Live from T-Mobile’s CES 2011 press event

On yesterday’s new that LG would be bringing the G-Slate Honeycomb tablet to T-Mobile, interest in this particular presser obviously went through the roof — and now we’re here! Let’s hope this is an action-packed hour of crazy new hardware, and maybe — just maybe — some discussion of HSPA+ as a 4G technology. Set your watches to it: this puppy kicks off at 11:00AM PT (2:00PM ET). Read on!

LG Optimus Black hands-on

We were on-hand for a hands-on as LG threw itself a bash celebrating a couple swish Android sets: the Optimus 2X and the Optimus Black. We’ve seen plenty of the 2X already, but the Black is an entirely different creature. First off, the taper on the back that sees the set go from 9mm in the middle to 6mm on each side is both nice to look at and helps keep the set cradled in your hand. The 4-inch WVGA NOVA display is both bright — 700 nits, if you worry about that type of thing — and extremely legible in the glaring spotlights installed at the stand. LG was touting the addition of its Wi-Fi Direct feature — what at first sight seems like gimmickry — that allows direct file transfer between sets without the need for an access point, and hey, it worked — and might even be useful. We look forward to the Optimus Black crashing into our lives sometime in the first half of this year.

iriver teams with LG Display on Story HD e-reader, bumps resolution to 1024 x 768

What a difference a year makes, right? At CES 2010, we were staring at iriver’s Story e-reader, wondering if the future would ever be the same. Today, we’re doing something similar, albeit with way more pixel density. Sure to please our own, in-house Pixel Density Enthusiast Paul Miller, iriver has just let loose the world’s highest resolution 6-inch e-reader. The Story HD — which was designed in cooperation with LG Display — still relies on e-paper, but it packs an XGA (1024 x 768) screen resolution. According to iriver, that represents a 63.8 percent pixel increase over the competition, offering increased legibility, faster response performance and finer fonts. You’ll also find a Freescale processor, built-in WiFi and a content access portal that’s being kept under wraps for now. It’s also equipped with Easy Wi-Fi Network support, a battery good for up to three weeks of use and compatibility with DRM-laced ePUB and PDF files. If you’re curious to know just how badly this thing will undercut those LCD-based alternatives, you’ll have to wait; we’re simply told that it’ll be “competitively priced” and available for purchase in Q2 2011.

T-Mobile and LG have decided not to sit still in the shadow of Motorola and Verizon’s high-powered 4G Honeycomb tablet partnership and have just announced their intention to introduce the T-Mobile G-Slate. Few details are known at present other than those headline-grabbing 4G (or pseudo-4G) capabilities and Android 3.0 operating system. This is probably the exact same tablet that LG is hosting an event for tomorrow. Jump past the break for some video conferencing, browser, and e-reading demos in awesome, fluid, streamable video. Hey, even if you don’t care for either T-Mobile or LG, this is a pretty nice exposition of the Honeycomb interface.

LG Intros Glasses-Free Mobile 3D Display

Move over, Nintendo’s baby-eye-frying 3DS. LG today announced that it’s also getting into the glasses-free mobile 3D device game. The company didn’t actually reveal a product, so much as so off a new 4.3-inch 3D display that will be used in future devices.

The WVGA touchscreen measures 480-by-900 pixels. LG calls its 4.3 inches “the optimum screen size for watching 3D on a mobile device.” Here’s the info behind the technology:

LG’s 3D display uses an applied parallax barrier technology, which delivers a series of light-blocking slits attached to the front of the LCD panel. The slits, or barriers, ensure that the left and right eyes see different images, creating an illusion of depth and a thoroughly convincing 3D effect.

Working closely with LG Display, LG has also drastically reduced crosstalk. The new display has straighter, more upright barriers that are very precisely aligned to the LCD panel. This technological advance not only means smoother, brighter, crosstalk-free images, but also a wider viewing angle than on previous parallax displays.

LG Intros “World’s Slimmest” Phone

lgoptimusblack.jpg

Is this the world’s slimmest phone? At an admittedly svelte 9.2 millimeters (the iPhone 4 is 9.3mm, for the record), LG says yes. It’s the new LG Optimus Black, announced today, during the company’s CES keynote. The device has a 4-inch NOVA screen, which means it should actually be okay to look at, even when standing in bright sunlight–the company calls it “the brightest, clearest, and most readable among mobile screens.”

