Dell Mini 9 modded into an internet tablet

MyDellMini forum member Rob928, take a bow. This honorable gentleman has only gone and transformed an aging 9-inch netbook into a new-fashioned internet tablet. it might still be a chubby little thing, but there’s no denying the usefulness of using the entire screen to navigate instead of the usually cramped netbook touchpad. With a 16GB SSD upgrade alongside the venerable Atom N270 and 1GB of RAM, this device will even boot faster into Windows than your run-of-the-mill netbook. The read link will reveal all, including more shots of the hardware laid bare.

Nokia Booklet 3G Coming Soon for $299 with Contract

booklet3g.jpg

More details have finally surfaced on the intriguing Nokia Booklet 3G, Nokia’s first foray into the competitive netbook space. Nokia is partnering with AT&T to sell the gorgeous machine for $299 with a 2-year contract, starting Oct. 22. The Booklet 3G will be available exclusively at Best Buy stores through the holiday retail season.

Unfortunately, a 2-year contract with AT&T for its 3G data services costs $60 a month. That doesn’t really make $299 a very good deal, since the total cost ($299 + [$60 x 24 months]) with the data services is $1,739. The average consumer might do better to purchase the unit for $599 and buy a wireless card or cellular modem.

We really enjoyed getting our hands on the Booklet 3G at CTIA and think it warrants a much closer look. It has an aluminum chassis and a 10-inch screen with 1280-by-720 resolution, weighs 2.76 pounds, and runs Windows 7 Home Premium. The Booklet 3G also offers Wi-Fi, 3G connectivity, GPS, a 1.6-GHz Intel Atom processor, a 120GB hard drive, 1GB RAM, and supposed 12-hour battery life.

Look out for a full review of the slick machine later this month from laptop analyst Cisco Cheng at PCMag.com.

Toshiba finally weds SpursEngine and Blu-ray in 18.4-inch Qosmio G60 laptop

Toshiba’s beastly Dynabook was last updated in April, but at the time, Toshiba was still walking around with its chin up and refusing to integrate Blu-ray technology into its products. Now, however, the 18.4-inch Qosmio G60 (Dynabook MX in overseas markets) is finally bringing together a Cell-based SpursEngine HD video co-processor with a Blu-ray drive, ensuring oodles of movie watching bliss for those mettlesome enough to lug this thing around. Other specs include a 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo P8700 CPU, NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M GPU, 500GB hard drive, 4GB of RAM, twin TV tuners, Windows 7 Home Premium and a 1080p panel. If all goes well, it’ll ship next month (at least in Japan) for around ¥220,000 ($2,457), though your guess is as good as ours on a US release.

BFG’s 18.4-inch Deimos X-10 gaming laptop packs twin GPUs, $1,859 starting tag

BFG Technologies, which could admittedly move laptops based on company name alone, has decided to actually toss in some unnecessary legwork with its latest beast. The 18.4-inch Deimos X-10 (likely a rebranded Clevo M980NU) is undoubtedly one of the larger desktop replacements on the market today, boasting Intel Core 2 Duo, Quad and Extreme CPU options, twin 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M GPUs, a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution display, three HDD bays for up to 1.5TB of storage, up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM and a Blu-ray optical drive. There’s also a built-in subwoofer, four USB 2.0 sockets, HDMI / DVI ports, 7-in-1 card reader, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, a 2 megapixel webcam and a bundled backpack — because, you know, it’s physically impossible to lug this behemoth around any other way. It’ll ship with Windows 7 and start at just under two large, though you can save 10 percent if you get your order in prior to October 30th.

HP Mini 311 set for spec bump, Windows 7 Professional

With the overdue passing of Windows XP into the next world comes the cheery note that Microsoft’s ceiling on netbook specs will also be no more — and the Mini 311 is among the first to get upgraded in time for the new king of Windowstan. The already competent performer will be getting the full (non-LE) ION treatment, max memory of 3GB, an 80GB SSD option or up to 320GB of the old school storage stuff, and a choice of Windows 7 flavors up to the Professional level. This info comes from the machine’s maintenance guide, so we can’t be certain of when the upgrades will be ready for consumption, but HP’s track record would suggest the answer to that is soon.

Acer issues recall for some Aspire laptops

Acer’s issued a voluntary recall for some of its Aspire laptops — all of which were manufactured before September 15th of this year. It seems that some of them are experiencing an overheat of the microphone cable after “repeated” and “extreme” pressure is applied to the left palm rest. The affected models include the AS3410, AS3810T, AS3810TG, AS3810TZ and AS3810TZG. Acer’s set up a website where you can enter the serial number of your device to see if yours might be one of the affected.

Sony VAIO X announced, starts at $1,299

Sony’s just started a laptop-oriented event in NYC, but we just got our hands on what look like unpublished web pages for the new VAIO X and VAIO CW and an updated VAIO L machines. All of ’em now run Windows 7, of course, but the big news is apparent confirmation that the VAIO X will indeed have a 2GHz Atom — although it’s listed at a “2GHz Intel Processor,” the 533MHz bus speed also listed pretty much gives it away. And no, you’re not getting an Ion in this deal to make up for that starting $1,300 price tag — it’s Intel GMA500 graphics all the way. You’re also getting an integrated Verizon 3G card and both the standard and extended batteries, however. Still is that insane? It’s probably insane.

We’ll keep you updated as the event goes on, stay with us!

MSI GT640 houses Core i7, claims to be ‘world’s most powerful gaming notebook’

Man, Core i7 laptops just keep coming and coming (kinda like Arnold). The latest in what’s sure to be a torrent of companies upgrading their premier products to Intel’s finest quad-core battery killer is MSI, with the GT640. Though MSI hasn’t yet specified which of the trifecta of Clarksfield chips it has inside the machine, we do know there’s a 1GB NVIDIA Geforce GTS 250 taking care of graphics, as well as options for up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM, half a terabyte of storage and a Blu-ray burner. Other notables include a two megapixel webcam, HDMI, 7.1 channel audio output and an eSATA input. While we don’t yet know the wallet damage for that red-striped aluminum alloy body, its Windows 7 installation would indicate a release some time around, oh, October 22 perhaps? One more shot of the keyboard and screen after the break.

[Via Laptoping]

Update: The German announcement for this machine has been more forthcoming with the details. There’s a 1680 x 1050 resolution, 4,800mAh battery and a two-year warranty among the things we didn’t know about before, and the most important thing, the CPU model, is now revealed as a 1.6GHz Core i7 720QM. [Thanks, Johannes]

Screen Grabs: Dell’s Latitude Z keeps ‘Parks & Recreation’ intern busy

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.

Man, Dell‘s making a serious push to get its wares out to the masses this fall. Just days after we spotted an Adamo chillin’ in House M.D., a shiny new Latitude Z has now been spotted in NBC’s own Parks & Recreation. Granted, we can’t actually see that any work is being done (the default blue wallpaper isn’t exactly telling), but when you’ve got Amy Meredith Poehler running the grandiose city town of Pawnee, Indiana, you can only expect so much. But hey, look on the bright side — we’re pretty sure the proceeds from eBaying that Latitude Z would more than cover the flora she purchased while under the influence, wouldn’t you agree?

[Thanks, Andrew]
