Hasta La Gadget!

Taking 3D pictures with Fujifilm’s 3D point and shoot is pretty easy — even if ultimately unsatisfying — but if you need a place to display them, LG has that covered. Tucked away in its booth was a demo of “the world’s first 3D camera compatible HDTV” dutifully taking SD-card stored snaps and putting them on the big screen. Not an entirely complex process, but we figure if a better reviewed 3D camera makes it to market, you might appreciate picking up the right HDTV for the job.

You know how much we love gadgets, right? With gadgets like the TV Ears TV, our love is easily recognizable. We had a chance to go ears and eyes on with the rig at CES. Wearing the dangling headset wasn’t like walking on a cloud, but the volume was easily adjustable using the chin strap. We didn’t get a chance to try out the Jitter-Bug-esque remote, but we’re guessing that using the dongle is a walk in the park. Although it might not be your cup of tea, if you get a senior discount at the movies this might just be for you.

Since we can’t drool over sets without release dates forever, our attention at VIZIO’s CES event turned to flat-panels we actually expect to hit shelves in 2010. Still, we couldn’t have expected a sneak peek of the company’s planned iPhone remote control app (video after the break,) and the shock of seeing a 22-inch VIA & WiFi packing 22-inch LCD nearly overshadowed the massive 72-inch 3D set picture above. Also represented were a new soundbar surround package with HDMI 1.4 / Audio Return Channel due in May, a video-prioritizing wireless router and powerline networking setups, and of just to round things out, some iPod dock / touchscreen clock radios.

Dell‘s laptop and desktop lineups may hog all of the attention, but the company’s range of LCDs have proven to be contenders over the years. Not one to shy away from the professionals in attendance, the company has today released its first-ever WQHD monitor: the 27-inch UltraSharp U2711. Boasting a native 2,560 x 1,440 resolution, this beast just may pack enough pixels to sway you back into the single-monitor camp. Dell’s also trumpeting the unit’s “billion-color depth and IPS technology,” and the 6-millisecond response time, 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 350 nits of brightness and a 12-bit internal processing help to round things out. For the pros who make ends meet by editing photos or video, you’ll probably enjoy knowing that this one boasts a 110 percent color gamut, factory-tuned Adobe RGB and sRGB modes (alongside a color calibration report), custom color adjustments and a smattering of mounting options.

You’ll also find just about every port known to man: HDMI 1.3, DisplayPort, DVI-D (x2), VGA, composite, component, USB (x4) and an 8-in-1 multicard reader. ‘Course, the actual aesthetics are nothing to write home about, but again, this one’s being targeted at end users who care less about the bezel and more about true-to-life pixel performance. We had a chance to toy around with the new beast, and frankly, we were mesmerized. Without an in-house color calibrator, we can’t speak for those who need oodles of numbers and bar charts to tell if a monitor is performing correctly, but we can say that the panel was remarkably sharp, crisp and accurate — more so than our (much adored) 24-inch 2408WFP, that’s for sure. Be prepared to catch this one next month with an MSRP of $1,049.

Samsung’s just gushed its 2010 TV lineup, and chief among the troops is the 9000 series LED with built-in proprietary 3D processor and, more importantly, full support for a full color touchscreen remote control, integrated with WiFi and IR. Paired with the ultra-slim 9000 series (right), you can watch broadcast directly from the handheld and swipe it to the TV to enjoy. The 8000 and 7000 series also enjoy 3D capabilities, as does the 750 LCD set. Left out of the 3D fun? The 6500 LED and 650 LCD models — sorry gang. All models are reportedly Energy Star 4.0 compliant and the premium ones also come with Internet@Home with apps including Netflix. All the press releases after the break.