The phone also has a front-facing 2MP video camera for making those video calls that everyone seems so darn keen on, these days. It also features Wi-iFi direct data transfer between handsets. The Optimus Black is going to run Android 2.2 Froyo and will be released at some point during the first half of this year. You’ll be able to upgrade it to Gingerbread, too, however, when the time comes.

LG’s CES 2011 HD lineup: SmartTV platform, network Blu-ray players and HDTVs

Thanks to a couple of carefully planned slips over in South Korea, hardly anything about LG’s CES 2011 is apt to take you fully by surprise. But if you just so happened to disconnect over the holidays, we’ll break it all down below to ensure you remain firmly in the loop.

  • For starters, the outfit seems pretty darn proud of its new SmartTV platform. Hinted at last month, this system enables HDTVs, Blu-ray players and other sources to access all sorts of streaming media, apps and even provides users with a way to surf the web. Four main sections are given — TV Live, Premium Content, TV Apps and a Launch Bar — and for TV models, owners will control things with a wave of the hand (read: Magic Remote). SmartTV picks up where NetCast left off, offering access to Vudu, Netflix, YouTube, CinemaNow, Hulu Plus, Amazon Video on Demand, NHL Gamecenter, NBA Game Live and MLB.tv. This here functionality is baked into quite a few of the outfit’s 2011 HDTVs, but should own an older model…
  • Then there’s the all-new SmartTV upgrader! The ST600 is a minuscule set-top box that aims to transform any TV into a SmartTV. So long as your set has an HDMI input, you’ll be able to access the content mentioned above. But, of course, it’s on you to source your own Magic Remote.
  • If it’s an all-new TV you’re after, the company is also revealing its 2011 LED and LCD HDTV line. Nary a one is different than those we heard about last week, but at least you can now rest easy knowing that the LW9500 and LW7700 Nano Full HD 3D models will indeed see a stateside release this month. The best news here is the use of polarizing glasses — none of that headache-inducing active shutter mess. There are 13 new LED LCD models in all, with nine of ’em shipping with the SmartTV platform embedded. Unfortunately, LG’s not dishing out pricing information on these bad boys just yet.
  • Not so keen on picking up an LCD? Plasma still lives, you know! LG’s rolling out its 1080p Infinia PZ950 and PZ750 lines here at CES, with both available in 50-inch and 60-inch class sizes. Both lines come equipped with the SmartTV platform, a gesture-based Magic Motion remote andl as a free Android / iPhone app if you’d rather use your phone as a remote. The 50- / 60-inch PZ550 is saddling with NetCast 1.0, but it — along with the PW350, PZ950 and PZ750 lines — can handle 3D imagery. Sadly, LG’s also straying from providing pricing details on these.
  • Wrapping things up, the company is debuting its 2011 line of networked Blu-ray players and home theater systems. The BD690 supports 3D BD playback and ships with an inbuilt 250GB HDD and the SmartTV platform. The majority of LG’s line also includes WiFi, DLNA streaming support and a MusicID feature by Gracenote that enables consumers to play a song from a movie of TV show by mashing a single button on the remote. The BD670, BD650, BD640, BD630 and BD650 are also seeing the light of day, with the latter being LG’s first portable BD deck.
  • Finally, LG snuck in an image (seen above) of a 3D mobile TV prototype. We’ve no details whatsoever to go on, but you can rest assured we’ll be scouring the show floor in search of just that.

For more information on all of the goods here, head on past the break for the full releases. Don’t expect to find any pricing information, though.

LG Optimus Black and LTE-equipped Revolution coming to CES

LG is busily preparing its CES presentation area right now, where the well known Optimus 2X is being joined by a pair of intriguing new devices, the Revolution you see above, an LTE-connected handset that seems destined to ride Verizon’s minty fresh 4G network, and an Optimus Black (pictured after the break). The latter handset promises the “power of light” housed within an “innovatively slim smartphone with the best display clarity.” Both the allusions to slimness — we’ve found specs listing it as a 9.2mm-thick device with a 4-inch screen — and display prowess match up to the LG “B” device we’ve seen leak out previously, which LG itself promised will be launching at CES. Other details include Wi-Fi Direct certification and the world’s first two megapixel front-facing camera. It’s gonna be a fun week, to be sure.
