Well, we’ve been waiting for a PlayBook packing something more than WiFi to rear its enterprise-friendly head, and there it is — sort of. Search Google for “Sprint PlayBook” and the number one (non-sponsored) result is a page “introducing the BlackBerry 4G Playbook tablet,” which means the companies are right about on schedule for that promised summer release. Clicking on the link just redirects you to the Sprint homepage for now and, sadly, price and exact ship date are still anyone’s guess. There’s enough detail in the search snippet to tell us that this is legit and and an announcement page is ready to go, though — so, WiMAX fans, we hope you like QNX.

What’s a chip maker to do after successfully hawking five million of its Fusion APUs? Why, expand the line, of course! A leaked slide deck from within the lairs of AMD is showing off quite a bit of the company’s upcoming roadmap, and while a good deal of it has already been made public in one way or another, there’s one term that’s causing all sorts of buzz — and for good reason. Desna is the name to know, a Z-Series APU that’s aimed squarely at the tablet form factor. To date, only a handful of chips have managed to slide into slates, and while we always reckoned that a version of Fusion could really give those ARM-based alternatives a run for their money, it wasn’t clear if AMD actually had one that would handle the power and heat requirements. Based on these sheets — dated this month, for what it’s worth — the Z-Series chip will offer Flash compatibility, DirectX 11 support and IE9 / HTML5 acceleration, and that’s just for starters. Head on down to the links below for the full skinny, but make sure you grab a cup of joe and unplug the line first. You’ll need a few, to say the least.

Microsoft’s Mac Office 2008 won’t be released until sometime in January, but those of you who are eager to get your hands on it don’t have to wait much longer. File sharing sites have already started to distribute a 465MB download of the Beta version to anyone that wants it, and accompanying the download is a working serial number.

What’s this mean for everyone that doesn’t want to download it illegally? In no time at all you’ll be able to find Office 2008 Reviews blanketing the web, and a well-written review has already been posted over at the InsanelyMac forum. A follow-up poster also added screenshots of the splash screens for each of the individual apps.

One of the things people have been the most excited about is the Entourage 2008 software, which is kind of like Outlook for Macs. Many were hoping that it would finally be the product that they all wanted, but the reviewer wasn’t too fond of it:

It does take a long time to open, it makes strange noises at random times(like when you turned off email notification and it is idle). With this Application, I think that Microsoft tried to pack too much into one Application. The UI itself is not very space efficient and it is slow to use.

In the end the reviewer gave Mac Office 2008 a 4 out of 5 after ignoring the issues that will probably get fixed by the time it ships in January. I can’t wait to read what everyone else thinks of it.

HP kicked off this morning’s Q2 earnings call citing a leaked company memo that recently popped up at Bloomberg. That memo, which had the outfit’s CEO, Leo Apotheker warning of “another tough quarter,” resulted in a five percent drop in HP shares in after-hours trading Monday, according to the Wall Street Journal, and prompted the release of the outfit’s Q2 earning a day ahead of schedule — an earnings call was originally slated for Wednesday. According to the report, the company managed to pull in $31.6 billion in revenue and $2.3 billion in earnings, compared to $30.8 billion in revenue and $2.2 billion in earnings the same time last year.

So what brought about the pot-stirring internal memo? Well, it seems HP’s struggled to keep up with the competition when it comes to consumer computer sales. Despite an increase in revenue in every other segment of the company’s business, HP’s Personal Systems Group (which covers enterprise and consumer sales) saw revenue decline five percent year-over-year, with the portion covering consumer computers down 23 percent. That might seem like a big dip, and it is, but Apotheker says the company is “excited by the tablet opportunities,” continuing on to say that the impending release of the company’s TouchPad “will be an exciting product release for HP.” For now, we’ll just have to sit back and see if the webOS slate has the stuff to pull HP out of the consumer computer lurch. If you’re looking for a sleek, angular slab of an all-in-one desktop computer, Lenovo may have the machine for you, as we’ve just intercepted plans for this unannounced ThinkCentre Edge 91z, and she’s most definitely a beaut. According to the leaked PDF, Lenovo will fully reveal the 21.5-inch, 1080p desktop in just two days and ship it in June, but for now we can tell you that it can be configured with low-power Intel Core i7 processors, discrete ATI graphics and a 80GB mSATA auxiliary SSD — the latter of which Lenovo says can boot in just 20 seconds. You’ll also find HDMI output and VGA input to connect (or use the 91z as) a second screen, a “spill proof” wireless keyboard, VESA mounting options and a built-in carrying handle. Expect prices to range between $700 and $1200 when it hits the market, if these slides are correct.
