Verizon plays the obvious card: its 4G trials are faster than 3G

As the clock ticks down on Verizon’s opening salvo of commercial LTE availability, PR noise is growing into a dull roar — not to say we necessarily mind, considering how desperately we’re looking forward to more 4G footprint in the States. Today, the company is reporting that engineers have managed to coax up to 40-50Mbps down and 20-25Mbps up out of its test networks currently deployed in Boston and Seattle — not what we can expect in a real-world environment where you’re on a train surrounded by obstacles and other people trying to use the network, but a pretty nice, round set of numbers nonetheless. In actual usage, they’re reporting more down-to-Earth figures of 5-12Mbps down (count on 5) and 2-5Mbps up (count on 2), which still bests EV-DO Rev. A by a healthy margin. Of course, this is just the beginning — LTE will get better over time — so this sounds like a nice start.

Verizon Testing 4G LTE, Likes What it Sees

Verizon Wireless announced that if recent speed tests are any indication, its new 700 MHz 4G LTE network will be “significantly faster” than the carrier’s current 3G deployment.
Trials in both Seattle and Boston have revealed peak download speeds of 40 to 50 Mbps, and peak upload speeds of 20 to 25 Mbps. More indicative would be the sustained average data rates, which are coming in at 5 to 12 Mbps down and 2 to 5 Mbps up.
That puts it at about three to four times faster than EV-DO Rev A in the real-world, if the numbers hold.
In December, Verizon updated its LTE specs and released them to developers, including the carrier’s device approval process. The latest word is that Verizon is expected to launch USB modems in 25 to 30 markets later in 2010, with the first LTE-capable smartphones not arriving until 2011.

When we were told market research pointed to WiMAX and LTE standards for 4G connectivity coexisting, we didn’t expect they’d do it quite so closely. Beceem, the maker of the WiMAX chips inside “every device in Clearwire’s network,” is working on a 4G modem that can handle both WiMAX and LTE, with the added extra of being able to move seamlessly between the two networks in order to find the best signal possible. The mashup of the two standards makes sense in light of all the equivocation from Clearwire and Sprint on the subject of which one they’d prefer, and would be a more than welcome simplification of our collective 4G future. Anyhow, the latest development is that Beceem and Motorola are working to pair the BCS500 to the latter’s WiMAX 4G infrastructure, with the first dual-mode chips set to start sampling “later this year” and hit mass production in early 2011.

Battery-powered Wi-Reach Classic turns any USB 3G / 4G modem into portable WiFi hotspot

Mobile broadband routers certainly aren’t new, but Connect One’s take on the whole thing just might be our favorite (yeah, even more than Cradlepoint‘s offerings). Of course, we’d pick up a MiFi of some sort if we were buying into the space today, but for those still under contract with a USB WWAN stick, the Wi-Reach classic adds a whole new level of utility. Put simply, this minuscule device boasts its own battery and a sole USB socket, which is used to connect with whatever 3G (and after a future firmware update, WiMAX / LTE) USB card that you slap in there. Samsung shows off LTE-packing netbooks at MWC

Samsung‘s just busted out some more news from MWC, and one of the hottest items on offer are its LTE netbooks — the first ever. Sammy’s showing off the previously launched 10.1-inch N150, NB30, and N220 — all with the same specs otherwise, but now packing the company’s own, in-house designed Kalmia LTE modem chipset. There’s no word yet as to when we can expect to see one of these bad boys on the market (though we certainly expect them to show up this year) — so far, Samsung’s only saying it’ll deploy them “according to service schedule and market demand.” You don’t say? Major infrastucture supplier calls it: LTE over WiMAX

