BMW left turn assistant uses lasers to help you avoid running people over


BMW continues to fight the good fight: making sure you hit fewer people with its luxury vehicles. The German automaker is developing a vehicle warning system aimed at curbing collisions caused by drivers making left turns — a leading cause of accidents and motorcycle fatalities. The system, which can be enabled for vehicles making left or U-turns while traveling under 10mph, detects movements using the vehicle’s navigation system and a single camera. Once a left turn is recognized, three lasers are used to scan for hazards up to 328-feet away — if one is detected, the car will automatically brake and throw up corresponding alerts for the driver. The company is set to show off the system as part of INTERSAFE 2, this week in Wolfsburg, Germany. In the meantime, the rest of us will have to rely on things like mirrors and looking over our shoulders.

Robotic wheelchair uses 3D imaging to ‘see’ for visually impaired drivers

You may not be able to control it with your mind, but this robotic wheelchair from Sweden’s Luleå University of Technology can still offer something that only a few others can — “sight.” The chair uses a laser sensor to generate a 3D map of its surroundings, which is then transferred to an on-board haptic robot, allowing the bot to pick up on and navigate its way around any obstacles. A visually impaired student already took the contraption out for a spin and said he felt “safe” while traveling through crowded corridors, comparing the experience to “using a white cane.” Luleå’s engineers, however, still have some fine tuning to do. The laser, for instance, can only recognize objects at a specific height, while ignoring everything above or below its field of vision. Researchers are also busy developing a new 3D camera for the chair and are hoping to have it ready for commercial use within the next five years. There’s a full PR waiting for you after the break.

Lasers prove you can’t hold a camera still (video)

If you think schlepping a tripod along with your DSLR isn’t worth it because you’re convinced you can get a clean shot if you just concentrate hard enough, we have to ask… how’s that working out for ya? To demonstrate the destructive power of shaky hands, Camera Technica attached a laser to the hotshoe of a Canon 7D, with the light reflecting off a wall 20 feet away. The lesson: it’s challenging enough to get a crisp shot with a tripod — let alone without. In the video below, the laser point wobbles erratically when the photographer gingerly presses the shutter with his finger. In the second clip he uses a remote release, which visibly cuts, but doesn’t eliminate, the shake. Only when he locks up the mirror and resorts to a remote release does the shaking drop to a minimum. Laser steering system uses liquid crystal to destroy the enemy on the cheap (video)

It might look like a poor man’s game of Pong now, but a new laser steering system coming out of North Carolina State University could make blowing things up Star Wars-style cheaper and more efficient. The setup enlists a series of “polarization gratings” through which a laser beam passes. Each of these gratings, made of liquid crystal applied to a plate of glass, are configured to redirect the light in a particular direction, thus simply steering the laser beam without significantly decreasing its power — with each grating comes a new “steerable” angle. The system’s creators point out its not only hyper accurate, but also less expensive than existing arrangements due to the use of liquid crystal. Apparently the US Air Force is already using the stuff, but don’t expect them to go all Death Star anytime soon.

Prague to host world’s most powerful laser


To us, Prague will always be the Eastern European capital of roast duck, potato dumplings and tasty, cheap pilsner. But come 2015, the former Soviet Bloc city will also become home to the world’s most powerful laser, as part of the European Union’s Extreme Light Infrastructure project. According to plans released by the European Commission, the laser will produce peak power in the exawatt range (equivalent to one trillion megawatts). So, for a very small fraction of a second, the beam will generate one million times more power than the entire U.S. electric grid. Believe it or not, that’s plenty of time to conduct experiments that could reveal new cancer treatments and ways to deal with nuclear waste. Breakthroughs in either category would be incredible for the €700 million (about $1 billion) project, which also includes future plans to build two similar lasers, and a third that’s twice as powerful the Prague installation — roughly the same current draw as an HTC Thunderbolt.

Laser tripwire does Hollywood-style security on the cheap, precious jewels not included

Sure, you could opt for a laser tripwire that puts intruders on blast via Twitter, but there’s something to be said for the simplicity of the latest security system to come from Instructables user EngineeringShock. You’ve seen this setup before: a group of mirrors are strategically positioned to bounce a laser beam across an open space, ensuring that even the most nimble of invaders — excepting MacGyver, perhaps — will set sirens blaring. Consisting of a programmable keypad, a laser and detector, a series of six carefully aligned mirrors, and an LED-equipped siren, the system does Hollywood-style security on a budget — the siren being the most expensive element at $20. New laser sighting system enlists electronic sensors to make sure snipers hit their marks

Anyone who’s ever picked a flea off a dog’s back with an automatic weapon knows there’s a fine line between a crushed bug and a bloody mutt. Fortunately for flea-bitten K9s, a team of researchers are working on a laser-packing fiber-optic sensor system to guarantee that your rifle’s crosshairs are always dead on. Known simply as the Reticle Compensating Rifle Barrel Reference Sensor, the setup enlists the exterior grooves, or flutes, on a typical rifle as a receptacle for glass optical fibers. These fibers direct beams of light along the top and side of the weapon to precisely measure just how far off the gun’s sights are from the barrel’s actual position. A set of algorithms and sensor inputs are then employed to adjust for distance and other factors that affect a bullet’s trajectory, providing the shooter with crosshairs that adjust to environmental changes in real time. Unsurprisingly, the system is being targeted at military and law enforcement, which means it probably won’t make it into the hands of anyone who uses firearms as an alternative to Advantage. Apple patent application reveals more projector possiblities, including a projector-equipped laptop

We’ve already seen a few patent applications that suggest Apple is at least mulling over the idea of using projectors for one purpose or another, and another newly published one has now offered a bit more fodder for speculation. Described as a “display system having coherent and incoherent light sources,” the patent application suggests that the projector would be laser-based, and be both cheaper and more power efficient than conventional light projectors, while also overcoming the so-called “speckle” problem sometimes seen with laser projectors. What’s perhaps most interesting, however, is that the patent application also suggests the projector could be integrated into other devices — in fact, one of the claims specifically mentions a laptop with an integrated projector, as artfully illustrated above.

US Navy’s solid-state laser sets boat ablaze (video)

See that flaming wreckage in the picture above? A laser did that, mounted on board a second vessel similarly bobbing on top of the ocean last week. Yes, even though the United States Navy told us that legitimate seafaring death rays might take another decade to materialize, basic weaponized lasers are ready today, as the 15-kilowatt gun attached to the USS Paul Foster happily demonstrates. Of course, as you’ll see in the video after the break, a beam of such minimal power takes a moment to burn through even an unshielded engine and ignite the fuel therein — once we get some 100+ kilowatt lasers up in there, we shouldn’t have such problems.

Ubisoft’s Battle Tag lands at the FCC, we’re already out of breath

Remember when we just about passed out from exhaustion following a rather short demo of Ubisoft’s nouveau laser tag setup? Well, judging from its appearance over at the FCC, it looks like the RFID-packing Battle Tag is ready to play. Unlike some of our more fruitful dives into the commission’s archives, this one doesn’t uncover a whole lot about the product that we didn’t already know. Internal photos show an RFID reader, used to communicate with ammo packs for reloading, and a thorough examination of the game’s user manual revealed the accompanying software is compatible with Windows only. So, no, we won’t be exposing any big secrets here, but for laser tag aficionados, whoever they may be, today is a good day. A Battle Tag setup for two is now available via Ubisoft for $130.
