Google Street View walks through parks, so you don’t have to

Need to take a walk through the park, but hate all of the fresh air, foliage and sunshine that comes with it? Good news: Google has added a number of parks to Street View, including New York City’s High Line, elevated train tracks that have been converted into a 1.5 mile plant-filled walkway. Also on the list are the statue-filled Kensington Gardens in London and Tokyo’s cherry blossom-lined Koganei Park. The parks and their blurry-faced visitors can be easily accessed in the source link below. There’s also a video of the High Line project after the break.

Nokia Trials Free Wi-Fi in London

If you live in London, and own a portable device with Wi-Fi, then today is your lucky day. Nokia has just launched a trial service offering free Wi-Fi in Central London. Better yet — if it works, then the Finnish company will turn it into a full (and still free) service.

The trial will be concentrated around Oxford Street in the West End, but also has hotspots in Victoria, Marylebone and Westminster. Users won’t need to sign up or sign in. It’ll be just like joining the Wi-Fi network that your neighbor foolishly left open.

The 20 Megabit pipes will be limited to 1Mbit per user, to stop the tubes from getting clogged, and if the trial is successful, Nokia plans to add 1,000 hotspots around London.

Of course, the awesomeness of this scheme is offset somewhat by the fact that you have to get near Oxford Circus to use it. Then again, it’s most likely to be useful to tourists who want to avoid expensive roaming charges. In this case, the situation could be ideal.

Nokia World 2011 wrap-up

Nokia had something to prove at its annual event, and an eight-month turnaround of its smartphone arm is certainly nothing to be sniffed at. While Nokia’s first Windows Phone devices were undoubtably the stars of the two-day expo, there was plenty more to investigate — Nokia’s legion of development labs certainly didn’t let us down. We’re live from Nokia World 2011!

You’ve probably already gathered from our liveblog teaser and early look at one of tomorrow’s announcements, but we’re just settling in at Nokia World. And it really does feel like we’re a world away from the conference’s host city on London — the venue Nokia selected to host its growing event is quite a distance from Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and that famous big clock tower downtown. HTC announces its next party, Beats Audio and ‘surprise headliner’ in attendance

HTC’s Facebook page is inviting fans to a gathering on October 6th at the rock ‘n roll Roundhouse in London, ostensibly to celebrate the Beats Audio technology we’ve been listening to with the Sensation XE. Call us over-excited, but the manufacturer’s last party bore plenty of exotic fruit so we reckon those Dre-approved headphones in the flyer might be connected to yet another new handset — unless the mystery guest happens to be the aging hip-hop star himself. In any case, we’ll be there and we won’t hit a single canapé or rap pose until we’ve brought you the news.

London Philharmonic Orchestra goes cover band with tribute to video game themes

If you’ve ever caught yourself humming the Angry Birds theme song, then perhaps you should check out tonight’s London Philharmonic Orchestra’s video game tribute concert. The group will play more than 20 songs made famous by games like Tetris, Zelda, Call of Duty and of course, Mario Bros., as part of London’s annual music festival. When asked to create the ultimate gaming remix, composer and arranger Andrew Skeet vowed to keep it old school, while giving folks the best bits of music. It’s not the first time someone’s paid tribute to these hits, and we’re hoping it’s not the last. Check out the full setlist and video after the break.

British football fans agree on very few things: how much everyone likes Jimmy Bullard, Arséne Wenger’s need to buy a proper centre-half and how painful it is to be dragged out shopping just before kickoff on Saturday. It’s those sympathetic and forward-thinking people at Sky who have the answer, at least to that last one. The company has teamed up with supermarket Sainsbury’s (which has a track record of innovation) to trial a new trolley with a solar-powered iPad dock and speakers. Now you can watch the game, or anything else, via the Sky Go app on your device and get the grocery shopping done at the same time. Worried about getting so engrossed in Juan Mata’s footwork that you’ll be a danger to others? Rest easy, the cart has proximity sensors attached to let you know when you’re about to sideswipe a pensioner. It’s being trialled in the Cromwell Road Sainsbury’s in West London — all you need to try it yourself is an iPad, Sky Go access and a desire to be on the cutting edge of sports and technology. If the thought of shouting ‘Taxi for Bent!‘ down the fruit aisle appeals, you can catch another pic and the press release after the break.

Growing Up Geek: Richard Lai

Welcome to Growing Up Geek, an ongoing feature where we take a look back at our youth and tell stories of growing up to be the nerds that we are. Today, we have our very own Senior Associate Editor, Richard Lai, who also happens to be the Editor-in-chief of Engadget Chinese.

I’ve come to the point in life where I stop paying attention to my age, though it’s still fun to make people guess it for their reaction — you’ll find out after the break, but here’s a hint: I’ve spent the same number of years in both Hong Kong and the UK, plus a couple of years in Australia. Such a combination has turned me into a Chinese guy who speaks both British English and two Chinese dialects while holding an Australian passport; but I tend to skip all this and say that I’m a spy with many gadgets.
