HP shocks business computing world with Compaq 515, 610 laptops

Now, let’s be clear about one thing: these are laptops for business — so the casual need not apply. That said, HP’s just announced the Compaq 515 and 610, and, like most office parties, they’re pretty boring. The 515 is 14.1-incher with an AMD Athlon X2 or Turion X2 CPU, ATI Radeon HD 3200 integrated graphics, up to 3GB of DDR2 RAM, and an up to 250GB of hard drive. The 15.6-inch Compaq 610 boasts a choice of Intel Core 2 Duo or Celeron Dual-Core CPUs, Intel GMA X3100 integrated graphics, up to 3GB of DDR2 RAM, and an up to 250GB hard drive. Both of these suit-loving laptops boast DVD burners, LED backlight, WiFi and Ethernet LAN, three USB ports, ExpressCard and secure digital card slots, plus a VGA output. Starting price for the 515 is $429, while the 610 runs $449 for the base configuration.

Lenovo slips out IdeaPad U450p, won’t let you order one

Hey Lenovo, that’s a pretty sweet landing page you’ve got there for this newfangled IdeaPad U450p. In fact, we’re crushing pretty hard on that glossy 14-inch display, ultrathin frame and patterned lid. If you’re really looking for candor, we’d even go so far as to say that the “energy-efficient ULV processor” and “integrated optical drive” have us all sorts of hot and bothered, but the inability to actually see a full build sheet or order a unit for ourselves is simply disheartening. Care to fix that? Thank you so much.

Signed: The Internet

[Thanks, alsyl]

Walmart offers decently-spec’d Compaq laptop for $300

Not sold on the whole netbook craze? Then you might want to consider paying a visit to your local Walmart, which is set to offer a surprisingly well-spec’d Compaq Presario laptop for the low, low price of $298. As you might expect however, that model (the CQ60-419WM) isn’t entirely new, but it did just debut in January of this year with a significantly higher $470 price tag, and packed enough features to make it a not terrible deal even at that price. That includes a 15.6-inch 1366×768 display, an AMD Sempron SI-42 processor, NVIDIA GeForce 8200M graphics, 3GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, a DVD burner and, of course, Windows Vista for an OS. Good enough for ya? Then look for it to hit Walmarts on July 26th and be available “while supplies last.”

Shocker! PC repairmen aren’t to be trusted

Sure, it seems like a no-brainer, but when Sky News in the UK dropped a brand new laptop off at several repair shops in London (equipped with a key logger and sneaky video recording software) they caught employees accessing personal data, hacking accounts for banking and social networking sites, and charging for unnecessary work. Who would’ve thunk it, right? For their next report, the news team is going to investigate whether or not the iPozh is actually manufactured by Apple.

Update: Now with video!

Gateway gives Intel a go with Atom N270-equipped LT2000 netbook

After giving AMD the first crack, Gateway is issuing its second bona fide netbook with an Intel Inside(R) sticker instead. The LT2000 is a 10.1-inch machine with a list of specifications that any avid netbook follower could spout off in their sleep. For everyone else, here goes: a 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU, LED-backlit 1,024 x 600 resolution display, 1GB of DDR2 memory, 160GB 5400RPM hard drive, GMA950 graphics set, a card reader, built-in webcam, twin stereo speakers, a trio of USB 2.0 sockets, three-cell battery and a chassis that tips the scales at 2.62 pounds. Gateway’s making these available as we speak for $299.99, with the LT2001u receiving a NightSky Black coating and the LT2021u arriving with a Cherry Red outfit. The full release is after the break.

MSI takes the pain, fun out of overclocking with OC Genie

If you thought MSI‘s obsession with motherboard implants was over after it unveiled Winki to a nearly nonexistent amount of fanfare, think again. The company has just taken the wraps off its latest mobo addition, the OC Genie. In essence, this is the one-touch overclock button that laptop owners have long enjoyed, but for desktops. Right now, the OC Genie is custom built for the company’s own P55 motherboard, though it insists that all sorts of mainboards will be supported in due time. If you’re curious about the details, you’ll have to remain that way for now; all we’re told is that activating the module automatically pushes your system to a safe brink within a second, giving even the newbies in attendance the ability to squeeze more from their current rig. In related news, MSI also added yet another model to its growing Classic laptop series, the 17.3-inch CX700, which gets powered by a Core 2 Duo processor, ATI’s Mobility Radeon HD4330 GPU and 4GB of RAM.

AMD’s Neo to hit nettops, all-in-one PCs soon

AMD’s Neo ultra-portable platform was seen as something that just might rival Intel’s mighty Atom in the oversaturated netbook space when it debuted back in January, but up until now, the system has remained largely in the background. Indeed, it has only found its way into a select few machines, none of which have managed to gain any sort of traction beside the sea of Atom-based alternatives. Now, however, it seems as if the chips — which were originally engineered for ultraslim, thin-and-light laptops — may find themselves shoved into an array of nettops and all-in-one PCs. Here lately, a slew of underpowered SFF-type desktops and PC-in-a-monitor type units have found favor with bargain hunters, and Bob Grim, the outfit’s director of client marketing, isn’t looking to miss a golden opportunity. To quote:

“We’ve known all along that this type of technology would really work well in multiple platforms and multiple types of form factors. These CPUs perform better than the Atom processor, and the graphics are superior. These things… can play Blu-rays, they can play games.”

There’s still no word on who exactly plans on equipping their future machines with this here platform, but considering just how tired we are of Intel’s sluggish N270 and N280, we’ll take all the competition we can get.

How would you change ASUS’ Eee PC Seashell line?

In the past month and change, ASUS has found time to issue not one, but two new Seashell netbooks. Originally shown to the adoring public at CeBIT in Germany, this fresh take on the Eee PC was a welcome change to the drab netbooks we were accustomed to falling asleep on. We managed to have a look at both the ultraslim 1008HA as well as the more business-oriented 1005HA, but now we’re eager to hear your opinions on the matter. What would you do differently with the Eee PC Seashell line? Would you beef up the battery? Add a few ports? Swap in a different display or processor? We know Microsoft’s Windows XP limitations are holding PC makers back, but who says your imagination has to abide by those same guidelines? Detail your dreams in comments below.
