including HD videos and Apple DRM content on iOS (associated with the appropriate Apple ID, of course).

What really surprised us was the claim that the AirStash’s minuscule 600mAh cell can do streaming for around five hours, regardless of the media type. That said, we were only given a demo with a standard-definition video clip, and even that took about 25 seconds to buffer over 802.11g WiFi, so you can imagine how many sunsets you might see while waiting for an HD clip to load. With about a full month away from release, AirStash thinks it can push the loading speed up in time for launch, so we shall see. Read on to see the other new features.

Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 keynote video now available to watch… again and again

In case a liveblog and a never-ending stream of Windows Phones weren’t enough for you yesterday, here’s a chance to relive Microsoft’s launch presentation of its grand OS redesign. It’s kicked off by the big dog himself, Steve Ballmer, followed by Ralph de la Vega and Joe Belfiore giving us the lowdown on carrier pricing and new features. It’s good, we promise. Though we can’t guarantee it’s quite as awesome as the UK presentation, which included a Stephen Fry soliloquy on the subject of smartphones, diversity, and Microsoft’s redemption. That one we’ve got stored in our hearts, which, regrettably, don’t yet come with a HDMI output. Video after the break.

Steve Ballmer and AT&T’s Ralph de la Vega to headline Windows Phone 7 launch event in NYC on October 11 — we’ll be there live!

Horror, shock, surprise! Microsoft CEO and prime fanboy of all things Windows and developer-related, Steve Ballmer, will be the keynote speaker at Microsoft’s New York launch event for Windows Phone 7. He’ll be joined on stage by AT&T’s Ralph de la Vega and when the pep rally is over, we’re promised opportunities to finally handle the official incarnations of retail Windows Phones for ourselves. We know all this because Microsoft has just dropped a kind little invite into our inbox urging us to attend its October 11 get-together. We will, of course, be there live, but don’t forget Microsoft’s also holding a London event on that day, ostensibly for the same reason, so make sure to be up nice and early next Monday if you don’t wanna miss a thing.

As we reported last night, the company is also holding a gathering centered around T-Mobile WP7 handsets, though details are more scarce on that event. We saw an official invite from the folks in Redmond, but it looks like that showing may be smaller in scale. We have to imagine that AT&T and their GSM competition don’t want to share the stage, but as this is a Microsoft launch, anything is possible. Regardless, if there are multiple carriers showing hardware come October 11th, we’ll have all the goods.

BlackBerry Devcon 2010 keynote now ready for your streaming pleasure

Can’t get enough PlayBook in your life? We understand how it is. After all, it’s not every day that you hear of ultraslim 7-inch tablets that promise to take your BBM life to another level. RIM must sympathize with your eagerness as well, since it’s now made its Devcon 2010 keynote available for streaming online — replete with Mike Lazaridis’ impassioned speech about a “no compromise” tablet that’s enterprise-ready, multimedia-friendly, and even comes with “a full gigahertz of RAM” (19 minutes into the video). It’s stirring stuff, and you might even learn a bit more about the QNX-built BlackBerry Tablet OS underpinning the whole thing. The source link is where you’ll find the full 142-minute show.

[Thanks, Moazam]
