Acer Aspire Ultrabook S3 officially announced, starts at 799 euros

And the march of the Ultrabooks continues. Following on the heels of Toshiba and Lenovo, Acer just announced the Aspire S3 at its IFA press conference — confirming that unequivocal leak we spotted earlier a few days ago. The machine, made of magnesium-alloy, measures an anorexic 13mm thin and weighs just 1.4 kilograms. We’re told it promises not just instant on access, but near-instant connectivity — Acer says it will wake from sleep in 1.5 seconds and register and connect to hotspots in about two. Other specs include a 13.3-inch (1366 x 768) display, ultra low voltage Core i3, i5 and i7 CPUs, a choice of solid-state storage or HDDs, Bluetooth 4.0 and a vent-free bottom so that you’re not left with first-degree burns. Depending on the configuration, the battery life is rated for up to seven hours or up to 50 days in sleep mode. So far we’re just hearing European pricing (€799 to €1,199), though Acer confirms it’ll arrive stateside by the end of September.

Dell teases XPS 14z, says it will be available ‘later this year’

If you liked the look of Dell’s inch-thin XPS 15z but are of the mind that a 15-incher isn’t quite portable enough, listen up: here at its IFA press conference, the company just teased a 14-inch version — the XPS 14z, natch — which will be available “later this year.” From the looks of it, it has the same industrial design as its big brother (and, some might say, a generations-old MacBook Pro), which, depending on your point of view, is either a good or a bad thing.

Samsung to sell limited edition, crystal-studded Series 9 laptops

Well, a very merry early Christmas to you too, Samsung. At the tail end of of the company’s PC-focused press conference here at IFA — an event primarily devoted to the Series 7 Chronos laptop and Windows 7 slate — its executives announced a rather unforeseen update to the Series 9. No, we’re not talking beefier SSDs or a skinnier silhouette. Get ready, friends, because this holiday season our favorite pinch-thin PC is getting decked out in crystals. Hand-applied crystals, guys. The company’s going to sell a limited number of these things in “Moonlight Blue,” a wintry navy, and “Luxury Rose Gold,” a champagne color, with carefully sprinkled bling on the cover. That color extends across the chassis, onto the palm rest and between the keys but blessedly, the fairy dust doesn’t make a cameo in the interior. No word on pricing, though we don’t expect Paris Hilton Samsung’s target customer will care.

Sony Vaio S line gets mild refresh with second-gen Core CPUs

That slinky 13.3-inch Sony Vaio S is getting itself something of a refresh. Not much is changing about the sub-four-pound notebook — you’re looking at the same 4GB of RAM and superb battery life, even on the base models. The folks at Sony are simply giving the line something of a brain transplant, swapping in Intel’s latest Core processors (that’s Sandy Bridge for those of you in the dark). You’ll still have your choice of i3s, i5s and i7s, but now they’ll run a little bit faster and a little bit longer. The slightly refreshed models will land on October 2 and no change in price has been announced. Check out the PR after the break.

Acer’s Aspire 5749 MeeGo notebook gets a Sandy Bridge core, hails from Deutschland

MeeGo running on an Acer notebook? Hardly surprising stuff. Pairing that OS with a Sandy Bridge CPU, however, is something to take note of. Contradicting Acer’s past claims that the company would only issue the operating system on Atom-based netbooks, the Aspire 5749 has popped up on Amazon.de serving up a 2.1GHz Core i3 processor and 15.6-inch 1366 x 768 display. Weighing in at 2.6kg (about 6lbs) and measuring 34mm in thickness, the Taiwanese-made laptop will set you back 400 Euros (about $577), and comes packed with 4GB DDR3 RAM, 500GB of storage, Intel’s GMA 3000 graphics set, DVD burner, three USB 2.0 ports, a 2-in-1 card reader and, of course, WiFi. Acer loses $234 million in worse-than-expected Q2

AcerIt may be the second largest computer manufacturer in the world, but things are not looking good for Acer. The Taiwanese company lost 6.79 billion New Taiwan Dollars (TWD), about $234.1 million, in Q2, far more than the already sizable anticipated shortfall of 3.3 billion TWD (around $114.7 million). That’s a dramatic drop off from the 1.19 billion TWD profit the company posted in Q1. Things are expected to improve in Q3, but Acer still expects to operating in the red until at least Q4. Some of the problems can be blamed on recent restructuring that has the vendor increasingly focused on mobile devices and less on netbooks, which were successful for the company but have quickly declined in popularity. LG unveils A530 3D gaming laptop, tours the world to showcase its wares

LG is taking its Cinema 3D Gaming Festival on the road and delivering demos of it three–dimensional prowess to 20 different countries. To celebrate, the Korean company is unleashing a brand new laptop for those with itchy virtual trigger fingers. The LG A530 sports a 15-inch 3D, HD display with up to a 1920 x 1080 resolution, your choice of Core i3, i5, or i7 processors, an NVIDIA GeForce GT 555 GPU, up to 8GB of RAM and either an HD webcam or dual cameras for capturing 3D video. There’s also one of those fancy hybrid hard drives with 4GB of solid state storage packed in to help bolster the performance of its 750GB worth of platters. The company was strangely mum on price, but the new notebook is expected to land in Europe, the Middle East and Africa this month — American consumers will just have to wait.
