Hasta La Gadget!

Whoever said being on hold was a bad thing? Verizon customers who call in and get stuck in limbo right now are being treated to a minor device scoop: an ad for the mythical Droid 2 Global, which has leaked out here and there but hasn’t yet been officially announced. The ad doesn’t reveal much apart from the existence of the CDMA / GSM slider and the fact that it’ll work in 221 countries, but that’s all we needed to hear — listen for yourself after the break.

Update: Ha, as commenter Spider-Man points out below, that 221 number is mighty suspect, as there are only between 191-195 countries in the world today, depending on how you count them. Sounds like Verizon needs to take this one back to the studio. Thanks, Spidey!

We just received this shot of what is purportedly the inside of the new MacBook Air. Contrary to popular belief, the machine appears to be another 13.3-incher, with the primary modification being extra room for battery cells and apparently no room for a hard drive. Of course, this is only one SKU, so who knows what else Apple has in store. From what we can tell from the photo, Apple is taking its unibody styling and construction and running with it here, not that the MacBook Air was too far off from the MacBook Pro to begin with. The telltale sign is the black hinge, though it also appears Apple has done away with the drop-down side ports.

Based on our own professional squinting ability, there are USB plugs on the left and right sides, Mini DisplayPort and an SD card reader on the left, and a power plug on the right. Of course, since the screw holes are facing us, we’re probably looking at this from the bottom, so flip all of those around if you want to imagine using this thing (because, of course, the power plug will be on the Apple-standard left side). We also have it on good authority that the rest of the machine has been restyled in modern unibody style, including the large single mouse button, but that the screen is still like the current MacBook Air, instead of the edge-to-edge glass with black edges. Also, it’s apparently running the same Core 2 Duo SL9400 processor of the current generation MacBook Air — possibly further proof that this is a very early prototype (our source says the model dates back to at least April). We’re working on getting more images and information, but for now at least two things seem (relatively) clear: Apple hasn’t forgotten about the MacBook Air, and 13.3-inches isn’t going out of style just yet. Hopefully we’ll know for certain next week!

It seems like we’re getting closer and closer to the arrival of the Palm Pre 2 and webOS 2.0, and it looks like Verizon will be in the mix — we were just sent this image of Big Red’s internal VZLearn portal showing Pre 2 device training. We still don’t know when it’ll actually hit or what pricing will be like, and we don’t know if it’ll hit Sprint and AT&T as well like the OG Pre, but we’re guessing we’ll find out soon enough — keep a sharp eye, we’ll let you know.

You Americans may not have a clue what Lovefilm means to Britons, but in short, it’s Netflix for the other side of the pond. To that end, we imagine quite a few UKers are giddy over a video that has since been pulled from Sony’s YouTube channel. We’ve embedded it after the break in case it revives itself in some magical, mystical fashion, but Everything PlayStation managed to grab the copy from underneath while it was still alive. It’s bruited that Lovefilm streaming will be coming to UK-based PS3 owners sometime this autumn, with a wealth of search options available and free trials promised for those who’ve yet to buy into the outfit’s services. We’re hoping to hear more from Sony (or Lovefilm) in short order, but for now, we’d encourage you to cross every finger you have that a dedicated disc won’t be required for everything to work.

Microsoft’s been really keen to keep all the Windows Phone 7 fanfare to itself, but LG’s equally zealous official UK blog has just thwarted that effort by posting both details and a gallery of images of the company’s Optimus 7 (aka E900) handset online. To be fair to them, it’s nothing a ton of leaks haven’t already revealed: the Optimus 7 will be a 3.8-inch touchscreen device, sporting WVGA (800 x 480) resolution, 16GB of onboard storage, a 5 megapixel camera with a 720p video mode, Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi, a digital compass, and your usual proximity and ambient light sensors. Also present will be that DLNA streaming functionality we saw at IFA, officially titled Play-To, which will be exclusive to LG’s phones along with Voice-to-Text and Scansearch, the former being a message transcriber and the latter acting as an augmented reality real-time search service. Intriguing.
