Ice Cream Sandwich leak outs Music 4.0.1 for download, previews Google+ 2.0

A funny thing happened to the folks at Android Police, the same group responsible for leaking some of the first screenshots of Ice Cream Sandwich. They’ve since come across a few apps from Google’s upcoming release — purportedly straight from a Nexus Prime. The first is Google Music 4.0.1 — a marked upgrade from the current 3.0.1 found in the Market today — which sports refined tabs, a contextual dialog and new player controls. For reference, the latest version is shown on the right, which is most likely installed onto a Gingerbread device. Best yet, the APK is currently up for download (which you’re able to grab for yourself from the source). There’s also a sneak peek of the upcoming Google+ 2.0, which suggests Messenger (formerly Huddle) and Conversations will be renamed to… get this… Chords. Feel free to take a peek after the break, or check out the full gallery at the second source link below.

Vodafone Jumps the Gun With 64GB iPhone 4S and 8GB iPhone 4 Listings

The 64GB iPhone 4S, and 8GB iPhone 4 revealed by Vodafone’s inventory system

Oh, Vodafone, what did you do? It seems that some over-efficient employee over at Vodafone Germany has prematurely updated its product list to include the new iPhone 4S. Even better, it lists a 64GB model, in both black and white colorways, and the 8GB iPhone 4 which is expected to take the place of the current low-end iPhone 3GS.

The info can be found in a compatibility drop-down box. I took this particular screen-grab on the product page for Elgato’s Tivizen TV tuner for iOS devices, but it can be found anywhere that regular iPhone 4 accessories can be seen (this iCandy case, for example).

What with these listings, the iPhone 4S name hidden inside iTunes, and the complete lack of reports about iPhone 5-specific internals from leaky manufacturers, it seems that the iPhone 4S is a done deal.

Which just leaves those curious tapered iPhone designs that the Chinese are making millions of cases for already. My guess? The new iPod Touch, wedge-shaped in order to fit in a decent camera at one end without thickening up the whole body.

T-Mobile customers would be able to keep rate plans on AT&T after contract expires

The post-merger AT&T&T world is a mysterious one. Nobody knows what it looks like or what the rules will be, and it’s quite likely we won’t know all of the answers until the acquisition has been completed — if it makes it that far. However, at least another piece has been added to the puzzle for now; according to an internal employee FAQ sent in to TmoNews, any customer in love with their current rate plan will be allowed to grandfather it into AT&T’s system and keep it after their contract expires. Curiously enough, it doesn’t say anything about what will happen if you’d like to upgrade your phone, which could be a completely different story. At least this little chunk of news serves to soothe nervous souls concerned about being forced to a higher-priced plan, which may keep a lot of people from suddenly jumping ship.

Pantech Breakout shows its darling face in the wild

The Pantech Breakout, Verizon’s least-hyped LTE phone this side of the Droid Bionic, has seen a fair amount of time splayed out on paper without getting its fair share of closeups. This has finally changed, however, now that Droid-Life was able to get its hands on true-blue images of the device. It appears to be a unit that’s already arrived in a Verizon retail outlet, lending credence to the rumor that the 4-inch Android handset will be available for our purchase next week. Unfortunately, Verizon’s still acting as if the phone doesn’t exist, so we’ll just have to strum our fingers on the desk for (hopefully) just a few more days to see if it’ll get acknowledged.

Samsung Epic 4G Touch user manual leaks, offering 150 pages of glorious diagrams

It may not be available on Sprint until tomorrow, but the Samsung Epic 4G Touch’s trusty literary companion has already made its way to our eyes (and hearts). The upcoming device doesn’t hold quite as many secrets as it did merely a couple weeks ago, so perusing through over 150 pages of how-tos and FAQs may not be a tantalizing prospect unless you’re dead set on purchasing the phone this weekend and want to be prepared to show it off to your pals at tomorrow night’s soirée. Whatever your motivations, head to the source link to begin your adventure.

HTC Bliss to be called the Rhyme, launching September 20?

The HTC Bliss is a phone we’ve seen so much of that new press renders don’t necessarily show us anything we haven’t seen before — there have been enough hands-on photos, walkthrough videos and leaked Sense 3.5 screenshots that there’s really no questioning its future. The image you see above was leaked with a few new pieces of quality information: the Bliss will inevitably become the Rhyme once it hits stores — which plays right into HTC’s infatuation with Beats, though the tech probably won’t be incorporated here — and will likely be announced at the September 20th event (the date on the press image is often a solid indicator). HTCInside is also reporting that the Rhyme will be available in silver / white, pink / yellow and dark blue, so perhaps it isn’t completely for the ladies, no?

