Canadian killed by unsecured laptop during car wreck

Here’s a tip folks: don’t get in car wrecks. If you someday find such a situation unavoidable, however, here’s another: keep that laptop of yours in the trunk, or at least in a case tucked down behind the driver’s seat. Mounties in British Columbia are reporting that a Canadian woman who perished in a car accident last month was actually killed by the laptop within her vehicle. As the story goes, the 25 year old’s vehicle was struck by a tow truck, flinging her laptop into the rear of her head. A coroner pegged the cause of death as a “blunt force trauma,” and investigators believe that the whole thing was survivable had the machine not been in the back seat. Not surprisingly, officials are using the incident to encourage others to secure their belongings whilst traveling.

HP Pavilion dv3 taken for a spin, comes back unfit but well-performing

Now that HP’s Pavilion dv2 has had time to shine, it’s dv3‘s turn to take the spotlight. The gang at NotebookReview have put their hands all over the 13.3-inch, Intel Core 2 Duo-equipped laptop, and despite good performance, negative points go to the build quality, which was said to be worse than other Pavilion models. Specifically, it suffered from a weak / squeaky chassis, a bowed keyboard, and a narrow window of clarity for the display — not gripes you want to have if you’re looking to pay a cool grand for machine this size. While not recommending you avoid the computer, they suggest looking into the dv2 and dv4 to fill your HP-owning needs. Hit up the read link for the full review.

Compal producing August-bound ultraportable for Dell?

With the Studio XPS 13 and newfangled Adamo already in its pocket, what other ultraportable does Round Rock really need? That’s a question that Compal seems eager and ready to answer, at least according to Chinese-language Commercial Times. The all-too-scant report mentions that the ultrathin laptop will be based on Intel’s excruciatingly slow (but power-sipping) CULV (consumer ultra low voltage) processor and should start shipping this August. Our best (and only, really) guess as to what Dell’s mystery machine could be? That already planned Mini 11, which we heard earlier this month would be ready between yesterday and Q3.

Always Innovating’s half-finished online store lists Touch Book tablet in stock, $99 keyboard sold separately

Remember Always Innovative’s Touch Book? Looks like the company’s gearing up to start selling the rather unique netbook / removable tablet hybrid, as noted by its under construction X-Cart powered online store. Four entries are currently listed — two for the Touch Book tablet and two for the keyboard, both available in grey and red and with 100 units in stock for each. Prices were $299 for the tablet and $99 for keyboard and, yeah, we get the feeling you’ll want to buy both for the full experience. No indication of an actual ship date. Try as we might, we couldn’t manage to check out with our order, but perhaps we’ll get some news shortly.

Update: We’ve been contacted by Always Innovating, who confirmed that the store was viewable by way of an error, and that the Touch Book can still be pre-ordered for summer shipping. The company also confirmed that the keyboard will be available separately for $99, the tablet for $299, with the whole deal going for $399.

[Thanks, Jeff]

Cheap Geek: Dell Notebook, Canon Videocam, Seagate Storage

DellLatitudeD532.jpg

Hey readers, Cheap Geek is late today because this cheap geek was getting numbers to his accountant. Yay! Pushing my taxes to the last minute makes me feel extra-cheap!

1. Buy.com has a great deal on a Dell Latitude D531 laptop. It runs off an AMD Mobile Sempron 3600+ 1.8-GHz processor and has 512MB of RAM and a 60GB hard drive. It also has a 14.1-inch screen and runs Windows XP Home. It doesn’t have a CD-RW or DVD drive, but whatever. The D531 costs only $299 with free shipping and looks like an excellent second machine or student machine.

2. A couple years ago, shooting home video meant shelling out some real money. Now, with this deal from Tiger Direct, you can grab a Canon ZR900 miniDV for only $129.99. Sweet price. It’s refurbished, but you get a one-month warranty so that’s enough time to check it out.

3. It’s a recurring theme in this column: Memory is getting so darn cheap! Costco is selling a Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive with 1.5TB of storage (!) for only $109.99. Wow, that’s cheap. That’s the best storage deal I’ve ever come across.

ASUS equips P30 and P80 laptops with Intel’s Anti-Theft Technology

Remember Intel’s Anti-Theft Technology that debuted around this time last year? You know, that wicked cool invention that you’ve heard absolutely nothing about ever since? Evidently it’s still alive and kickin’, as ASUS has just announced that two of its lappies will come loaded with it. The P30 and P80 will both arrive with the so-called theft deterrent system, enabling owners to send a “poison pill” (it’s words, not ours) remotely, rendering their computer inoperable by “comprehensively shutting it down.” If you manage to reacquire it in one piece, a passphrase can be inputted in order to reactivate things. Still, we have to wonder how this will really detract thieves from snapping up unattended machines — we mean, do they really stop to check out the anti-theft software before wheeling away with your rig? We’re guessing not.

Dell Adamo Unboxing

Our Dell Adamo unit arrived this morning, and we couldn’t wait to get our hands on it. As you can see, the packaging is pretty unique–and getting it out of the box and into our hands took less than 30 seconds. Nice job, Dell!

Toshiba’s Satellite Pro S300-EZ2521 is as bland as they come

Ready for one more excuse to snooze through hump day? Here you go. Toshiba‘s Satellite Pro S300-EZ2521, obviously the latest in its growing S300 line, is about as perfectly average as a 15.4-inch laptop can be. We’re talking a 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 3GB of DDR2 RAM, a 250GB (5400RPM) hard drive, SuperMulti DVD burner, WXGA resolution panel, GMA 4500MHD graphics, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and a built-in webcam. Furthermore, the actual enclosure just screams “Designed For Office Cubes,” and while we don’t have confirmation just yet, we’d wager that the 40 metric tons of bloatware would further substantiate that claim. There’s no mention of a price, but those in the market for a strictly-business machine should find it shipping any day now.