If you’re Clearwire or Sprint right now, the last thing you want to hear is one of the world’s major suppliers of wireless infrastructure badmouthing the very technology that underpins your next-gen network — so we imagine there’s some groaning in the hallways and boardrooms of the world’s WiMAX carriers today. Why? Alcatel-Lucent’s COO of its wireless business, Patrick Plas, has pulled no punches in a statement this week that the firm is “not putting a lot of effort into [WiMAX] any longer” after noticing that there’s “a clear direction taken by the industry towards LTE.” Of course, it doesn’t take an analyst to notice that Europe, Asia, and virtually every carrier in the Americas have all taken on a decidedly pro-LTE slant in the past couple years, and these guys are just following the money — which in turn makes it harder (and more expensive) for the handful of WiMAX proponents with deployed networks to build out and stay technologically current. In the race to actual 4G commercialization, LTE’s still got a ton of catching-up to do — but once it does, it’s looking poised to blow past WiMAX pretty quickly here. In the meantime, we’ll be loving our Overdrives.

Japan certifies its first LTE device, LG says ‘whoa, ours?’

In a country whose carriers’ phone lineups are dominated by domestic giants like NEC, Sony, Sharp, and Fujitsu, you wouldn’t necessarily think that the road to 4G would begin elsewhere — strangely, though, South Korea’s LG has garnered the honor of becoming the first company to have an LTE device certified by Japan’s TELEC, a necessary, FCC-like step to getting cellular equipment deployed in those parts. NTT DoCoMo, which intends to launch commercial LTE service later this year, is undoubtedly stoked to hear that the LD100 external modem is the lucky recipient of TELEC’s seal of approval (following FCC certification last year, coincidentally), meaning the carrier now has the green light to use it in trials. Considering that TeliaSonera’s already beaten DoCoMo to the punch with a live, customer-facing LTE network, are the days of being shocked and awed by Japan’s mobile tech drawing to a close, or are we just witnessing a little fluke here?

NTT DoCoMo will demo LTE prototype at MWC, launch service this year

Still on track to launch its LTE network this year, Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo has today announced that its first prototype handset designed specifically to handle all that bandwidth will be unveiled at MWC 2010. We already knew a cool $10.4 billion or thereabouts were to be spent on Japanese LTE deployment, and now we can break that figure down a little by noting that NTT will be spending between $3.3b and $4.4b on its infrastructure alone. All we know of the new phone so far is that it’ll be the product of the overall partnership with NEC, Fujitsu and Panasonic, but judging from NTT DoCoMo’s last prototype to grace these pages, we’re unlikely to be left wanting.

Verizon lost $653 million last quarter in spite of increasing revenues

91.2 million total customers, 2.2 million of whom joined in Q4, $27.1 billion operating revenue in the quarter, and you still make a loss? Well, in fact Verizon made a tidy profit, which may be considered comparable to Google and Intel’s latest results, but its culling of jobs at the end of last year cost it a whopping $3 billion (presumably in redundancy settlements). Still, the company looks buoyant with that quarterly revenue number growing by 9.9 percent year-on-year, and CEO Ivan Seidenberg noting that significant costs were incurred in setting up for a 4G network deployment in 2010. Our favorite nugget of info? The “cash expense per customer” per month number: $27.62, which presumably includes Droid subsidies and the like. How does that compare to what you’re giving VZW each month?

Not so fast: testing finds world’s first LTE network isn’t very 4G-ish

In a rather disappointing example of “your mileage may vary,” market research firm Northstream has put TeliaSonera’s shiny new LTE network — the world’s first to go commercial — to the test, coming away with some disappointing conclusions. The bottom line is that they never managed to go above about 12Mbps downstream, a pretty wild figure considering that Ericsson is in the process of rolling out 84 purely theoretical megabits per second right now using plain old HSPA+ for 3 Scandinavia. The bright side is that they managed a fat 5Mbps on the upstream and experienced consistently lower latency than on the area’s 3G networks; in fact, the firm ended up coming away with a glowing impression of the service, assuming (probably accurately) that this is just the first baby step in finding out what LTE is really capable of. And hey, some lucky jerks are getting over 42Mbps down, so it’s a crap shoot anyway.