Sprint changing return policy tomorrow, nixing Premier program at year’s end

Sprint’s been making mondo policy changes over the last two weeks in the form of increased fees, so what’s a few more cuts? We’ve received tips over the last day or so that suggest the Now Network up to its shenanigans again, making immediate changes to its return policy and soon putting the kibosh on its Premier program. Effective tomorrow, Sprint’s trimming its return period from 30 days to 14 and the risk-free trial offer — which ultimately allows you to walk away from your service within a month without being charged a penny — is vanishing into thin air. Reaching out for confirmation from a carrier spokesperson, we were told: “Beginning Sept. 16, Sprint is updating its return policy for new lines of service, upgrades, accessories and devices. We will share more details of the new Sprint Satisfaction Guarantee at a later date.” This doesn’t fully answer our query, of course, but it at least confirms that the return policy will fall victim to a few adjustments on Friday.

We also began receiving tips today foretelling the upcoming demise of the Sprint Premier program — the company’s two-tiered VIP program that offers annual upgrades and other perks. Premier members will apparently be notified as early as tomorrow (or as late as October) that they have until year’s end to cash in on their remaining benefits. The only reasoning given: “to help us focus on the areas that customers value the most, such as unlimited data plans.” Interpret that how you will, but ginormous things are going down in Overland Park, and we haven’t even heard the wondrous news about the carrier’s “Strategy Update” yet. Unless, of course, it’s all tied together somehow…

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

BlackBerry Bold 9790 Bellagio photographed in the wild, poses for family portrait

If you haven’t yet snagged one of RIM’s two newly refreshed Bold devices, you might want to hold off for the runt of the litter. Originally leaked back in May, the Bellagio 9790 borrows the bumped-up specs of its recently unveiled cousins, while staying true to the slimmed-down form factor of its 9700 predecessor. The leaked shots over at BGR show the diminutive portrait QWERTY next to the 9900, clearly showcasing the former’s likely 2.4-inch touchscreen, optical trackpad and 5 megapixel rear-facing camera. We already know this phone’s destined to ship with BlackBerry 7 OS, but as for the rest of the feature list, expect it to pack 8GB of storage, NFC-capability and a 1.2GHz processor. Of course, rumors being what they are, this could all very well change before the handset’s purported end of year launch. Curious to see more? Then hit up the source link below for additional in-the-wild shots.

Mobile Miscellany: week of September 5, 2011

This week, as always, was packed with news on the mobile front, so it was easy to miss a few stories here and there. Here’s some of the other stuff that happened in the wide world of wireless for the week of September 5, 2011:

  • It appears that Sprint employees are being informed that vacation requests anytime between September 30th and October 15th won’t be approved, due to “the possibility of a major phone launch in October.” Vacation blackouts are typically used during certain times of the holiday season, so the timing on this particular memo is a bit striking — as usual, we invite you to come to your own conclusions here. [via SprintFeed]
  • Two BlackBerry devices breathed life on T-Mobile this week in the form of leaks. First, the Curve 9360 began showing up on marketing material focusing specifically on its prepaid campaign, which says the device will be offered for $230 without having to sign a new contract. It didn’t mention the on-contract price, but if all goes according to rumors, it’ll likely be out this time next week (September 14th, to be specific). [via TmoNews]
  • Speaking of the Curve 9360, the phone will probably be hopping across the pond to a Carphone Warehouse near you (if you live in the United Kingdom, that is). It’s ready for pre-order now on the retailer’s site with a prepaid option for $200. Not bad for a brand-new BlackBerry at full retail cost. [via TechnoBuffalo]
  • The second BlackBerry we saw leaked for T-Mobile this week was the Torch 9860, which may have been discovered in T-Mo’s inventory system, according to a leaked screenshot. This doesn’t help us know the date or pricing of the new Torch, but it does signify that it’s likely just around the corner. [via TmoNews]
  • It’s possible that the Droid Prime and Nexus Prime have passed through Bluetooth and WiFi certification. Since names were not provided in the documentation, we’re left to speculate using the devices’ model numbers — rumored to be the SCH-I515 and GT-I9250. We’re naturally skeptical, but we’ll keep a close eye on the FCC in hopes that we’ll see these mystery devices pop up soon with at least a few revealing details. [via Droid-Life]
  • We’ve been expecting the recently announced Samsung Galaxy W to arrive this month in the UK, but all of our sights have been set on Three as the only known carrier… until now. O2 placed a teaser page on its website this week, listing the Galaxy W as “coming soon: September.” [via MobileBurn and AndroidCentral]

Samsung Stratosphere aims to be Verizon’s first QWERTY-packing LTE device

Verizon’s LTE network may be praiseworthy for its blazing-fast mobile broadband and high-end devices, but there’s one area of the carrier’s 4G lineup that’s always needed improvement: variety. From renders revealed by PocketNow, it’s apparent that one of the next-gen handsets slated for release soon (perhaps even this week) is the QWERTY-laden Samsung Stratosphere, also known as the SCH-I405. If true, this would be the very first LTE device that comes with a hardware keyboard, finally giving us a new option aside from the 4.3-inch slates that have dominated Big Red’s offerings for so long. It’s rumored to have an “awesome” screen (Super AMOLED Plus?), Android 2.3.4 preinstalled, 2GB internal storage and 5MP rear / 1.3 front cams; not much of a spec sheet to go off of, of course, but at least we know it’s unique. With several other LTE handsets taking the stage between now and the holidays, there’s no reason to make them all look the same… right?
